ALFRED COPONY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGN'OR T WILLIAM H. MINER, OF
' CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED CAST-STEEL AND WROUGHT-IRON YOKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
-Patented Mar. 9, 1915.
Application filed March 23, 1914. Serial No. 826,807.
To (1.! whom it may; concern lie it known that I, ALFRED CoPoNY, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new gings which is composed partly of steel castings and partly of wrought iron, the parts being so arranged that the yoke embodies all the advantages ofthe two different kinds of metal of which it is made.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a combined cast steel and wrought iron yoke which may be used in a horizontal position and attached to the coupler by means of a connecting kcy..
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of the parts and devices herein shown, described or claimed.
in the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of one form of yoke embodying my improve ments. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1. Figs..3 and 4 are vertical, sectional views taken on the lines 3 3 and respectively of Fig. Fig. 5 is a rear end elevation of the yoke. Fig. (3 is a side elevation of another form of yoke enibodyinglny improvements. Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. Fig. 9 is a vertical, sectional view taken on the line 88 of Fig. 7 and Fig. 9 is a rear end elevation of the yoke shown in Figs. 6 and 7.
Referring now more particularly to the form of yoke shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive. 10, 10 denotetwo pieces of wrought iron, each of which forms a side arm of the yoke and a pin i' .l'urear portion thereof. Each st ap of wrought iron has two horizontally extending portions 11 anda curved, bent end 12 which encircles an elongated boss 13 on the outer side of the steel casting 14, the castings 14 being each provided with a longitudinally extending slot 15 adapted to receive a coupler connecting key therethrough. Each casting 1d, on its inner face,
is beveled 'as shown at 16.16 to provide'for freedom of movement between the yoke and, coupler. The rear ends of the wrought iron straps 1O abut each other in the'central line of the yoke, as indicated at 17 and the two pieces of wrought iron are firmly and rigidly connected to each other by means of a wrought iron clip 18 ha ing tongues 19'bent therearound and brought together on the rear side. of the yoke; as indicated at '20. The clip 18, as clea. ly shown in the draw ing', also forms a filler at the rear end of the yoke against which the rear follower of the draft rigging ma abut and be moved. thereby.
In the structure shown more particularly .in Figs. 6' to 9 inclusi e, two straps of wrought iron 110, 110, are used, each of which. at its forward end. is bent around and encircles an elongated boss 113 on a is furthern'iore provided on its inner side.
with beveled faces 11%, 116. The rear'ends of the wrought iron straps are brought together as indicated at 117 and the same are secured together by means of a filler plate 118 secured thereto by rivets 121. In the structure shown in F igs. G to 9.; it will be noted that the width of the yoke through out the lengths of both arms andrear portion the same. thus differing somewhat from the yoke shown. in Figs 1 to 5 inclusive where the curved end portions of the wrought iron straps are oliset where the same encircle the bosses of the steel castings. To maintain the vertical width of the arms of the yoke constant throughout its length, portions of the metal thereof are upset, as indicated at 122 where the straps encircle the bosses of the steel castings;
From the rufeceding description it will be seen that I have provided a combined cast steel and wrought iron yoke which may be used in a horizontal'position and detachably connected to a coupler by zneans of an ordi nary connecting key, the yokepossessing all the advantages of a wrought iron strap which has greatest strength under tension and yet which will not be ilistorted or upset by the coupler connecting key under draft inasmuch as. the key contacts directly with the steel castings ich is well adapted to resist lthestrains placed thereupon. The yoke isfurthermore-of simple construction and may be manufactured at relatively small expense.
Although I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred embodiment of my improvements, yet it'will be Understood that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and all such changes and modifications are contemplated as come within the scope of the.
claims appended hereto.
I claim:-
1; A yoke for railway draft. arscomprising two slotted cast pieces eacli of which is provided witha boss, the slots extending through the bosses, and two wrought-iron straps each of which is doubledupon itself gears comprising two wrought iron straps each of which is doubled upon itself and provided with an elongated recess located at the front endsof the yoke arms, the por: tions of each strap to the rear of said-recesses formed therein being brought together and a east member secured to each of said straps, each cast member having a boss seated within the elongated recess of the corresponding wrought iron straps.
3. A yoke for railway draft gears comprising two cast steel end pieces each of which is slotted to receive a couplerconnecting key and provided with an elongated boss, two straps of wrought iron, each of whichisbent around a boss of one of said cast-pieces, said wrought iron straps having their rear ends bent to form the rear portion of the yoke, and means for rigidly connecting the rear bent ends of said wrought iron straps, substantially as specified.
Signed this 13 day of'March, 1914, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
