To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, FERDINAND CEOE-IAL,

a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Saratoga Sprin s, in the county of Saratoga and State of i ew York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toilet-Seats, of which the following is a speciiicat'ipn.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in toilet seats, and yhas particular reference to that type which consists of a plurality of superposed layers of paper or other suitable material which are secured together in the form of a pad and mounted upon the wooden seat of the toilet, and resides in novel means for securing the pad in operative position to the seat.

An important object of my invention is to provide a seat of the above mentioned character designed to prevent the spread of disease.

A further important object of my invention'is to provide a device of the above mentioned character constructed of few parts,

ready applicable to toilet seats, and cheap to manufacture.

The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claim which is appended hereto and formsppart of this application.

With reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device in assembled operative position. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the seat. Fig. 4c is a detail perspective view of the plates for securing the pad tc the seat.

In the drawing forming a part of this specification, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety a bowl of a toilet provided with the usual laterally extending Bange 2 and wooden seat 3.

The seat or pad forming a part of my invention is composed of a plurality of superposed layers or sheets 4 formed of paper Specieation of Letters Patent.

or any'other suitable material and adapted to conform to the shape of the wooden seat 3 and gummed upon opposite sides, as indicated at 5 and 6 and secured together at their rear edges in any suitable manner. A suitable backing 6 formed of pasteboard or any othersuitable stil' material is secured in any suitable manner to the sheets 4 and -is adapted to .be interposed between the sheets and the upper surface of the seat 3.

Each of the sheets of the pad 4 is perforated transversely .adjacent its rear terminal, ,as

indicated at 7, to provide for tearing oi each 'ofthe sheets afterhaving been used. As a means for securing the pad 4 to the wooden seat 3, this invention employs a vertically disposed rectangular plate 8 which is secured adjacent its lower longitudinal edge in any suitable manner to the rear edge of the wooden seat 3 and is provided upon its upper longitudinal edge with a plurality of spaced ears 9, and further provided upon its rear side with a pair of spaced angularly disposed ears 10 which extend above the ears 9 and diverge upwardly therefrom. A second rectangular plate i1 normally disposed in a horizontal plane' with relation to the plate 8, is provided with a plurality of spaced ears 12 adjacent its rear longitudinal edge, which are adapted to have hinged enn gagement with the ears 9 on the plate 8 to provide for the movement of the plate 11 relatively with the plate 8 in order to facilitate the insertion o the rear edge of the pad 4 between the plate 11 and upper surface of the seat 3. As a means 'for locking the plate 11 in clamping engagement with the pad 4, this invention employs a pair or hooks 13 secured to opposite side edges of the seat 1 and which are adapted to have engagement with pins 14: formed upon the ends of the plate 11.

A pair of spaced curved supporting arms 15 are bolted or otherwise suitably secured to the flange 2 `upon the bowl 1 and are adapted to have hinged engagement at their free terminals with the two pairs of ears 10 and 16 respectively secured to the rear edge of the wooden lid or cover 17, as will be clearly seen with reference to Fig. 2. It will thus be seen that a hinged connection for the plates 11 and 8 and the sheet 3 is provided whereby the plates and seat with a pad secured thereon may be lifted upwardly away from the fiange 2 upon the bowl 1.

It is apparent that after the seat has been used the top sheet may be torn from the ,gummed portions 5 andA 6 and at the perforated line 7 whereby a new and clean seat is afforded by the next sheet in the pad.

When it is desired to remove the pad after all the sheets therein have been used, the hooks 13 are moved out of engagement with the pins 14 and the plate 1l is free from clamping engagement with that portion of the pad which engages when in operative position, and a new pad may be secured to the seat 3 after the manner hereinbefore described.

In reductionI to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eicient and practical; yet, realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that said vertical plate, a hook secured to said various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, Without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claim.

. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is:

The combination with a wooden seat of a toilet, of a pad adapted to be secured thereto, a vertical plate secured to the rear edge i of said wooden seat, a clamping plate j! hingedly secured to the upper terminal of jl wooden seat and adapted for engagement Ll0 with said clamping plate, a pair of spaced lugs formed on said vertical plate, and a pair of spaced arms having hinged engagement with said ears.
