and air to the fire, more particularly to they manner of feeding and directing said charge; and this is a division of a patent application filed by me June 14, 1915, Serial Number 77 3,709, for improvements 1n regulators.
The object of my invention is to provide' in a furnace and smoke preventing apparatus therefor, a novel means for admitting and directing a charge of steam and air to` the fire.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a furnace, passing through the fire door and opening thereof, and illustrating my 1mprovements embodied therewith. Fig. 2 1s a view in perspective of the Ere-door and door-liner, looking at the back of same.
My improvements are adapted to be em bodied with furnaces which are provided with time regulated devices for causing a charge of steam and air to be sprayed Into the re-chamber and over the ire when the furnace has been charged with fresh coal, for the purpose of assisting in perfect combustion and for preventing the formation of smoke and soot from the volatile gases that arise from combustion. The injection of steam into the fire-chamber has been done at various points therein, and it is to such matter that my invention relates, together with means for directing the charge of steam in a certain manner and supplying same with a charge of air, thus eecting a different nature and effectiveness of th steam charge. 'f
The furnace shown is of a common structure, comprising a front 3, fire-opening 4, fire-chamber 5, and a boiler 6 having a stack 7 leading therefrom. A fire-door 8 is hinged to the furnace front, covering the fire-opening 4 and is formed with its face offset from the furnace front by sides 9 of the door.
The face of the Ere-door is formed with an opening r10 which is covered by a door 11 hinged to the fire-door. The top wall 9 of Patented Mar. 9, 1915. Y
the fire-door is formed with two apertures i 12 spaced apart and opening to the backl of Y the door; and through each of these. apertures extends a steam discharge pipe 13 which carries a discharge head 14 adapted to direct steam in a spray toward and over 1 V the vfire in the lire-chamber. By positioning the steam discharge at this pointv it is ynot subject tothe intense-heat that it would be if located in the re-chamber, and thus a ing orderthan vone located :in the latter position Where the steam discharge heads are easily rendered ineffective because of the great heat they are subject to; also with this construction no boring through the fur-g nace front is necessary to gain entrance to the re, and the mounting and structure of the steam feed piping is made veryV simple, always accessible, and easily repaired.
, Steam is supplied to the pipe 13 by a pipe 15, and the passage of steam through pipe' 15 is controlled by a time regulator 16, the subject matter of which forms no part of this application so that I have, deemed it unnecessary to illustrate its working or operation. The said time regulator is adapted to operate a rock-shaft 17 and open door-11 -iner spray jet may be maintained in workthrough connection 18; thus the said reguf lator simultaneously causes a chargel of steam to issue from head 14 and to open door 11.
A door-liner 19 is attached to the inner side of the fire-door and has an opening communicating with the fire-door opening 10, the liner o'pening'havingV deector walls extending into the fire-opening 4. These Y deflector walls comprise vertical side walls 20 and a wall 21 which extends from the bottom of the liner opening, upward into the lire-opening at an angle, and terminating below and at re side of the discharge y head 14. Thus .the deflector walls formk a peculiar guided air passage from the firedoor air inlet to a point adjacent the steam discharge, and such that the air and steam inlets into the fire-opening are from one point and both are diffused into one charge, this concentration giving a force and effectiveness that is not obtained by separately admitting steam and air. The door-liner wall 2l is provided with vents therethrough gand the door-liner acts also as a means for deflecting heat of thefire from affecting a person standing opposite the fire-door when the air-inlet thereof is open.`
I claim as my invention:
l. Thecombination with furnace having a fire-door lopening formed through its front wall, of asteam supply pipe -leading to and discharging into said opening at a point ad- 'jacent to the outer end thereof, a fire-door covering the outer end of said fire-door opening and having Aan air .opening therein, a` movable closure for said air opening, `means for operating the said closure and the steam discharge simultaneously, and` a defiectoron the inner side of the fire-door, said deflector forming an air guide from saidair opening toa point adjacent to the discharge end of said steam supply pipe,`
whereby lair being so guided incits passage to the re is diifused with the steam adjacent to the point yof discharge thereof land Within said fire-door opening.
2. The combination` with a .furnace having-a fire-door opening formed through its Copies of this patentmay be obtainedfor ve ycents each, byraddressng the KCommssioner of Patents,V
