ycLEAiiiiiefA AND Pci-.isiiiivs MACHINE,
To nall fio/tom it may concern.'
Be it knownthat I, Lno H. ILL-mo, a
of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Cleaning and Polishing Machines, of which the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description. f
This invention 1 relates to cleaning and polishing ymachines Vof that class adapted for cleaning and polishingfknives, forks, spoons and the like, and has particular reference to the `rotary brushes'thereof-which perform the cleaning and ipolishii'ig operation. Brushes of rthis kind are usually of ring like formation, the bristles projecting laterally from the ring; two brushes'are employed in each machine andthey are set with the bristles of onebrush opposing and contacting `with those of the other brush. The brushesare revolved *rapidly and kthe seited between them. y
When sharp knives are operated on by the brushes, it frequently happens ythat the bristles are cut and often one or ythe other of the brushes is destroyed or damaged to such an extent that a new brush must be substituted therefor. The brushes are ysomewhat expensive and the repairs are costly, due to frequentreplacement of the brushes.
The principal' object of this `invention is to minimize the cost of repairs by providing sectional brushes, in the forni of segments which may be removed from and replaced by new ones when worn out or damaged.
Another object is tov compensate for the Wear on the edges of the bristles of any sec-` tion left in the machine when new brush sections are inserted to takey the placeof worn out or' damaged ones.
To such ends the invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the drawing furnished herewith, in which:
` Figure 1, is a view of a cleaning and polishing machine embodying one rform of the present invention, the View being partly in side elevation and partly in central vertical section; F ig. 2, is a view partly in end elevation and partly in vertical cross section, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l, showing one of the brush sections partly broken Specification of Letters Patent.

away and'Fig.` 3, is a perspective view of a e i ybrush section used in the machine. citizen of the United States, anda resident Referring to said drawing, 10, designates a driveishaft mounted in bearing brackets 1l, and carrying a pulley 12, arranged to be driven in any suitable manner as, for instance, byA 'means of a belt running from any suitable sort of power. Mounted upon said shaft are two circular brush carrying heads 13, 13a, the" head 13, being fixedly secured to the 'shaft `by means of a collar 14:,"fast on lthe shaft and having pins 15, whichprojec't intoholes in theweb l6,.of the head. The other head 13a, is slidably mounted on the shaft 10, and" is spring pressedytoward the fixed head 13,by means of a coiled coin-` pression spring 17, interposedy between a collarlS," fast'on the shaft, and the web 19,
of the head, 13a. i
Each brush carrying head is formed with an annular groove 20, betweentwo concen-L that frcrn the web 16, and said groove is adapted for the reception of the back of an annular brush 25. The brush comprises a plurality of segmental sections 24, 24a, the backs 25, of which seat in the groove 20, and have screw threaded pins 26, secured therein, which project out through holes'27, inthe web of the brush carrying head. Said pins are secured in the backs 25, in any suitable manner and they are here shown as provided with nuts 28, that are let into recesses in the sectional brush backs, and when screwed up tight against the backs, rigidly fasten the screw threaded pinsto the back. Nuts 29, are threaded upon the outer ends of the screw threaded .pins 26, and bear against the outer face of the web 16, to se-V Patented Nov. 16, l1915...' Application filed August 21,1913." Sera110.`785,841. l l' project laterallyV ice natedv by the reference numeral'ia, is 'one Whose bristles are shorter than the bristles of those shovvn in? the other sections, such as would be the'case if they had been Worn down 'from considerable usage, and the other Vthree Worn out sections hadibeen replaced Washers may be of different thicknesses so as to properlyback up the-brush section. e having the short length bristles., and thereby .bringA the ends of the bristles, or rather the Workingrface of the section, flush With the Workingface of thebristlesof the other sections. These Washers may surround the screw threaded pins 26, if so desired, and by tightening up` the-'nuts on thel pins'this VVbrushsection:may be properly secured in place, With its Working racecontacting With the Workingy face of theopposite brush section. A N v In use, the shaft and brush heads and brushescarried thereby, are revolved, and if desired, cleaning and polishing powdersmay be applied to the brushes, vafter which the article to be cleaned is inserted between the contacting faces of the brushes and held there until the cleaningand polishing operation hasbeenperform'ed. y I Yrealize thatY various Valterations and vmodifications of this device are possibile without departingv from the spirit of this inf vention and I do not therefore desire to limit'myself to the exact details of construction shown and'described.- l,
I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent: Y
In, a cleaning and polishing machine, a
rotary, disk-like, brush-carrying head, 'and Yan'annularV brush having a back piece and bristles secured therein and projecting therefrom in linessubstantially parallel with the axis of rotation of said head, one of said members havingstuds iXedly secured thereto andprojecting therefromin lines vparallel With said axis of Vrotation- V andv the V`other member having-holes for/the reeption of said st uds whereby rotation of one; member with respect to theother is prevented.
