COUCH 0R DAVENPORT BED.
Application filed June 19, 1912, Serial No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HYMAN FREEDMAN and NATHAN M. FREEDMAN, citizens of the United States, and residents of QlllCitgO, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Couch or Davenport Bed, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to folding couches or davenport beds, in which. the seat of the couch may be reversed, so as to render available for a bed, springs which are provided in the reverse side of the seat structure, and has particular reference to the provision of a simple, economical and efficient means for mounting the seat structure in the couch so that it may be easily reversed, and so that the seat may be entirely removed from and again reassembled with the couch, w thout the use of tools, when that may be desirable or necessary.
lVe attain the above objects by means of the structures illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- D Figure 1 is a front elevat on of a folding couch or davenport bed; Fig. 2 is an end elevation showing the spring provided in the reverse side of the seat extended to form a bed; Fig. 3 is a fragmental plan of one end of the structure in the positlon shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4: is a transverse section in which the seat is represented in dotted lines in an intermediate position and our new means for mounting the seat are represented in full lines; Fig. 5 shows the posltlon our mounting means assumes when the seat 1s in normal position for using the furniture as a couch or davenport; Fig. 6 is a perspective of the bracket for rece1v1ng the pintle with the stops for holding the seat in normal or reversed position; F1g. 7 1s a perspective of the bracket carrylng the pintle and arm for assembling 1t wlth the pintle receiving bracket and causing the pintle to shift to provide room for the back of the seat to clear the back of the couch during the reversing of the seat; and Fig. 8 is a fragmental detail showing means for locking the seat in normal closed position.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The reference character 1 designates the back of a couch or davenport having the ends or arms 2. These parts are provided with the usual upholstering 3.
The seat, 4:, comprises a rectangular Specification of Letters Patent.

framework, which is proportioned to fit be tween the ends or arms 2, and adjacent to the back 1. One broad side and the portion of a narrow side adjacent thereto are upholstered at 5 and 6 to form respectively the top and front of the seat for the couch or davenport.
Suitable bed springs, 7, (clearly shown in Fig. 3) are mounted in the broad side of the seat structure 4, opposite to the top 5. These springs, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, may be arranged in two or more leaves, 8 and 9, which may be folded, and will, when so folded, lie within the seat structure, and
a wide bed. springs are which when unfolded will form In Fig. 2 the leaves of the bed shown in unfolded position, and there is shown a pivoted leg, 10, with a sliding catch and brace, 11, to hold the leg in open operative position, but which will permit of the folding of the leg so that it will be accommodated in the seat structure.
Our present invention relates particularly to the means for mounting the seat structure with relation to the back and arms so that the seat may be rotated to bringeither the seat or springs uppermost and these means are as follows :A headed pintle or pivot pin, 12, is provided in a suitable plate, 13, having screw holes, 14, therein through which by means of screws it may be secured in position. To form a bearing for the pintle 12, there is provided the pintle receiving bracket, comprising a raised central portion, 15, and the rearwardly positioned end portions, 16, which are provided with screw holes, 17, for securing the bracket in position. The raised central portion 15 of the receiving bracket is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 18 sufficiently wide to receive the pintle back of its head. The slot 18 is continued at one end to the bend from the central raised portion to the rearwardly positioned end portion where it is enlarged at 19 sufficiently to admit the head of the pintle. Some play in the pintle bearing is necessary, as the reotangular seat structure in closed or normal position fits close against the back, and in order to turn it over the pintle must be capable of moving forward so that the corners may clear.
It is clear from what has already been said that when the pintle and pintle receiving bracket have been secured to the ends or arms and the seat structure, the seat structure may be assembled with or removed from the back and arms by bringing the seat so that the pintle head enters or may be withdrawn from the enlarged portion 19 of the slot 18.
By reference to Fig. 6 will be seen a strap, 20, secured by rivets, 21, across the rearwardly positioned end portion, 16, of the pintle receiving bracket. The ends, 22, of this strap, 20, are turned at right angles to provide stops, the upper one of which in conjunction with aprojecting rail, 23,upon the end of the seat structure will locate the seat when in closed or normal position, as shown in Fig. 5. When the seat structure is rotated to bring the bed springs uppermost, the lower turned end, 22, will engage the same rail, 23, to locate and hold the seat structure in proper position for a bed.
It will be seen by reference to Fig. 5, that while the upper stop 22, will locate the seat in closed position the back of the seat might still be tilted up if some one sat upon the front edge. To hold it down, we provide the bracket, 2 which extends backwardly from the upper edge of the seat structure. In this bracket is pivoted the vertical latch, 25, the upper end of which will engage the lower edge of the back when the seat is in normal. position because of the tension of a spring, 26, extending from the lower end of said latch to the seat structure. A loop 27 is secured to the upper end of the latch, 25, by means of which the latch may be disengaged from the lower edge'of the back and the seat structure turned over.
In describing the pintle and pintle receiving bracket construction it was eX- plained that some forward movement of the pintle in the pintle receiving bracket was necessary in order to permit the corners of the seat structure to clear the back when reversing the seat. I11 order to accomplish this movement mechanically and return the seat structure closely adjacent to the back in closed and fully open position, and at the same time secure the pintle in the slot 18, of the pintle receiving bracket, we have provided the arm, 28, which is pivoted by means of the pin, 29, to the pintle plate 13. In the free end of the arm, 28, is a laterally opening slot, 30, which accommodates a pin, 31, upon the rear rearwardly positioned end portion, 16, of the pintle receiving bracket. The pintle receiving bracket is disposed horizontally and the pintle plate, 13, vertically, as shown in Fig. 5.
It will now be seen, especially by reference to Figs. I and 5, that when the rear edge of seat structure is pulled upwardly, the arm 28 will cause the pintle, 12, to move forward in the slot, 18, and that in either fully closed or open position the said arm will return the seat structure closely adjacent the back.
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a couch or davenport bed comprising a back and ends, and a seat movable with relation to said back and ends, means for assembling said seat with said back and ends comprising a bracket having a horizontally disposed slot therein, a pintle plate, a pintle carried thereby adapted to engage said slot, an arm extending from said bracket to a point in said pintle plate eccentrically and in vertical alinement with said pintle.
2. In a couch or davenport bed comprising a back and ends, and a seat movable with relation to said back and ends, means for assembling said seat with said back and ends comprising a bracket having a horizontally disposed slot therein, with an enlarged portion for the introduction of the head of the pintle, a pintle plate, a headed pintle carried thereby adapted to engage said slot, and an arm extending from said bracket to a point in said pintle plate eccentrically and in vertical alinement with said pintle.
3. In a couch or davenport bed comprising a back and ends, and a seat movable with relation to said back and ends, means for assembling said seat with said back and ends comprising a bracket having a horizontally disposed. slot therein, with an enlarged angularly disposed portion at one end for the introduction of the head of the pintle, a pintle plate, a headed pintle carried thereby adapted to engage said slot and an arm extending from said bracket to said pintle plate eccentrically with said pintle.
4. In a couch or davenport bed comprising a back and ends, and a seat movable with relation to said back and ends, means for pivoting said seat between said ends, stops and a plate located upon said seat and ends respectively to the rear of said pivoting means for locating said seat in open and closed positions, and a pivoted latch upon the rear edge of said seat adapted to engage said back in closed position.
In testimony whereof we ailiX our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
