To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, (VILLIE C. BEAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Preventers, of which the following is a speci fication.
This invention relates to smoke preventers for furnaces and such as are automatically operated to feed a charge of steam and air to a furnace.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved smoke preventing apparatus for furnaces and such that will, when set in operation, automatically regulate and cause a properfeed of air to the fire and charge the volatile or hydrocarbon gases resulting from combustion, with steaminsuch a manner as to provent improper combustion of the volatile gases to thus prevent the causing of smoke and loss of efiiciency due to the causing of smoke.
The further object is in the construction of an improved form of time regulator for controlling the smoke preventing appara' tus; and further, in the construction ofsaid smoke preventing apparatus.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1,
is a face view of a furnace front showing my improved apparatus applied thereto, the parts in their operative positions. Fig. 2, is a vertical section taken-on the line 22 of Fig. 1, the stack damper being shown dotted. Fig. 3, is a detail view in perspective of the fire door looking at its inner side. Fig. 4, is an enlarged longitudinal section through the time regulator for controlling the several operative parts. Fig. 5, is a plan section of the regulator as taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6, is a sectional view taken on the line 66 of Fig. 4.
The furnace to which my improved apparatus is applied is of a common type, having a front 7, fire opening 8, fire chamber 9, and a boiler 10 having a stack 11 leading therefrom. Fire doors 12 are carried at the point of the fire openings and are provided with air openings covered by doors 13. A rocker shaft 14 is mounted in brackets fastened to the furnace face, carries fixed arms 15 which have a chain connection with doors 13, and is adapted to be rocked by the arms 16 having a link connection 17 with the rocker-shaft, said arms 16 being actuated which have steam discharge jets 21 at their ends so disposed as to charge steam over the length of the fire. A damper 22 is shown located in the stack 11 and is controlled by connections 23, but in varying types of furnaces this damper may be positioned in a vertical stack or in the breeching. These actuable members, to wit, the rocker shaft,
steam valve, and damper, are operably-connected with a time regulator carried at the face of the furnace. This regulator is in the form of a cylinder 24 having brackets I 25 securing it to the furnace face, the cylinder havinga closed bottom 26 and a detachable top 27 having a central opening 28 therein, also a filling plug 28 which has an air vent therethrough. A piston head 29 is reciprocable within the cylinder by the tubular piston rod 30 held fixed in a centrally disposed sleeve 31 by bolt 32, said piston being actuable through its cross-head connection 33 which has an operable link 34'and arm 35 connection with rocker-shaft 14. The piston has a recessed bottom 36 forming a valve seat 37 and a cylindrical opening 38 contained within said valve seat, extendingv longitudinally through the piston and com municating with the cylinder chamber 39.
Depending spaced pairs of lugs 40 are formed depending from the piston head and serve as rests in contact with the cylinder bottom 26 to limit the downward movement of the piston.
A rod 41 having an adjusting head 42 is carried slidably in piston rod 30 and is held yieldingly in an operative position by a coiled spring 42 adjacent its upper end and interposed between the end of rod 30 and a washer 43 fixed with rod 41, the spring being inclosed in a tubular cap 44 which is screwed in connection with piston rod 41. The lower end of rod 41 has a movable end 45 connected thereto by the universal joint" 46, and in an adjustable screw connection with said end 45 is a valve 47 held upon seat 37 by the action of spring 53. This valve is formed with extending arms 48 in terposed between lugs 40 and thus limited from radial displacement, alsofrom vertical displacement by the cotter-pins 49; a tapered opening 50 in which the tapered end of rod a5 is located within a close proximity thereto and forming an adjustable needle valve; an opening 51 leading from said :needle valve opening 50 to the opening 38; and has a filtering screen 52 attached to its under side covering the-needle valve opening. A coiled spring 53 is positioned on end rod l5 intermediate the joint A6 and the top of valve A7 to maintain the rod A1 yieldable against rotation with respect to said valve. A by-pass 54 leads from the bottom of the cylinder chamber toa joint above the piston head (with the head in its inoperative position). The cross-head. 33 has an upwardly extending arm 55 which has a yoked end 56 straddling steam pipe 18 to maintain said cross-head from lateral displacement, and a by-pass lever 57 is pivotally carried by said arm 05 and rests on the end of rod 41 whereby upon downward pressure of said lever the valve 4:7 will be nnseated. The steam valve 18 is operatively connected to crosshead 33 by a lever'58.
A door liner or deflector 59 is carried at the inner side of the fire door 12 and has an open face adjacent the opening for door 13, inwardly extending deflector walls comprising side walls 60 and back walls 61 which has vent openings 62 therein; and since back wall 61 extends inward beyond the jet 21 an air passage is formed leading directly to these jets. Thus. the door liner performs a double function, that of deflecting the heat of the furnace from the operator when door 137is opened, and that of forming an air conduit to the steam jets. This cooperating air conduit with the steam jets allows a fresh charge of air to commingle and intermix with a charge of steam to secure an eflicient and effective diffusing charge to the volatile gases.
The timing of the regulator is by the passage of a liquid through its valves, the liquid most suitable being oil, and this is contained within the cylinder chamber 39 to a level about the height of the upper bracket 25. The regulator is shown in its inoperative position in all views and upon opening either fire door, arm 16 will be actuated to rock shaft 1% and thus raise the piston in the cylinder through the crosshead connection. This movement will operate damper 22 to increase the draft to the fire and open steam valve 18 to allow steam to be discharged from jets 21 into the fire, and will alsoopen doors 13 to allow fresh air to be drawn and intermix with the steam charge as above described. Duringthe raising of the piston the oil contained thereabove will pass below same through valve e7 which is opened by-weight of the oil, and when the fire has been charged with coal and the doors closed, the weight of the operative parts will cause the piston to descend. In descending the valve 47 will be seated and the oil will pass upward through the needle a valve 50,- thus giving a slow descent to the piston. During the time elapsing for the piston to descend, the air and steam charges upon the fire should have accomplished their purposes and as the piston reaches the near end of its descent the remaining oil at its bottom will pass quickly upward through by-pass 54 thus giving the piston a quick final movement to effectively shut off the steam supply. By screw adjustment of the rod 41 the degree of opening of the needle valve may be varied and thus the length of time varied for the piston to descend. hen the piston is in its raised position and it is desired to have it drop quickly to an inoperative position, the by-pass lever 57 is. pulled down thus ,unseating' valve 47 and allowing the oil to pass upward therethrough.
The valve structure herein disclosed .is novel in its construction and operation and performs its functions with an effective effh. ciency. The cooperative relation between; the two valves will be readily seen since primarily they are embodied. in a single valve structure, and further, they may be con trolled by a common operable means. Certain structural features are also prevalent in this arrangement of valves, as it will be seenthat since the rod 45 (the needle valve) is 1 screw adjustable with valve 47, to maintain both valves in a positive relation means are provided to hold the valve 47 from rotation upon its seat and means are also providedto hold rod 45 from rotation in connection with valve 47 the needle valve is; held in positive relation with valve 47 and is laterally movable therewith relative-to its adjusting means, by the universal joint 46; that thisstructure allows a single cylinder to be utilized which is devoid of auxiliary by-passages and valves; and allows. also a common means contained within the cylinder and extending to the outer side thereof whereby both valves may be actuated and controlled manually.
I claim as my invention,
1. A regulator comprising a cylinder, a piston reciprocable within the cylinder and having a longitudinal opening forming a passage therethrough, a valve covering said opening and movable to open said passage, an adjustable by-pass valve carried bysaid movable valve and movable therewith, said movable valve adapted to be held yield-- ingly closed, operable means having connec tion with said bypass valve, said operable means being adjustable to vary the opening of said bypass valve, and means for operatingsaid operable means for moving said movable valve to operative and inoperative positions in said piston passage.
2. A regulator comprising a cylinder, a
piston reciprocable within the cylinder and having an opening forming a longitudinal passage therethrough, a valve covering said opening and movable to open said passage, an adjustable bypass valve carried by said movable valve and being movable therewith, means for holding said movable valve from radial displacement, an operable member, a universal connection between said member and said by-pass valve, and said operable member extending to the outer side of thev cylinder and being movable with said movable valve.
3. A regulator comprising a cylinder, a piston reciprocable within the cylinder and having a longitudinal passage therethrough, a movable valve for closing said passage and being moved to an operative and inoperative position through the reciprocations of the piston, an opening in the valve, an ad ustable by-pass valve stem carried by sald valve and located in said valve opening, means movable with said movable valve and having an operable connection with'said by-pass valve stem, and said means being movable to move said cylinder passage valve to an operative and inoperative position and movable independent of said movement to adjust said by-pass valve stem in its opening.
4. A regulator comprising a cyllnder, a piston for the cylinder having a longitudinal passage therethrough, a piston rod for the piston, a check valve adapted to control said passage, a port passing through said check valve, a valve stem screw-threaded with said check valve and located in said port, a rod reciprocable and rotatable within said piston rod, and said rod having a movable connection with said valve stem, and an operable extension at the free end of the piston rod adapted upon being rotated to adjust said valve stem in the valve opening and upon being reciprocated to move said check valve to operative and inoperative positions.
5. A regulator comprising a cylinder, a piston for the cylinder having a longitudinal passage therethrough, a piston rod for the piston, a check valve adapted to control said passage, a port passing through said check valve, an adjustable valve carried by said check valve and located in said port, an operable member for controlling the adjustment of said adjustablevalve and means for maintaining said operable member in a positive position relative to said check valve during the operative movements of said check valve.
6. A regulator comprising a cylinder, a piston for the cylinder having a longitudinal passage therethrough, a check valve disposed at the under side of the piston, covering said passage and movable away from the piston to open the passage, a by-pass port through said check valve, an adjustable valve "carried by said check valve and lo cated in said by-pass port,an operable member having connection with said by-pass valve to adjust same and to move said check cylinder and a piston reciprocable therein and having a passage therethrough, of a check-valve for said passage, a by-pass port through the check-valve, a bypass valve adjustable in saidport, means for reciprocating the piston, and means movable with the piston and being connected to said bypass valve, the latter means being movable to adjust the by-pass valve and being movable independent of the piston operating means to unseat the check-valve.

A regulator comprising a cylinder, a piston reciprocable within the cylinder, a longitudinal passage through the piston, a check valve for said passage, a by-pass port through the check-valve, a by-pass valve carried by the check valve for said by-pass port, said check valve being actuated by the reciprocation of the piston, and a strainer carried by the check valve to the side thereof adjacent the bottom of the piston.
9. A regulator comprising a cylinder, a piston reciprocable within the cylinder, a longitudinal passage through the piston, a
check valve for said passage, a by-pass port 7 I check valve, a spring in connection with said by-pass valve for holding same against displacement from its set position in said port, and an operable member connected to said by-pass valve and extending to the outer side of the cylinder whereby said by-pass valve may be adjusted in said check valve port.

In a regulator, the combination with a cylinder and a piston reciprocable therein and having an opening therethrough, of a check-valve for said opening, a by-pass port through the check-valve, a bypass valve adjustably attached to the check-valve, means connected to the by-pass valve extended to the outer side of the cylinder and being operable from said outer side to adjust the by-pass valve in the port opening and to operate said check-valve, and means for 7 means adjustably attached to the checkvalve, operable means for reciprocating the piston, and means carried by the piston operable means, being. cooperable With said by-pass valve means and adapted to beoperated to unseat the check'valve through move ment independent of the piston operating means.

In a regulator of the character set forth, the combination With a cylinder and a piston therein having an opening therethrough, a check-valve for said opening, a passage through the check-valve, a pistonrod fixed to the piston, an operable connection to said valve extending to the outer side of the cylinder and being operable to unseat the check-valve, and means connected to the piston-rod and being cooperative With said extended valve connection for operating the same to effect unseating of the check-valve.

In a regulator of the character set forth, the combination With a cylinder, piston means therein having an opening therethrough, and means for reciprocating the piston, a check-valve for said :opening, ,a; by-pass establishing communication between both sides of the cheok-valve, a by-pass valve adjustable in said by-pass, said. by-pass valve having means cooperative with the check-valve to eflectunseatmg ofthe same,
said by-pass valve means being extended to the outer side of the cylinder and operable from said outersidesto adjust the by-pass valve and being movable independently of the piston reciprocating means to unseat the WILLIE o. BEAM;
