Lc. BARTON. T-oy-.Daucr- NO IZQQLL Patented Maj/11,1875.
THE GRAPHIC C0.PHOT0LITH.39&4I PARK PLAGEJLY.
UNITED STATEs PATENT QEEICE.
ELIJAH CLARK BARTON, EAST HAMPTON, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOY DANGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l=2,99-L,` dated May 1l, 1875; application filed october 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH CLARK BAR- TON, of East Hampton, Middlesex county, Connecticut, have invented a Dancing and Musical Toy, of which the followingis a specifica-tion The object of my invention is a dancing and musical toy, consisting of a loosely-jointed figure supported above a platform bya bent Wire, and moving in a circle, when the platform is agitated, to the accompaniment of a gong or bell, which is caused to sound by the same agency as that which imparts motion to the figure.
A plate or disk, A, having at one side a handle, a, is provided at one side with a coiledwire gong or bell, D, similar to those used in clocks, the gong being arranged a short distance from the plate, and inclosed by a casing,
b. In the center of the plate is a socket, c, for the reception of the bent end of an L- shaped wire or standard, B, to the upper end of which is secured a jointed figure, F, of any suitable character, arranged so that the feet shall be in contact, or nearly in contact, with the plate A.
The figure is put in motion by grasping the handle a between the thumb and forefinger, as shown in the drawing, and moving the outer end of the thumb to and from the position shown in dotted lines, so as to strike the plate a series of blows, while at the same time the plate is tilted slightly, first in one direction, and then in another. The result of these operations is to impart a rapid swinging movement `to the jointed limbs ofthe figure, to cause the bent standard B to turn in its socket, carrying the gure in a circle, while, at the same time, the coiled wire strikes against the under side of the plate, producing a musical accompaniment to the movements of the figure.
In place of a coiled wire, a cup-shaped bell or gong having a spring-hammer vibrated by the movements of the plate may be used 5 and the platform and its bell Ymay be employed in connection with figures or devices of another character than that illustrated.
I claiml. In a toy, the combination of the plate A, provided with a handle, a, and having a socket', c, and the wire B, bent to flt the socket, eX- tending over the face of the plate, projecting upward, and carrying a jointed ligure, F, as set forth.
2. The combination, in a toy, of the plate A, having a handle, a, and a wire bell, D, arranged below the plate, to strike the latter when vibrated, as described.
3. The combination, with a plate, A, constructed to be supported by the hand of a jointed figure, F, connected to a wire attached to the plate, and a bell, D, secured below the plate, so that the movement of the ligure and the sonndin g of the bell are both eiected by agitating the plate, as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
E. C. BARTON.
Witnesses:
