UNITED STATES PATENT orrion HUGO GORDON DUVAL, OF'NEW YORK, N. Y.
BINDER.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Application filed May'4,'1914. Serial No. 836,267. 1 I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HUGO GORDON DUVAL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means for temporarily binding books within covers, and the same has for its object more particularly, to provide a simple, efiicient and reliable device whereby a book may be temporarily bound within a cover in such manner that the same may be readily detached therefrom when it is desired to change the book or remove the same for any reason.
Further said invention has for its object to provide a binder comprising a cover, a support within the cover, and a removable attaching 'member adapted to engage said support and be passed through said cover,
and then secured in place by a locking memher which serves to lock said attaching member to said cover, and to secure the book duly in position upon said support and embraced by attaching member and the cover.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in'the claims.
. In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein l1ke numerals of reference indicate like parts F1gure 1 is a sectional view taken on the line 11 of Fig. 2, showing one form of binder constructed according to and embodying my invention Fig. 2 is a top view thereof; Fig. 3 is a rear edge view of the binder, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged, horizontal section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1 showing the upper portion of the attaching member, and the manner of locking the same in position within the binder in order to secure a book therein.
In said drawings 10 designates abinder comprising a front coverportion 11 and a back cover portion 12 foldably secured along their vertical edges to a back 13. The back 13 and the cover portions 11 and 12 are preferably formed of heavy binders board or analogous material and covered-with cloth or other suitable material. Adjacent to the bracket is tapered toward its free end and provided with a transverse slot 16." Adj a-, cent to the upper edge of the'back 13 is pro-1 vided a vertically extending slot into which is fitted an eyelet 17 having an elongated opening therein. p
18 denotes an attaching member which is preferably made of a flat piece of metal pro-- vided adjacent to its lower end with oppositely arranged recesses 19, '19 which serve to produce a head 20 at the lower end of the attaching member 18 which head is united to said attaching member 18 by a reduced section 21. The other or upper end of'said attaching member 18 is provided with a pro- Patented Mar. 9, 1915. I
jection 22 arranged at right anglesil-to the.
body portion of said attaching member and provided at its extreme end withan aperture 23 to receive a suitable suspending or supporting member 24 preferably madeof cord in the form of a ring, or'of leather or other suitable flexible material.
25 denotes a book which is secured within the binder 10 by having its lower edge sup:
ported upon the horizontal portionof the bracket 14, and its'back embraced'by the longitudmal portion of the attaching member 18 at or near the middle ofsaid book. The upper edge of said book is confined be? low the lateral projection 22 extendingfroin the upper end of said attaching member 18.
In order to secure a book within the cover portion l0,-it merely becomes necessary to remove the attaching member 24 from the aperture 23' in said end 22, and thence draw said end 22 inwardly between'the back and front cover portions of the binder until the same is wholly withdrawn from the eyelet 17 arranged in said back 13. Thereupon said attaching member 18 is given a quarter ofv a turn whereby the head 20 at thelower end' thereof will be brought intoregister I with the'transverse opening 16 provided in the free end of the bracket 14 and thus per? mitof the removal of said attaching member from said bracket 14. Thereupon the attaching member 18 is disposed between the pages of the book at a point near the middle of the book, and forced backwardly against the back of the book as far as the same will go. The head 20 at the lower projecting end of the attaching member -18 is thence rein serted into the transverse opening 16--in the bracket 14, and the -:atta:ching mem.- ber together with the back 25 given a quarter of a turn which will bring the head at right angles to the transverse slot 16 H1 of said attaching member then secured,to--
gether by means ofa knot or other suitable fastening, as the case may be. r a a It willbe observed that by means of my novel construction of attaching means. the
suspending and supporting'member 24:, by
means of which the'book and its binder may be supported or suspended, serves. also to lock the attaching member in positionwith-i in the binder and to hold the book firmly in place therein and below said, attaching member. 1v H \Vhen the parts have been adjusted as hereinabove described, it becomes impossible to remove the book from the binder without releasing oruntying the supporting. member 24 and removing the same entirely from the end 22 of saidv attaching member ll as said supporting member 24: serves'to lock the several parts securely in position a Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by. Letters Pat-. ent is: r
1. A binder comprising a back, apair of covers thereon, a member rigidly secured to said back adjacent to one of its ends, an attaching \member adapted to engage at one end with said member and at its other end to extend through said back adjacent to the other end of said back, and a suspending member engaging. the end of said attaching member projectingbeyond said back,
substantially as specified. r
2. A binder comprising a back, and a pair of'covers connected thereto, a support rig-' back, and a suspending: member adapted to engage the portion of. said attaching. member extending through said back whereby to secure said attaching member to said binder and to secure a book in positionrbelow co ies of thistpatent may be obtained for said attaching member, substantially as specified;
,3. ,A binder comprising a back and a pair of covers connectedthereto; said back having an opening therein adjacent to its upper end, an-angular support secured upon an inner side-of said back adjacent to its lower end, anattaching member adapted to interlock at one end with said supporting member, and its other end to extend through [the opening in, the upper end of said back, and a securing member engaging, the portion of said attaching member projecting beyond Elbe1 rear of said back, substantially as speci- .4. A binder comprisinga back and a pair of covers hinged thereto; said back having" an aperture therein adjacent to its upper end, a bracket secured .upon the inner side of said back adjacent to its lower, end, a
fiat attaching member provided at. one end,
with meansadapted to interlock withsaid bracket, andat its upper end with an: angue lar projection adapted to be passed through the opening in the. upper portion ofsa-id back, and a, detachable securing member,
adapted to. engage the portionof said at taching member extending through said back, substantially as, specified.
5. bindercomprising a back and a pair, of covershinged thereto, said back having; a vertically extending slot therein adjacent, to its, upper end, an angular bracket :rigidliy,
secured upon the innerside of said back ad 7 j acent to the lower endthereof and provided in its .treeiportion with a transversely extending slot, a flat, longitudinal attaching member provided .at its lower end with a reduced portion adapted :to interlolckiwith the transverse slot in said bracket, a later-h ally projecting portion provided at the up: per end of said iattachingmember adapted to bepassed through the slot adjacent to the. upperend ofsaid back, and an attaching. member, removably' secured to, the free, end.v of said laterally projecting; portion extend-,-
tially as specified,,.
Signed at the city of New York, in the ing beyond'the rear of said fback,,substa n\ county. and State of New York, ,this25th day of April, one thousand nine hundred and fourteen.
