MOLDING-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED V. MAGNUSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berwyn, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Molding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in molding machines and has for its object to provide a new and improved molding machine of this description.
Theinvention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing whereinFigure 1 is a vertical sectional view with parts broken away showing a molding machine embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several figures.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, the machine is provided with a base 1, provided with an upwardly projecting guiding part 2. A non-metallic stop piece or ring 3 of fiber or other suitable material is associated with the guiding part 2, and as shown in the drawing, rests upon a shoulder or supporting ledge 1-. A movable table 5 is provided upon which the mold or flask is placed. This table has a downwardly projecting guiding part 6 which engages the guiding part 2. Some means is provided for oscillating the table 5 so as to jar the sand in the mold and cause it to pack about the pattern. As herein shown, a rotating shaft 7 is provided with a cam 8 which engages a roller 9 attached to one end of a bell crank lever 10. The other end of said bell crank lever is pivoted to a link 11 which is attached to a pin 12 removably connected with the table 5 by means of a nut 18. The parts are arranged so that when the shaft 7 is rotated, the table will be lifted up a certain distance, and when the roller 9 passes off of the high part of the cam, the table will drop of its own weight. The guiding part 6 is provided with a shoulder 14 which strikes the non-metallic stop piece 3 so as to suddenly stop the table and the mold thereby causing the sand to pack. This operation is repeated at a rapid rate until the sand is sufliciently packed about the pattern. The guiding part 6 has a downwardly projecting inclosing or protecting part 15 which projects beyond the non-metallic stop piece 3 and which preferably engages said stop Specification of Letters Patent.

piece so as to confine it and prevent it from being expanded laterally due to the blows of the shoulder 14. This protecting part is preferably of such length that it does not pass above the non-metallic stop piece 3 when the table is lifted to its highest position. The non-metallic or fiber stop piece 3 is subjected to very rapid heavy blows given it and it soon wears out. The protecting device prevents it from expanding under these blows and thus greatly lengthens its life. Another important feature of this protecting device 15 is that it prevents sand, dirt, hot iron or other foreign substances from getting on top of the stop piece 3. The conditions and use of the machine make it im possible to keep these foreign substances from getting on top of the ring unless some protecting device is provided. When this foreign substance gets on top of the ring, the table is tilted so as to unduly increase the power required to operate the device, and in addition, this tilting causes the mold to move across the table so that it is liable to be thrown off entirely. By means of the present invention, these difliculties are obviated and a practical commercial jarring machine,
provided.
In the construction illustrated, the parts 2 and 1 1 are annular and the stop piece 3 is in the form of a ring. The table 5 is provided with strengthening ribs 16 which are connected to the outer edge of the table and to the part 6 and to the part 15. These ribs take the strain placed upon the part 15 so as to prevent it from being broken OK.
I claim:
1. A molding machine comprising a base, an upwardly projecting stationary cylindrical guide, an annular shoulder associated with said guide, a separate stop piece surrounding the guide and engaging said shoulder, a movable table, a downwardly projecting cylindrical movable guide connected with the table and surrounding the stationary guide, a shoulder on said movable guide adapted to engage the stop piece when the table is in its maximum down position, means for rapidly moving said table up and down to cause the shoulder on the movable guide to strike the stop piece and suddenly stop the table at predetermined intervals, and an annular protecting piece connected with the movable guide and extending below said stop piece.
2. A molding machine comprising a base, an upwardly projecting stationary cylindrical guide, an annular shoulder associated with said guide, a separate stop piece surrounding the guide and engaging said shoulder, a movable table, a downwardly projecting cylindrical movable guide connected with the table and surrounding the stationary guide, a shoulder on said movable guide adapted to engage the stop piece when the table .is in its 'maX-imum down position, means for rapidly moving said table up and doWn to cause the shoulder on the movable guide to strike the stop piece and suddenly stop the table at predetermined intervals, an annular protecting piece connected with the movable guide and extending below said stop piece, and a series of strengthening ribs connected with the outer edge of said table and with said movable guide and annular protecting piece.
