Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Marl 2,
Serial N0. 759,353.'
machine for cleaning cushions, carpets, etc,-
and has for its object to provide asectional brush especiallyadapted to the cleaning of such articles, or for any use to-whi'ch it may be put. p
The invention has in view to provide a scrubbing or cleaning brush, in generally cylindrical form, consisting of a central spindle or core having. a rotating shaft, a plurality of housings or holding boxes thereon,
.and a corresponding series of individual brushes removably mounted therein, as shall be more fullyhereinafter described.
The present application is a continuation of my prior application for cushion cleaning machine, Serial No. 7414845, filed Janyi'll,
One preferred form of the device is illus-- trated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is an enlarged sectional detail.
view of my improved brush partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the brush. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of one of the brush holders or housings.
The improved revoluble brush construction which I have especially designed is in:
tended to provide for reversal of the sev eral brush sections, or renewal thereof when worn. For such purpose the central core or body of the brush57, which may be of wood or other suitable material, having the central actuating shaft 9, is made polygonal in cross section, as hexagonal, or octagonal,
as shown. Secured v up on such polygonal face is a series of housings 58, which may be conveniently made of sheet metahhavlng diverging sides 59 terminating 1n inwardly turned lips 60 and providing a receiving dovetail shaped recess for each individual,
brush back 61, of corresponding 'shape in cross section, with an end'nost terminal wall 59'. By this construction each brush, having the usual bristles (32, may be inserted length-wise of the main brush structure and housings having radially disposed di fixedly. held in its particular housing, so that when all of the several brushes are thus assembled they will be maintained in operative position, and will provide a sub stantially continuous peripheral brush surface. For the purpose of so holding the several brush sections and housings against longitudinal movement, one or both ends of the central shaft 9 or 10 may be provided with a disk or collar 63 having a securing set screw 64, or other suitable means, whereby the brush. sections may be maintained in place and may also be easily removed. Thus, after the brush has been used for some little time, the brush bristles will have a tendency to be bent backwardly from the direction of action of the article being brushed; In such case, the brush sections are Withdrawn from their longitudinal housings and reversed in position, presenting the bristles in the reversed direction so that the efficiency of the brush is thereby renewed, and its lift maintained for a very considerableperiod, utilizing the brushes to their fullest possible extent.
The advantages of the brushas thus made will be readily understood and appreciated from the fore oin'g description. It is especially adapted to use with a cushion cleaning machine like that of my Patent No. 1072843 dated September 9, 1913.
It will be understood that the construction of the brush may be changed or varied by the skilled mechanic and adapted to the articular work intended by so proportionlng it as-to its differentparts and dimensions to the work in view. It is comparatively simple and cheap in construction, "While having the several advantages noted, and will be found to accomplish its intended functions in a highly successful manner.
hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a rotatable brush, the combination of a supporting shaft, a supporting base mounted, centrally thereon polygonal in cross section, a plurality of brush housings having base portions abutting againstthe polygonal faces of said base longitudi thereof and secured thereto, each of ing side walls extending outwardly fro base conforming to the side walls o jacent housings and having inwardly turn terminal lips and an endmost wall exten ing outwardly from the base pogtion a; whepeby they maybe ifidividuhllywithdrawn series of individual brushes heying hooks longitudinally of the housings u on movecorresponding in-eross' seetionto-tlx'ehous mentof said-collar,- substantia ly as set ings and fitting snugly therein and .pro; forth.
