RAILROAD-Tin.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
Application filed March 9, 1914. Serial 1\To.'823,568.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in railroad ties and has for its principal object the provision of @1316 which will prevent the rail from spreading, sinking, or creeping.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a tie in which the resilient qualities of the old type of wood tie are retained and combined with the advantages which are present in the use of a metallic tie.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective means for securing the rail in place on the tie and preventing the same from becoming displaced.
lVith the above and other obJects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of a railroad tie constructed in accordance with this invention showing the rails in position thereon and in section, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a railroad tie constructed in accordance with this invention showing the same with the rails removed, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail View of the rail securing means.
Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety a railroad tie constructed in accordance with this invention to which the rails indicated generally by the numeral 2 are secured.
The railroad tie, referred to by the numeral 1, comprises the vertical body portion 3 having formed along one edge the flanges 4-. Each of these flanges 4% is provided with the apertures 5, the use of which will be more fully hereinafter described. The edge of the body portion 3 opposite the flanges t is preferably curved as clearly shown in Fig. 1 and is provided with the oppositely extending flanges 6 which conform to the curvature of the edge and are preferably of greater width than the flanges a above referred to. An upstanding portion 9 is formed integral with each of the lateral edges of the flange 6 and is arranged to form a trough through which the water draining from the track passes. This keeps the track dry at all times and eliminates much of the danger present when the old type of tie is used.
In Fig. 4 is illustrated the rail holding member which comprises the U-shaped body portion 7, provided with the arms 8 which are adapted to extend through the apertures 5 in the flange 4 of the tie and to be bent as shown in Fig. 1 into engagement with the rail flanges to hold said rail in place.
It will be apparent that owing to the particular shape of the base of the tie that the point formed at the terminals of the curved portion and the ends of the tie, will enter the material from which the road bed is constructed and prevent the tie from sliding laterally. It will be further apparent that owing to the shape of the bottom side of the tie that the bedding material of the road way can fill snugly around the tie and the contour of the crown will not be lost since the tie is of the proper shape to assist in holding the road bed in the arched position.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A rail tie consisting of an elongated arcuate base plate being curved from end to end, upstanding flanges formed on the longitudinal edges of the base plate, an enlarged upstanding flange formed integral with the base plate centrally of the longitudinal edges thereof, laterally extending flanges formed on the upper edge of said last named flange, said last named flange extending the full length of the base plate and being horizontal upon its upper face and arranged to support rails.
2. A rail tie consisting of a rectangular flat metallic base plate being arcuate and curved from end to end, an enlarged upstanding flange formed integral with the base plate centrally of the longitudinal edges In testimony whereof I aflix my signature thereof and extending the full length of the in presence of two Witnesses. base plate and lateral flanges formed integral With the upper edge of said last named HARRY BROWN. flange on opposed longitudinal edges there- Witnesses:
of, said last named flange and lateral flanges ETHEL L. M. LEAoH,
being disposed in a horizontal plane. E. J. CLEVELAND.
