T0 all whom it may conce/'n Be it known that we, Josnrrr ToMAssi and ZDzisLAw LonoDzrNsKr, subjects of the Emperor of Russia, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Foldable Cots, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to cots which are foldable for convenience in transportation and storage, and the object of the invention is to provide a cot of this kind which is strong and durable, and one which is comfortable when set up ready 'for use.
The invention also has for its object to provide a novel and improved construction and arrangement of parts to permit folding of the cot into small and compact form` t0- gether with improved means for securely holding the cot in set-up position, and for stretching and holding taut the cover of the cot.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accomF panying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an inverted plan view of one end of the cot; Fig. 2 is an end view oi' the cot; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 8-3 ot' Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail showing the hinge connection between the leg brace-members.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the cot comprises a canvas or other fabric cover lO extending between parallel side rails 13 supported on legs 14. The cover 10 extends between the side rails, its longitudinal end portions being carried around to come down beneath the same. A substantial fabric strip 29 is located between the aforesaid end portions of the cover, and is connected thereto by a lacing 30.
The members of each pair of legs at the respective ends of the cot are connected by a foldable brace comprising two pivotally connected members 3l. which are hinged at their outer ends to the legs, as indicated at One of the brace members is composed of a metal strip 33 faced on both sides with wooden strips 34. At the inner end of the member, the strip 33 projects from the strips 34 and is enlarged into circular form, as indicated at 35, said enlargement having a toothed edge at 36. The other member is composed 'of a pair of metal strips 37 located between wooden facing strips 38. rl`he strips 37 are spaced apart by spacers 39, and

they project from the strips 33, the projecting portions being circular, as indicated at 40, and the part 35 fitting therebetween. A. pivot pin 4l passes through the parts 35 and 40. Between the projecting parts 40 is pivoted a pawl 42, whio i latter is located to engage the toothed edge 33, and thus lock the two brace members in adjusted position.
Between each leg 14 aud the brace member 3l which is hinged thereto, is a connection for swinging or tilting the leg outward to draw the cover l0 taut. This connection comprises an arm 43 secured to the leg, an secured to the brace member, and a link 45 connecting these arms, said link being pivotally connected to the extremities of the arms, as indicated at 46. The arms and the link therebetween extend transversely between the leg and the brace member. The outer end of the arm 43 has an offset 47 to accommodate a spring 48'which is coiled around the pivot connecting said arm and the link, one end of the spring being connected to the arm and the other end to the link. The arm 44 is secured to the brace member by a pin 49 carried by a strap 50, and adapted to enter a selected one of a series of holes 5l in the arm, a series of holes being provided to permit adjustment.
When the cot is first set up, the legs 14 diverge as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the brace members 31 being opened out or spread as far as the cover l0 will allow. The legs must now be brought to perpendicular position, the cover being drawn taut at the same time. This is done by folding the parts 43, 44 and 45 so that they come into position alongside each other, whereby the legs are drawn inward to perpendicular position. The legs swing on the hinges 32, and their upper ends, with the side bars of the cot, swing outward, thereby drawing the cover taut. A stop 52 on the leg is engaged by the arm 44 and link 45 whereby the latter are held in horizontal position. Before the parts 43, 44 and 45 are folded as stated, they are in longitudinal alinement, and by folding them, the connection between the leg and the brace member is shortened, thereby swinging or tilting the leg as described. YV hen the parts 43, 44 and 45 are in folded position, their pivotal connections 46 are in horizontal alinement, and the spring 48 tends to hold the parts in this position so that they are prevented from accidentally unfolding.
arm 44 We claim: A
1. A foldable cot comprising side rails, a flexible 'top Ycarried by the side rails and eX- tending therebetween, legs on which the side rails are mounted, pivotally connected brace members between the legs at the respective ends ofthe cot, a hinge connection between said legs and the brace members, a contractile connection between the legs and the correspondingV brace member, said connection comprising arms extending from the legsY and the vbrace member, respectivelyand secured thereto, and a link connection between the arms.
2. A foldable cot comprising side rails, a flexible top carried by the Side rails and eX- tending therebetween, legs on which the side rails are mounted, pivotally connected brace members between the legs at the respective `ends of lthe cot, a hinge connection between said legs and the brace members, a Aoon- 4tractile connection between the legs and the corresponding brace member, said connection comprising arms extending from the Y legs and the brace member, anda link connection between the arms, one of said arms being adjustable lengthwise. Y
3. VA foldable cot comprising side rails, a
ienible top Vcarried by the side rails and eX- `tending therebetween, legs on which the side rails are mounted, pivotally connected brace members between the legs at the respective ends of the cot, a hinge connection between said legs and the brace members, a oontractile connection 'between the *legs and the corresponding 'brace membeig and means for locking'the brace members together, saidv locking means comprising apawl carriedv byl 'one of the members, the other member having a'circular ltoothed enlargement at the pivotwhich is engageable by the p'awl. y
