To aZZ 20.720711 it may; concern Be it known that I., CHARLES H. BOARD- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus.' in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements inf Machines for Mining Coal, of whichthe followingr is Mv invention relates to machines for mining coal, of. the type which act to undercut the mineral at the end of a heading, or any other'nall of passage or chamber in a mine. v
The invention particularly relatesto a portable machine 'provided with spaced apart cutting; mechanisms. cutting to relatively different depths. and having means for removing the material between them as it is cut. l
Attempts have been made to utilize machines which have had onlv a single cutting 'mechanismso located with respect tothe frame ot the machine that when the said machine is placedon the door oft' a mine. and brought up to the wall from which the mineral is to be cut a narrow slit extendingr horizontalljT into the Wall near the tloor will be made. Finch machines are unsatisfactorv in their operation. because the slits produced. as above described. are so shallow that when the supernosed mineral is broken the mineral is down bv .r'edgini oYA blast not broken into suiiioientlv small lumps for' convenient and'practical loadina and han; dline. except bv emplovrnent ot an excessivelv large charge of explosive., but is loosened as a large mass oi. nerhaps. several 'tons in weight. which must be subseouentlv shot or picked to' pieces. Another mode of .getting convenient sized pieces with a shallow undercut. is bv making lieavv blast and 4breaking the mass oi" coal bv the force of the blast butL this isiivasteiiul of explosive, and has the additional disa dvant'aoe ot shatteringT the' coal too much. with production of too large a proportion of dust.
Mv invention aims to overcome the 'obiections above indicated. bf providing a'noa chine for malrine a deep undercut. which is simple and easily operated.' and in which there are spaced apart cutting; mechanisms. each equipped with a series `ot' cutters or disks. said cutting' mechanisms being located one above tbe otherR With clear space hctwee'n, to the end that the' machine ma;7

Patented Mar. om, applicati@ inea March 24,1914. seriarNo. 826,963. l I I make tivo separated' cuts simultaneousljv.E andat the lsame time remove the mineral between the cuts. The lower cutting mech` anism is arranged to out into the Wall to e greater depth than lthe upper cutting'mechyamsm, Wherebv-When the cutting action has.
been completed. a deep undercut is produced having an overhanoing Wedge shaped portion at the rear. Thus a considerable die tance is provided through 'which the mineral above the-undercut'rnafv fall.l andynhen said mineral is brought down bv anv of the coin-v Amonlv practised methods. it fulcriims upon the overhanging wedge shaped portion ot the cut so as to roll about the same.v causing it to be broken into lumps of convenient size for handling when it strikes the bottom..l

The arm l1 is shorter than tbe arm 19;. thc I arrangement beinel such that the iov-Ward end ot the lower arm extends bevond the forward end'ot the upper arm.
