To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVeiser, in the county of Washington and State of Idaho, have invented a new and useful Gripper, Perforator, and Creaser, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to printing press grippers, and aims to provide a novel and'improved device of that nature, embodying interchangeable perforating, creasing and cutting blades.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a gripper for printing presses, of unique construction, and which may have combined or assembled therewith, a perforator, creaser or cutter.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a gripper of the character specified, embodying a peculiar assemblage of the component parts, whereby the device will be of simple, light, substantial and inexpensive construction, as well as being simple, convenient, serviceable, practical and efficient in its use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

In carrying out the present invention, there is provided an elongated sheath 1, in eluding the base or bottom 2, and the sides 3 having the inturned flexible or resilient lips 4 provided with a slot 5 therebetween. The case or bottom 2 and the sides 3 of the sheath are tapered from one end to the other, whereby the sheath as a whole is tapered from one end to the other. The bottom or body portion 2 of the sheath is provided at its butt end with a tongue or flap 6, which is flexible, and which has an angular lip or flange 7 at its free end. The sheath is preferably fashioned or stamped from sheet metal of suitable character.
Employed in connection with the sheath 1, is a clamp, preferably bent from a bar or other suitable length of stock, and compris ing a pair of juxtaposed or parallel elongated jaws 8 having a loop 9 at their butt ends. The jaws 8 are tapered from the loops 9 to their ends whereby the jaws and sheath will be tapered to correspond with one another.
The perforator embodies an elongated tapered blade 10 having a series of sharpened perforating teeth 11 along one edge, while the creaser and cutter, each embody a tapered blade 10 having an unbroken or continuous active edge 11. The active edge 11"of the creaser, is blunt or unsharpened, while the active edge of the cutter is sharpened, this being the only distinction between the creaser and cutter.
In practice, the clamp, which forms the frame of the device, is adapted to be secured to the platen frame of a printing press, by means of a bolt engaged through the loop 9 of the clamp, whereby the jaws 8 will be dis posed properly over the platen, and will be free. To apply the perforator and sheath to the clamp, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the perforator blade 10 has its inactive edge portion disposed between the jaws 8 of the clamp, and the sheath 1 is inserted longitudinally over the jaws 8, so that the teeth 11 of the perforator are disposed between the lips a of the sheath and project away from the jaws. Then, by sliding or forcing the sheath home, the perforator will be tightly gripped or clamped between the clamp jaws, and the lip or flange 7 of the sheath tongue 6 will snap over the loop 9 of the clamp, to retain the sheath in place. The sheath being tapered, as well as the clamp jaws, will cause the said jaws to be pressed together, as the sheath is slid home, to thereby firmly hold the perforator in place with its active edge free. The flexible or yieldable gripping lips a extend along the sides of the blade 10 and project toward the free ends of the perforat: ing teeth 11 to ordinarily protect the same, and to permit the lips a to yield when pressure is given to bear thereon. In a like manner, the creaser or cutter may be applied to the clamp, with the sheath, as will be readily apparent.
When the present device is applied to the platen frame, the same will serve as an ordinary gripper, and supposing the perforator to be employed, the same will be arranged to work between the type or type rules in the form, when an impression is made. Thus, pressure being brought to bear upon the sheath, will fleX the lips 4: toward the jaws 8, thereby causing the perforating teeth to be projected beyond the lips of the sheath, and consequently, the perforator will be brought into operation for perforating the paper or other stock which is being printed upon. It is of course understood, that prior to the printing operation, the present device is properly set or adjusted upon the platen by impression, as is well understood. The gripping lips :i also facilitate the gripping function, and will limit the insertion of the perforating teeth into or through the stock, the flexing action of the lips 4 being limited by the clamp jaws 8 as will be apparent by reference to Fig. 2. Instead of the perforator being the full length of the sheath and clamp, the same may be constructed of short lengths or blades 10, as seen in Fig. 8, having the perforating teeth 11. The several blades 10, 10 and 10 are interchangeable, and may be readily applied to and removed from the clamp and sheath. Thus, when the sheath is j withdrawn longitudinally out of engagement with the clamp, theflange 7 of the tongue 6 disengaging the loop 9, the blade will be released, and may be readily replaced by one of the other blades. If the sectional perforator is employed, the sections or lengths 10 thereof may be spaced at various distances apart, according to the nature of work to be done, or, a single section or length 10 may be employed alone to provide a short series of perforations. If the blade 10 is employed having a blunt active edge 11, the same will serve to crease the material, while if the blade 10 has a sharp edge, the same will serve to cut a slit in the paper. The creaser may also be employed for scoring cards or heavy stock. Attention is also directed to the fact that the bottom and sides as an ordinary gripper.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawing, the advantages and capabilities of the present device will be apparent to those familiar in the art to which the present invention relates, it being noted that the device as herein disclosed, is in accord with the objects aimed at. 7
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the character described, a clamp embodying a pair of elongated jaws, a blade disposed therebetween, and a sheath slipped longitudinally over the jaws and comprising a body portion having sides, the sides having lips projecting toward each other to provide a slot therebetween, the
blade passing through the said slot, the
sides of the sheath engaging the jaws to clamp the blade therebetween, and the jaws being held snugly between the said lips and body portion of the sheath.
2. In a device of the character described, a pair of elongated jaws having a loop at one end, the jaws being tapered from the loop to their other ends, a blade disposed be tween the jaws, and a sheath embracing the jaws and having a slot for the passage of the blade, the sheath being tapered from one end to the other corresponding to the jaws.
3. In a device of the character described, a pair of elongated jaws having a loop at one end, a blade disposed between the jaws, and means engageable longitudinally with the said jaws to clamp the blade therebetween and having retaining means engageable over the said loop.
4. In a device of the character described, a pair of elongated jaws having a loop at one end, a blade disposed between the jaws, and a sheath embracing the jaws and having a slot for the passage of the blade, the sheath having a resilient retaining member arranged to snap over the said loop.
5. In a device of the character described, a pair of elongated jaws having a loop at one end, and a sheath arranged to he slipped longitudinally over the jaws and having a longitudinal slot, and a flexible tongue at one end to project over. one side of the said loop, the tongue having an angular flange at its free end to snap over the loop.
6. In a device of the-character described,
a clamp, a blade received by the clamp with one edge projecting therefrom, and a member carried by the clamp and having flexible lips along the sides of and projecting toward the said edge of the blade.
7. In a device of the character described, a clamp, a blade received thereby with one edge projecting therefrom, and a sheath embracing the clamp and having flexible lips along the sides of and projecting toward the said edge of the blade.
8. In a device of the character described, a clamp embodying a pair of elongated jaws, and a sheath arranged to be slipped over the jaws and comprising a body portion having sides, the sides having flexible angular lips projecting toward each other and having a slot therebetween.
9. In a device of the character described, a clamp embodying elongated aWs having a loop at one end, and a sheath arranged to be slipped over the said jaws, the sheath having a longitudinal slot and flexible lips adjoining the slot, and the sheath having flexible retaining means at one end to snap over the said loop.
