To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. COOPER, citizen of the United States, residing a McCaulley, in the county of Fisher an State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Combined" Writing-Desks and File-Cabinets, of whic the following. is a specification.

This invention relates to combined writing desks and file cabinets, and has as its object to provide an article of this class so constructed that it may be ordinarily used as a writing desk and that the file cabinet may be conveniently moved into position to permit of inspection of the files contained therein.

Another aim of the invention is to provide in a combined desk and file cabinet,

in the top and back of the desk and will,

be so mounted that it will be unnecessary for the user to move his chair away from the desk in order to gain access to the cabinet.

For a full understanding of the inven tion reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved cabinet arranged within a desk having a conventional form of sliding top, said sliding top, however, being omitted in order to better illustrate the position of the cabinet. Fig. 2 is a vertical front to rear sectional view illustrating the arrangement of the cabinet and the desk, the pigeon-hole structure being however, omitted, for the sake of clearness. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one end of the cabinet, the same being removed from the desk. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the clips arranged within each compartment of the cabinet. 7

The ordinary pigeon-hole arrangement is indicated at 6 and is located beneath the top 4, although the structure as, a whole is spaced below the said top to accommodate the file cabinet, which will now be described.

The cabinet embodying thepresent. invention includes a bottom 7 which is curved from front to rear, preferably on the arc of a circle and which is of a width to extend between the sides 3 of the desk top. The

bottom is supported by the side-pieces 8 which are of segmental form and the arcuate edges of which define the upper edges of the sides of the compartments which constitute the interior of the cabinet, as will be presently explained. It will be observed that the arcuate edges of the segmental side-pieces 8 are concentric to the curved back 5 of the desk top so that the cabinet may occupy a minimum amount of space when in position beneath the. top. The side-pieces 8 at their apices are pivoted as at 9 to the sides 3 of the desktop at a point concentric to the curved back 5. The cabinet further includes a front 10 which extends the entire length thereof and is secured to the side-pieces 8 and this front is provided with a knob or finger-piece 11.

It will be apparent from inspection of Fig. 2 of the drawings that these clips may be readily raised so as to permit of the introduction and removal of files from any of the compartments and that ordinarily they will hold the files compactly and prevent them being drawn out when the cabinet is swung into and out of position for use. Also, by reference to Figs. 1 and 2 it will be observed that the user of the device wishing to inspect a file, may pull forwardly on the knob 11, the cabinet being in position housed within the top of the desk, until the front of the cabinet rests upon the table 2, in which position all'of the compartments of 'the cabinet'will be in plain View of the user and in position to permit of ready removal or'intro'duction of les.

In order to protect the files contained within the compartments 13 from dust and dirt and in order that the cabinet may be closed when it is swung to position for use, there is provided a pivoted top including substantially triangular sides 22 and a connecting top member 23 which latter, is curved from front to rear to conform to the curvature of the body of the filing cabinet.

By reference to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the sides 22 are mounted upon the same pivots as are the sides 8 of the cabinet and consequently the connecting top portion 23 is concentric to the body portion of the cabinet. It will be apparent therefore that the cover 23 may be swung forwardly, the cabinet proper remaining in the position shown in Fig. 2 so as to close the desk or that it may be swung forwardly as stated above to close or cover the compartments of the cabinet when theca'binet'is in position for use.

Having thus described the invention What is claimed as new is V 1. In an article of furniture of the class described, a table having an overhanging top, a relatively fixed cabinet beneath and spaced from the top, a movable cabinet including segmental sides pivoted at their apices, and an arcuate body supported between said sides concentrically to the pivots for the sides,the sides being'mova'ble upon their pivots to position the 'bodyof the movable cabinet within the space between the fixed cabinet and the top or'to position the same in front of the top.

2. In an article of furniture of the class described, a table having an overhanging top, a cabinet including segmental sides pivoted at their apices, a body supported between said sides and having compartments, the sides being movable upon their pivots to position the body Within the top or to position same in front of the top, and a cover member including sides mounted upon the pivots for thefirst-mentionedsides and movable pivotally independent'of the said first-mentioned sides, and an arcuate top extending between the said sides of the cover member.

In an article of furniture of'the class described, a base, a movable cabinet operatively supported by the'base, said cabinet being mounted to travel in an arcuate path above the base and an independently shiftable cover for the movable cabinet, said cover being adapted for movement with the cabinet.

In an article offurnitur'e of the class described, a base, an overhanging top having sides supported by the base, a fixed cabinet supported by the base, the outer walls of said cabinet being spaced from the sides and the overhanging top, a movable cabinet operatively supported by the base, said movable cabinet being mounted to travel in an arcuate path around the fixedcabinet and between said cabinet and the adjacent walls of the sides and the top, themovable cabinet being shiftableto positionbeneath the top, or to position in advance of the top, and an independently movable cover for the movable cabinet.

In an article of furniture of the class described, a base, a fixed cabinet supported by the base, a movable cabinet operatively supported by the base, said cabinet being mounted to travel in an arcuate path above the base and around the fix'ed cabinet, and an independently movable cover for the movable cabinet.

In an article of furniture of the class described, a base having an overhanging top, a movable cabinet operatively supported by the base, said cabinet being mounted to travel in an arcuate path above the base and being shiftable to position beneath the top or to position in advance ofthe top, and'an independently shiftable cover for the movable cabinet, said cover being adaptedfor movementwith the cabinet.
