N. C. WEIMER.

APPLICATION FILED rum, 1914v m lk- HE NORRIS PETERS CO-,PHOTO1LITHC WASHING TON D. C.
NOAH CHARLES WEIMER, OF GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO.
HARNESS.
Application filed February 27, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, NOAH C. WEIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Junction, county of Mesa, and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Harness, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to harness, and it consists of an improved connection for binding the holder in connection with the blinder and arranged to clasp on both sides of the holder and hold together the different layers of leather forming the blinder, to prevent ripping at the sides of the holder.
An object of the invention is to produce a bridle having blinders composed of a number of layers of leather attached thereto, in combination with holders connecting the outer edge of each blinder with the bridle, and a clasp engaging on both sides of each holder and passing through the several layers of leather, thereby constituting a releasable clamp for binding the holder in connection with the blinder, and preventing ripping of the seams which hold the different layers of leather together.
With the foregoing and other objects which will appear from the following description in view, l have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a part of a bridle having my invention combined therewith. Fig. 2 is an inner side view of a part of the blinder illustrating the clamp which connects the holder with the blinder and which prevents ripping of the seams. Fig. 3 is an upper edge view of a part of a blinder illustrating the holder passing between the layers constituting the blinder, and the clamp binding the holder in position. Fig. 4 is a sectional view along the line 4:4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an exterior view of a portion of a blinder illustrating a modified form of a clamp. Fig. 6 is a view of the inner side of the blinder further illustrating the clamp of modified construction. Fig. 7 is a sectional view substantially on the line 7-7 of Fig. 5.
In the structure illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 4., inclusive, the blinder 1 is composed of a number of layers of leather or other suitable material connected and held together by scams 2 passing through the several layers near the edges of said layers.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915.
Serial No. 821,620.
Each blinder is connected to a side 3 of the bridle. The outer layer of the material forming the blinder may be further secured to certain of the inner or intermediate layers by stitches L constituting a scam inwardly from the seam 2.
Each blinder is preferably provided with a holder 5 extending obliquely downwardly and forwardly from the top of the bridle, and terminating in a flat portion (Fig. 4:) passing between the outer and inner layers of which the blinder is composed. The stitches forming the seam 2 terminate at the sides of the space occupied by the holder 5. A U-shaped clamping element 6 has its arms extending through holes in the blinder at the sides of the holder 5, the outer ends of said arms being threaded. A clamping nut 7 is releasably threaded upon each end of the clamp, and said nuts are operative to clamp the member 6 firmly in position to embrace a part of the blinder and to clamp the end of the holder in position between the outer and inner layers of the blinder, as illustrated in Fig. l. The holder clamped in position in this manner will remain in connection with the blinder until released or forcibly pulled apart. The parts are so formed. that when sufficient force is applied to the blinder or to the holder the latter will slip from its connection with the blinder without breaking any of the parts. This is an improved feature of the invention, because it frequently occurs that the blinders or holders become engaged with stationary objects, such as trees, parts of fences, parts of vehicles, etc., so that when the horse moves its head the blinder or the holder becomes broken or damaged, necessitating that one or the other be replaced. This difficulty is avoided by providing a releasable connection in accordance with my invention.
Another important feature of the invention resides in the arrangement of the clamp with respect to the seam 2. The stitches of the seam 2 necessarily terminate at the sides of the space in which the holder extends, and repeated removal and replacing of the holder frequently breaks or rips the adja cent stitches. With the clamp reinforcing and clamping the different layers together at the sides of the holder, breaking and ripping of the seams is prevented. Thus, in addition to constituting a releasable connection for uniting the holder with the blinder the clamp also constitutes means for reinforcing the seams by which the different layers of the blinder are held together.
In Figs. 5, 6 and 7 I have illustrated a modified structure in which the blinder 1 is also composed of a number of layers held together by a seam 2. The holder 5 also extends into a space between the outer and inner layers of the blinder, and holes are formed through the blinder at the sides of the holder. In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 the clamp consists of a resilient clamping member 8 provided with an oblique extension 9 adapted to pass through one of the holes at the side of the holder (Fig. 7), and provided with an extension 10 adapted to press against the outer side of the holder. The hole through which the extension 9 passes may be reinforced by a tubular member 11 having its ends turned over and clamped against the inner and outer sides of the blinder. hen so arranged the tubular member constitutes a reinforcement for preventing separation of the layers of which the blinder is composed. The opposite end of the clamping member 8 is provided with a hole arranged to register with the hole through the blinder, and a clamping bolt 12 passes through said clamping member and through the blinder adjacent to the edge of the holder. A clamping nut 13 screws on the threaded end of the clamping bolt 12 and constitutes means for binding the clamping member firmly against the side of the blinder, thereby firmly clamping the holder between the layers of which the blinder is composed. Obviously the functions of the clamping member of this construction are substantially the same as the functions of the clamping member illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive.
It will be understood that there may be other modifications Without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention. I do not restrict myself to unessential details, but
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a blinder composed of different layers of material, of a holder extending between said layers of material, a clamping device extending through Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the said layers of material on both sides of said holder, and means for tightening and releasing said clamp device.
2. The combination with a blinder composed of different layers of material, stitches holding said layers together, and a holder extending between said layers, of a clamp device extending through said layers at opposite sides of said holder adjacent to said stitches, to reinforce said stitches and to hold said holder between the layers of said blinder, and manipulative means for tightening and releasing said clamp device substantially as described.
3. The combination with a blinder composed of different layers of material, a holder extending between said layers, and stitches binding said layers together, of a clamp device extending through said blinder at both sides of said holder adjacent to said stitches, and releasable means for clamping said clamp device in position to hold said blinder in connection with said holder, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a blinder, and a holder extending into said blinder, of a clamp device extending through said blinder at both sides of said holder and embracing said holder and a part of said blinder, and releasable means for holding said clamp device in position, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a blinder composed of different layers of material, a holder extending between said layers of material, and stitches holding said layers of material together at each side of said holder, of a clamp device extending through said blinder at both sides of said holder adjacent to said stitches, and releasable means for clamping said clamp device in position to hold said holder and blinder together and to reinforce said stitches at both sides of said holder, substantially as described.
In witness whereof, I have signed thi specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
