Application filed February 11, 1914.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that l, MATHIAs SMoLIK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in toys and its object is to produce a toy that is attractive in appearance and that may be manually operated through the medium of control levers to afford amusement because of its unique mechanical movement.
My invention comprises pivotally supported images, lever controlled, disposed adjacent a toy anvil and which images may be caused to intermittently strike the anvil in imitation of blacksmiths at work; connection with the operating lever is also provided whereby a bell is struck at each stroke upon the anvil thus giving the proverbial ring of the anvil as the device is operated.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved toy. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on line 22 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line H of Fig. 1.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My toy comprises the boX or housing 1 in which a transverse support 2 is disposed to which a pair of oppositely disposed images or figures 3, 4 are pivoted as at 5 outside their vertical center lines. Each image is connected by a link 6 to an operating lever 7 which is fulcrumed in a standard 8 secured to the base of the box 1 and said lever is projected out through an opening 9 in said box and terminates in a handle portion 10. The inner termination of the lever 7 is engaged by a return spring 11 secured to the floor of the box.
12 is a pitman extending through the partition 2 and provided upon one extremity with the anvil 13 and with a spring 14 abutting said anvil and the partition 2 to nor- Specification of Letters Patent.

mally retain said anvil the maximum distance above the partition. Below the partition the pitman is provided with a cotter 15 and the lower termination of said pitman is connected to a secondary lever 16 fulcrumed in a standard 17 disposed upon the floor of the box and a hammer 18 is carried by said lever to strike a gong or bell 19 carried by the post 20. In the hand of each of the images 3, 1 a hammer 21 is secured adapted as each image is rocked upon its pivot toward the anvil to strike the same;
Operation: Depressing the handle 10 of the lever 7 will oscillate the image 4 upon its pivot 5 away from the anvil and will oscillate the image 3 toward the anvil causing its hammer 21 to strike the same depressing the pitman 12 against the tension of spring 1 1 thus rocking the lever 16 in its standard and causing its hammer 18 to strike the gong 19. When the lever 7 is released the spring 11 will return it to normal position reversing the movement of the images and causing the hammer 21 of image 4.- to strike the anvil and again depress the same and so again ring the gong.
What is claimed is:
1. In a toy comprising a housing and a transverse partition within the same, oppositely disposed images pivoted to said partition, a spring-connected operating lever fulcrumed in said housing and projected therebeyond, connection between said lever and the said images, hammers carried by said images, an anvil disposed in the plane of movement of said hammers, a pitman carrying said anvil and passing through said partition, a spring disposed upon said pitman between said partition and anvil, a secondary lever fulcrumed in said box and connected to said pitman, a gong, and a hammer carried by said secondary lever adapted to strike said gong in response to each movement of the said operating lever.
2. ln a toy comprising a housing and a transverse partition within the same, oppositely disposed images pivoted to said partition and provided with striking hammers, a pitman disposed between said images and passing through said partition and adapted for limited movement in a vertical plane, an anvil carried by said pitman in the plane of operation of the said hammers, manually operable means fulcrumed within said housing and projected therebeyond and connected to said images for causing the hammers thereof to intermittently strike said anvil, a as my own I have hereto afiixed my signagong, a hammer, and connection between ture in the presence of two subscribing witsald hammer and the said pltman whereby nesses.
movement of the latter in one direction Will MATHIAS SMOLIK. 5 bring said hammer into contact with said Witnesses:
