SWITCH-PLATE.
Specication of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 9, 1915.
v Application filed May 12, 1913. Serial No. 767,076.
To all lwlw/fm. it may concern.:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. SPERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Switchf This invention relates to an improvement in plates for electric switches, and particularly to plates which are provided with a swinging cover or vention being toV assemble or connect the` door with the plate by a hinge without soldering or other expensive operation of milling; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and'lparticu larly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I have shown a single door receptacle switch plate, but it is obvious that double doors might be constructed in the same way.
In carrying out my invention I employ a plateQ which may lie-struck up from sheet metal with a central opening 3 corresponding to the door 4 which is substantially circular with a knuckle 5 at its upper end. The plate is also formed with perforations 6, 7, formed by striking the metal inward so as to provide inwardly projecting collars 8, 9, around the perfor-ations. The upper end of the plate 10. by a pintle 11, andvthis hinge plate is formed with a perforation 12 through which the collar 8 may extend, and the inner end of the collar is upset over the plate plate 2.' same way is a stop 13 which prevents the plate door, the object of the inwhereby door is connected to a hinge' ing witnesses.
door 4 from swinging inward, -and preferably and asl will be formed with a finger-opening 14 below the door to facilitate opening the door by the linger. The perforations 6 and 7 provide screw holes by which the switch may he secured `in position. It will thus be seen that the hinge is connected with the switch plate without soldering or otherexpensive operation of milling, and that the device may be formed from comparatively light metal and tension can be imposed by the hinge plate to cause the door to remain open when raised.
I claim 1. The coinbiinition with a switch plate formed Jfrom sheet metal with a central opening and a screw hole above said opening, ward forming an inwardly extending integral collar, of a door adapted `1to close the central opening, and a hinge plate with which the upper end of the door is connected, said hinge plate formed with an opening to set over said collar by the upsetting of which the hinge plate is rigidly secured to the rear -face of said switch plate.
2. TheA combination with a sheet metal switch plate formed with a central opening and with a screw hole above and a screw hole below said opening, the metal around said hole struck inward forming inwardly projecting collars, of a door adapted to close said opening, a hinge plate with which the said door is pivotally connected, said hinge plate formed with an opening adapted to set over the upper collar the upsetting of which rigidly connects said hinge plate to the rear face of the switch plate, and a stop set-over the lower collar which is upset the said stop is rigidly secured to the inner face of thelswitch plate.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence' of two subscrib- HENRYT. SPERRY. Witnesses:
