Description

W. R. DEGENHARDT. APPARATUS FOR GENERATING OR PRODUCING GAS.
APPLIGATION FILED OCT. 6. 1914.
Patented Feb. 16, 1915.
TTED @TATTW wf h lfia WILLIAM RUS$ELL DEGENHARDT, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
APIARATUS FOR GENERATING OB PRODUCING GAS.
at 1 London Wall Buildings, London Wall, 5
London, in the county of Middlesexylfilng land, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Generating or Producing Gas, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in apparatus for generating or producing gas and refers more particularly to an apparatus for feeding or distributing fuel to a generator or producer of suction gas plants used in conjunction with gas 'engines or internal combustion motors.
This invention is also applicable to generators or producers for generating gas for gas fired furnaces, boilers and the like, and to any purpose when combustible gas is required.
This invention refers more especially to certain improvements in the generator or producer which is the subject of a joint application of myself and "William Jordan, Serial No. 800,965, filed November 14, 1913.
The object of this invention is to provide a suitable feed hopper mounted on the top of the generatingchamber adapted to feed large logs of wood or such like fuel to the generator, being adapted for use in combination with a basket like chute removably fitted therein which enables wood shavings, sawdust and such like fuel to be fed to the generator in such manner that the said fuel will not pack as is the casev with generators as at present constructed. Means for the admission of air to the generator are provided in such manner that the fuel is consumed from the bottom and the fire prevented from reaching the top of the feed hopper. T accomplish this object by providing a superimposed feed hopper mounted above the generating'chamber having a feed opening at its top fitted with a removable cover to enable fuel to be fed to the generator. Within this feed hopper is arranged a removable basket like chute to enable sawdust, shavings, fine coal or the like fuel to be fed to the generator without packing and at the same time enable the said fuel to gradually deliver to the incandescent fuel in the generator. Means are also pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

vided for the admission of'air and superheated steam to the generator below the basket like chute to assist combustion.
This invention will'now be more fully desc'rlbed aided by a reference to the accompanylng sheet of drawings in which- 1F lgure 1 is a vertical section of the top portion of a gas-generator showing the basket like chutemountedtherein for feedlng sawdust, shavings, fine coal or the like fuel to the generator while Fig. 2 is a some what similar view of the top portion of a gas generator with the basket like chute removed to enable large logs of wood or the like to be fed to the generator. be understood that the other portions of the generator may be of known constructions more especially as shown and described in the prior application No. 800,965, previouslyreferred to;
According tothis invention 1 provide a superimposed stoking chamber -1 for large fuel mounted on the top of the generating chamber 2 and which comprises a steel shell 3- preferably lined with fire brick =1 having a feed opening 5 at its top fitted with a removable cover 6 through which opening fuel is fed to the generator chamber '2. When shavings, sawdust, fine coal or the like is to be used as fuel for the generator, a supplementary stoker in the form of a suitable cylindrical and somewhat bell mouthed basket like chute 7 is inserted in is connected to a funnel shaped hopper or the like 9 which is furnished with a flange It will or ring 10 adapted to bear on the flange-of the feed opening 5 at the top of the stoking chamber 1 and held in position thereon by a suitable joint ring 11 arranged between the aforesaid flange or ring 10 and the door or cover 6, thus the basket like chute and the hopper portion can be readily and bodilv removed when different fuel such as logs of wood or the like is to be fed to the generator chamber 2.
In operation, when shavings, sawdust, fine coal or the like fuel is to be used for the generation of gas the fire therein is allowed to reach to about the top of the mass ,thereof when the basket like chute is filled :with fuel until it spreads about the top of the incandescent fuel in the generator as shown. The apparatus is operated by. a down draft from the engine through the generating chamber 2 in an ordinary manner. The zone of combustion rises in the perforated or woven wire portion 8 of the basket, the openings therein permitting free passage of air through the fuel therein causing the same to be consumed from the a bottom in a similar manner to a solid piece of fuel such as a log of Wood, by being gradually charred at the bottomthe closed in top portion 7 of the basket like chute preventing combustion of the fuel above the topof the perforated portion 8. Means are also provided for the admission of superheated steam to the top portion of the generator chamber 9 below the basket like chute. For this purpose an annular ohamber 12 formed about the feed hopper 1 as shown in Fig. 1 is provided connected by the pipe'13 toa flash vaporizer or other above the incandescent fuel when by the admission of air and superheated steam as before stated, the bottom ends of the logs become gradually charred when they fall .over on their sides and become totally consumed.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is An apparatus for generating gas comprising a generating chamber, a stoking chamber mounted thereon and having a feed opening in its top adapted to receive logs or other large fuel, and a detachable chute for shar ing's and other small fuel suspended fromsaid opening Within said stoking chamber, said chute being tapered from its top downward toward its center and thence flared outward to its bottom, the upper portion of said flared section being solid and the lower portion thereof having openings in its Walls.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
