To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIELl/V. Gaan of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper- ,Fasteners, of which the following is a specification. n Y

This invention relatesto an implement or machine for fastening sheets of paper securely together by meansk of apart of the paper itself, and without requiring the use of additional means such asmetallic.y clips, eyelets, or the like.

My object is to provide a simple machine or device in the form of an implement which can be held and operated in one hand, and is capable in one operation, during which its moving parts or jaws close together and separate, of vcutting a tongue from the material of two or more sheets ofpaper and of drawing said tongue through the sheets.

In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one possible embodiment of an implement designed and capable of carrying the objects of my invention into effect. y

Figure 1 represents a sectional viewof the implement in open position. Fig. 2 is a similar yview,showing the implement in closed position. Fig. 3 is a view showing the ycharacter of work performed by the imple- '-ment, the same representing two ysheets of paper after having been acted upon, showing a tongue cut from one partk of the sheets and tucked through a slit formed in an adjacent part of the sheets.y Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the fastening taken on line L -1 of Fig. 3.

One rconcrete form in which I have emillustration, and is hereinafter described in detail for the same purpose, but notof limitation, as I desire it to be understood that the principles ofthe invention maybe embodied in many other forms and used in many other ways than herein shown, withoutlosing its spirit or essence. tively. On the jaw 6 is formed a die 8, with which cooperates a punchQ kon the other jaw. The cutting edges on the end of the punch next to the jaw 6 have thek formV in general of the letter U, and the die is so shaped as 7. to admit the punch, embracing its U-formed edges closely,` but being open on the side of the punch opposite to the bottom of the` U, so that the punch may cut out a tongue which is integrally united at one end of the f paper, instead of being severed therefrom. To express the idea in other words it may be said that the die has a cutting edge 10, which cooperates with the edge orcorner 11 of the punch to form the bottom of the U, and thetwo side edges 12 coperate with the side edges 13 of the punch to form the legsr or sides of the U-shaped tongue. When the sheets of paper represented at 141 are laid on the jaw 6 and the jawsr are pressed together, the punch passes into the die, severing three sides of the tongue from the body of the paper and bending up the tongue about the neck whereon it is joined with the body of the paper. In orderthat this action may take place the die is formed as a slot 15 in the jaw 6, of greater length than the punch, one end and the sides of which slot form shearing edges complemental to the edges of the punch. Also carried by the jaw 7 and projecting therefrom in a direction generally parallel to the punch is a piercing device 16 which passes through the slot 15 near the opposite end thereof from the cutting edge 10 and lforms a narrow slot in the f paper. Secured to the jaw 6 is a spring guard 17 having an opening 18 to permit the punchto pass through it, and a second Aopening19 .to receive the piercer. At the end of the opening 18 the guard has a crossbar 20. The-spring guard is secured to the Alatter have passed through the paper and when the jaws are separated. The hook 30 also acts as a stop to preventtoo wide separation of the jaws when the implementis open. l
