Specification of Letters Patent.
rateatea aan it, ieri,
To all'wkom may concern.:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. Mclar- 'rosH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Brush Construction, of which the following is a specification.
The hereinafter described invention relates to improvements in brushes, and more particularly to that type of brush employed in fruit treating apparatus, where it is desired to polish, brush or dry the fruit as the same is conveyed from one machine, apparatus, or point to another, and the invention has for its principal object to provide a rotatable structure which is capable of conveying and brushing the fruit, and which is also adapted for the timing of the fruit to present the stem and blossom ends thereof for polishing, which is not the case with the devices of this character now in use. Another and important object of the invenL tion is to provide a substantially circular brush having 'dat brushing faces and provided with a spirally disposed fruit convey ing bristle portion, the brush being constructed in such manner asto permit the renewal of any face upon the same becoming worn, and without interrupting the continuations of the spiral conveying bristle portion.
With the above mentioned and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the. appended claims; it being understood that various changes in the form, propor tion, size and minor details o f construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any advantages of the inven tion.
To more fully comprehend the invention, reference lshould be had to the accompany ing drawings, wherein for purposes of illustration, li have disclosed brushes of octagonal shape in cross section, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved brushes, arranged in parallel relation to each other and disclosing the spirally disposed bristle portion for conveying the fruit.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken on line 2-2--Fig. l, disclosing the .vals substantially throughout their length are the brush supporting members or cores 5, the peripheral edges of which are formed with straight portions or faces as at 6, of
the same length, and said portions or faces extend at uniform angular" relation from each other, the core thus providing afigure having equal sides, an octagonal igure being disclosed in the drawings.
' Bristle backs 7 extend transversely of the supporting members or cores 5, and are detachably secured thereto by screws 8 or other securing means, and the backs 7 are formed.
with inwardly beveled side edges `9, which permit of a tight joint between the abutting side edges of the backs.
Bristles l0 of any sin'table material are carried by the bristle backs 7 and extend outwardly in a plane at right angles to the faces thereof, and the .outer ends thereof are cut to shape the brushing surface substantially the same as the brush backs.
A spirally arranged tuft of bristles 1l eirtends the full length of the brush backs, and the bristles forming the same project outwardly a. slight distance beyond the ends Y'of the bristles 10, and betwe'n the spiral ll,
the fruit to be polished is received, and is conveyed from one end of the rolls to the other.
rlihe bristles ofthe brushes are in substantially meeting relation for the full length of the brushes, and the bristles at the .rnesting edges A of the bristle backs of one brush are adapted, when the brushes are rotated., to Contact with the bristles-of the brush associated therewith intermediate the meeting edges of the brush backs, as in `Fig. 2, and vice versa. lirorn the above structure it will be apparent that when the fruit is deposited from the chute l2 'between the` rotating brushes, that edges .d of the bristles will contact with the fruit, toss the same about on the bristles so that all the surfaces of the fruit will be presented to the bristles, and the fruit willr travel the length of the brushes and be discharged therefrom through the chute 13. It will also be apparent that by providing the removable bristle backs, that any section of the brushes that becomes worn may be readily replaced, and that by projecting the spiral forming bristles beyond the main polishing or body bristles instead of forming the same by cutting a groove in the polishing or body bristles as is now the custom, that a longer life is insured the bristles.
Having thus described my invention what is claimed as new and is desired to protect by Letters Patent is i l. A cleaning machine comprising a supporting frame, a pair of cleaning brushes rotatably mounted thereon with their sur* faces in parallel meeting relation and providing between them a fruit runway, the bristles of said brushes forming flat sided longitudinally extending circumferentially disposed brush faces of uniform Width throughout their length, the eids of certain of the bristles of each of said brushes projecting beyond the others and forming 'a helical -`conveying rib having Hat faces to correspbnd with said brush faces, means for rotating said brushes to cause the fruit carried between the same to be tossed about to present all surfaces thereof to the brush faces during its travel longitudinally thereof.
2. A cleaning machine comprising a pair of rotatable cleaning brushes disposed in parallel meeting relation and providing between them a fruit runway, each brush comprising a core, a plurality of bristle backs detachably secured to the exterior thereof, bristles carried by said backs and forming with the bristles of the other brush backs flat sided circumferentially disposed brush faces of uniform width throughout their length, and the ends of certain of the bristles of each back projecting beyond the others, and arranged in rows at an angle transversely across the face of the brush backs, and when said backs are in position forming a helical conveying rib for each brush.
3. A cleaning machine comprising a frame,a pair of parallel spaced cleaning brushes rotatably mounted thereon, the bristles of said brushes forming flat 'sided circumferentially disposed brush faces of uniform width throughout theirlength, the ends of certain of the bristles of each of said brushes projecting beyond the others, and forming a helical conveyingrib having fiat faces, the meeting edges of the faces of one brush being disposed to contact with the .said projecting and intermediate faces of the ,opposite brush intermediate the i brushes rotatably mounted thereon, the
bristles of said brushes forming fiat sided circumferentially disposed brush faces of uniform Width throughout their length, the ends of certain of the bristles of each of said brushes vprojecting beyond the others and forming a helical conveying rib having flat faces, the meeting edges of the faces of one brush being disposed to contact with the faces of the opposite brush intermediate the edges thereof, means for rotating said brushes at a uniform speed in opposite directions to cause the fruit carried between the same to be tossed first upwardly onto one brush and then onto'the other )to present all surfaces thereof to the brush faces during its travel longitudinally thereof.
5. A brush for the purpose described comprising a body of non-circular cross-section presenting bristles constituting projecting parts disposed at intervals relative to intermediate parts, in combination with other bristles extending outwardly beyond both parts to constitute a feeding element. y
6. In a machine of the character described, coperating approximately horizontally disposed rotatable brushes associated to form a support and runway for the fruit to be treated, said brushes being of non-circular cross-section presenting relatively projecting parts adapted at intervals to engage and toss the fruit located in said runway,
Aand means for rotating said brushes.
`7. In a machine of the character scribed, coperating approximately horizontally disposed rotatable brushes associated to form a support and runway for the fruit to be treated, said brushes being of non-circular cross-section presenting relatively projecting parts adapted at intervals to engage and toss the fruit located in said runway, and means for rotating said brushes, the projecting parts of the opposite brushes being alternately disposed.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES C. MCNTOSH.
