HERMIT \V. RYDER, OF MOUNTAIN GROVE, VIRGINIA.
RAIL-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1915.
Application filed March 21, 1914. Serial No. 826,318.
To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HnnMrr W. RYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mountain Grove, in the county of Bath and State of Virginia, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rail joints in which the primary object is to eliminate the use of boltsffish-plates, etc., for securing the proximate ends of the rails.
Another object of the invention resides in the peculiar formation of the meeting ends of the rails by which one serves as a brace for the other whereby lateral displacement of the rails is prevented.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rail embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the rail ends, and
Fig. l 1s a perspective view of the opposite end showing to advantage the end which engages with the rail shown in Fig. 3.
In the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention, a pair of rails 5 and 6 are provided, the former of which has portions of the web cut out as indicated'at 7 and shown to advantage in Fig. 3, spaced parallel longitudinally extending arms 8 being provided by extending a portion of the web subjacent the cut-out portion 7 and integrally forming the same with the base flange 9. The portions 10 of the inner terminals of the cut-out portions 7 form shoulders for a purpose which Will subsequently appear. The opposite rail 6 has spaced parallel longitudinally extending arms 11 associated therewith, which are formed by extending portions of the web of the rail directly beneath the head of the rail, the upper margins of the arms 11 being enlarged as indicated at 12, adapted to snugly engage beneath the head of the rail 5, the free ends of the arms 11 engaging with the shoulders 10. A portion of each side of the web of the rail 6 is cut-out as shown at 13 in Fig. 4: with which the arms 8 are engaged, the inner terminals of the cut-out portions as indicated at 13 providing shoulders 14 with which the free ends of the arms 8 abut.
In operation, the arms 11 of the rails 6 are slidably engaged with the upper marginal edges of the arms 8 directly beneath the head of the rail 5 until the free ends of the arms 11 abut against the shoulders 10. In this position, as shown to advantage in Fig. 2, the enlarged upper margins 12 of the arms 11 lie directly beneath the head of the rail 5 as previously pointed out and in the plane with the opposite sides of the latter so as to eliminate any danger of the wheel flange of the rolling stock which passes over the rail from coming in contact therewith,
even if the wheels were to leave the track. In this position it is seen that the arms 8 lie directly beneath the arms 11 and are engaged with the opposite sides of the web on the rail 6, thereby providing a brace for the arms 11, while the latter provide braces in the same manner for the arms 8, so as to prevent lateral displacement of the rails even should undue pressure be exerted on the sides thereof in rounding sharp curves.
It is to be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts, may be made within the scope of the appended claim and Without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A rail joint including a pair of rails one of which has a portion of its web directly below the head, extended beyond one end to provide spaced longitudinally extending parallel arms for engagement in complementary cut-out portions in the endof the opposite rail, said arms having the upper In testimony whereof I afiix my signature margins enlarged iior 1fsnug engageminlllt with in presence of two Witnesses.
the head of the rai t e opposite rai avin arms integrally formed with the base flnngi a HERMIT RYDERi 5 and extending beyond the end of the rail Witnesses:
vwhereby one rail braces the other against J. R. CRIsER,
lateral displacement. I C. A. GENN.
