BATTER-BOARD.
To all whom it may concern. I
Be it known that I, RUSSELL H. PEOK, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Palmerton, county of Carbon, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Batter-Boards, of which the followingis a specification. Thisinvention relates tobatter boards and particularly to a clamp for 'adjustably setting up the batter board to any height or span relative to an excavation. Heretofore such batters as have been in use have consisted simply of a board nailed'to the guide posts. The disadvantage of that construction lay in the fact that the batter board could not be adjusted and could nottherefore be used again so that the material became waste stock after its initial use. To
the end therefore of providing a batter,
board which will be adjustable both as to height and to span to adapt it to any level I have devised my present invention. In it, I adj ustably clamp the board flatwise near each end to the guide posts so that the board may be adjusted both vertically and horizontally.
The construction and operation of my invention will be more fully disclosed in the specification that follows.
In the drawings forming a part of that specification I have shown as an illustrative embodiment a form of batter board and clamp which have been found satisfactory and efiicient in use.
Throughout specification and drawings like reference numerals are correspondingly applied, and in these drawings Figure 1 is a view' showing one application of my batter board. Fig. 2 is a section of one of the clamps and tightening levers therefor taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1,1 ig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3, Fig. 2, and Figs. 4. and 5 are details of the removable handle.
In the embodiment selected as an illustration I have shown a batter board 1 in its application to an excavation 2. The batter board is adjustably set up on guide posts 3, driven solid into the ground on each side of the excavation, by clamps of special construction. Each clamp consists of a spring plate a to which is riveted or otherwise fastened near each end, the flange 5 of a clamping arm 6. Each arm 6 has its free end formed as a hook 7 adapted to be engaged over the rod 3 in spaced relation to the hook of the cooperating arm of the Specification of Letters Patent.

The resiliency of the plates is preferably suchas to permit the levers to be tightened and released by a partial swing in either direction. This permits the board to be clamped to a new position irrespective of whether or not the levers were returned to their original position before the board was released. In practice I havefound that'the friction ordinarily developed between the cams and the side of the board is sufficient to hold the levers in tightened position. Obviously, however, a positive lock for the levers when in their tightened position could;
clamped by tightening the levers 8. The ad-' justment of the board for height and for span is had without removing the board from its clamps by releasing the levers and sliding the board and clamps up or down on the posts 8, if an adjustment for height is desired, and by sliding the board transversely in the clamps without moving the clamps, if an adjustment for span is required, until the proper level is established.
While I have shown and described my invention in its application to the field of engineering, it is understood that I do not limit myself'to this or any other application but reserve the right to use the invention in any capacity where it would perform the functions intended. V

What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.
