Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1915.
Application led December 8, 1914. Serial No. 876,080. I
Be it known that I, GEORGE TKACH, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Hastings-upon-Hudson, in the county of Westchester and State of New' York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification..
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in knife Sharpeners.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a sharpening device for the cutting blades of knives andv similar devices after the manner of a small grind stone adapted to be secured to an upright support and being normally ready for immediate use.
A further object is to provide a sharpening wheel mounted to revolve Within a wall mounted casing furnished with. a de-l sired quantity of a moistening liquid and having a hinged lclosure adapted for holding the blades and for resiliently contacting the same against the wheel during the activeoperation of the device.
A still further object is to provide a two part casing within which a grinding wheel is journaled, said wheel being geared for rapid revolution and one portion of the wheel being provided with alining slots for receiving the blade to be operated upon transversely of the casing while resilient means are provided for forcing the blade against 'the wheel.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part ofthis application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding 4parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevation ofV the device partially broken away and with a knife operatively positioned therein. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with a portion of the knife bladeted lines in its open position, and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the cover portion of the casing partially broken away.
Referring more in detail to the drawings there is'provided a substantially cylindrical casing consisting of a bottom half or-por.- tion 10 and a top half or cover 11 hinged together as at 12 upon a verticallypositioned base-board 40. sharpening wheel 13 formed of emery carborundum or other similar material has an axle 14 journaled in the said casing, the upper portion 11 having central side grooves 15 for journaling the same while Cotter pins 16 are secured through the axle at each side of the wheeli for removably retaining the wheel upon the central squared portion -17 of ythe axle.
The wheel being so journaled within the casing, the lower portion 10 is adapted to hold a quantity of liuid such as water v18 which may be drawn olf through the drip cock 19 and the quantity thereof regulated as may be desired. The axle 14 has a projecting end 2O exteriorly-of the casing provided with a gear 21 which is in constant mesh with the larger gear 22 journaled upon a stub shaft 23 carried by the casing beneath the axle end 20 while a third shaft 24 is positioned beneath the axle 23 and has a gear 25 thereon in constant mesh with the aforementioned gear 22. A turn crank 26 is secured to the free end of the shaft 24 and whereby the gear 25 may be turned for operating the other gears and thus revolvingthe wheel -13 with added rapidity. A side case 27 is secured to the casing 10 for inclosing all of the said gears.
The top portion 11 of the casing has a rearlug 28 upon the top thereof which is adapted to engage the base 40 when the said top is closed and a turn button 29 is pivoted tothe base 40 and is positionable against the lug 28 for retaining the top in its` closed position.
Tapered side slots 30 are provided in alinement with each other through the opposite sides of the top 11 and through which transversely of the top a knife blade `such as 31 is adapted to be positioned, the same being in contact with the grinding periphery of the, wheel 13 when such blade is held adjacent the pointed ends 32 of the slots. Two pairs of such slots are illustrated in Fig. 4: in connection with the device although it A grinding and is evident that only one pair is necessary although a larger number may be employed if desired. A broad leaf spring 33 is provided for each pair of slots being positioned between the side Walls of the top l1 secured at one end to a rod 34 rigidly carried by the said top. Upon the insertion of a knife through the slots the upper side of the blade will be positioned against the lower face of the spring 33, Which spring will thereupon resiliently hold the` blade with the edge portion thereof in contact With the grinding periphery of the wheel.
|The complete operation of the device will be at once apparent from this description thereof. By releasing the button 29 and opening the top 11 of the casing, Water or other' liquid may be placed in the bottom portion l0 of the casing and the top then closed and secured in position. A knife blade is readily insertible through either pair of side slots 30 and being .pressed against the periphery of the wheel 13 by the contacting spring, the crank 26 may be turned by hand thereby rapidly revolving' lar devices is provided and one Which may be rigidly secured to any desired support. While the form of the invention 'herein matassa nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the form, proportion and details of construction Without departing from the spirit and scope of the nvention as set forth in the appended claim.
What is claimed as neWis A device of the class described comprising a semi-cylindrical Water receiving casing, a similar casing hinged to the top thereof and having tapered alining blade recelving slots through its opposite sides, a grinding Wheel having its axlecentrally j ournaled through the said casings and having its periphery in the same plane as the pointed ends of said slots, gearing operatively connected to the said axle, a case for the said gearing, a transverse rod fixed Within said hinged casing above the larger ends of the said slots, a leaf spring having one end thereof rigidly secured to the said rod and 'curvingly extending transversely of the plane of the said slots and closure retaining means for the said hinged casing.
ln testimony whereof ll aiiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.' l
