Description
about hm am y om DUNCAN MCMILLAN AND Annan Rowan, or WEBSTER "curr, Iowa.
` Letters Patent No. 112.947, dated nath 21, 1871.
' IMPRovi-:ME-NT'IN BUCKLES.
'fte seheame reagents-in thse Lem :eac-ene mie making vpan; .of the me.
To all whom it 'may concerti Be it `known that we, DUNCAN M OMILLAN and ABBAM ROWAN, of Webster Oty,in the county of Hamilton'and State of Iowa, have invented certain ew and useful Improvements in Buckles; and we vdo hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear,
and exact' description thereof, reference being had .to the acompa-nying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this ly indicated -by a reference tothe drawing, and gthe same consists in the novel arrangement and combination, as well as construction-of parts, whereby a simple, cheap, and effective buckle isl made adapted to all of the ordinary uses 'of the buckle, and which requires no troublesome or expensive or external meansl of fastening the strap to the same.
A'represents the body or frame of our improved buckle, and. is made, as shown, with four sides, and with a stirrup or loop, @aand is provided Withadiaphragm, (l, uponone end of which is formed the hook or projection shown in fig., 3. y Y
The diaphragm, or rather the space between it and the bottom of the body A, forms or provides a loop for one end oi' thestrap B, which, when passed through the body and over the projection d of the diap'hragnn, and then into the loop,.as above, becomes.''securely'v fastened thereto, the projection, of course, passing through a suitable hole inthe' strap.
In the top of the body' A-is pivoted the tongue or latch @which is provided with the stud b, which operates as the tongue of the buckle.
A fspring, g, 1s arranged as shown, so as to hold tongue open or closed, as desired.` When the tongue isopened, it is .held openby the spring until the strap is adj usted to the requiredlngth, and when the same is closed, it is held securelyy in place against any dan.-v ger of displacement by accident.
The stirrup or loop a gives a length ofibearing and `braces theI body without adding materially to the weight ofthe buckle.-
It should be observed. tha'tthe spring not only serves as such, but also as a brace to support the tongue C '11, the part b resting against the-end of the .spring when down Ain place, to hold'the strap' .against strains.
The spring, though elastic literally, has great lon gitu# dinal strength and readily subserves the two purposes. A much stronger buckle of the same weight and dimensions may be made than byl any other arrangement of devices known'to us.. y
Having'thus fully described our invention,
What we claim as 'new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described buckle, consistingof body A, diaphragm d, loop a, tongue U b, and spring quail-ar ranged' and operating substantially as set forth.
In testimony lthat we claim the foregoing as our .own we afdx'our signatures in presence of two witnesses. A
' DUNCAN MoMILLAhL Witnessesz' ABRAM ROWAN. f
