Be it known that I, HERBERT S. ATKINSON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toothllates for Excavating Apparatus, of which the following is a full. clear, and exact specilication, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to teeth for excavating apparatus, such as buckets, dippoi-s, and the like, and while the accompanying drawings illustrate the invention as ap" plied to the segments of aclam shell bucket, I desire -it to be understood that it is not limited thereto, but may be applied to other analogous apparatus and uses.
I am well aware that it is not new in the all. to provide with cutting teeth the biting lips or edges of clippers, buckets and other such apparatus, but heretofore it has been the custom to attach each individual tooth separately to the digging implement, the resultof which has been that if one ot the teeth strikes a hard obstruction, to which blow the other teeth are not exposed, the uneven strain isapt to injure the lip or biting edge of the bucket, and cause the same to buckle or become distorted.
The object of my invention is to provide teeth for such apparatus which are formed preferably as integral parts of a bearing and stress member to be attached to the biting edge of a cutting member of a bucket, or the like, whereby the strains imposed upon one or more of the teeth may be transmitted to and borne by the entire row of teeth, thereby avoiding the dilliculties which have been present in the use of excavating teeth as heretofore provided. The bearing and stress member and its associated teeth I will herein term tooth plates, and, so far as I am aware, such tooth plates are new in the art.
A. further object of my invent-ion is economy in the cost of manufacture, and appli cation, of such teeth to the digging implement.
The foregoing objects will be made ole-a r by the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. in which,

of a bucket showing my improved tooth plates attached to the bucket segment-s; Fig. is an enlarged elevation of the reverse side of one of the tooth plates shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of two teeth of two opposing plates, with portions of the bucket segments shown in section.
Referring to the construction illustrated, A and B, respectively, represent the under sides of the usual and well known clam shell bucket.
C, D,-represent, respectively, the cutting shoes or blades of the bucket segments, each of which shoes carries a tooth plate, one of which is indicated, in whole, at'E in Fig. 2, the edge of the cutting shoe being indicated in said figure at F. It will be understood that these tooth plates will be of any desired length to conform to the length of the cutting shoe or the width of the bucket segments.
The tooth plates comprise a series of teeth I F formed as a part of and carried by a bearing and stress member G from the opposite side of which project rearwardly a' holes K, and the rearward extensions or holding members H are provided with similar countersunk holes L, through the former of which, one set of rivets, as indicated at M in Fig. 3, secure the tooth plates and cutting blades or shoes C, D, to therespective bucket segments A, B, and a separate.set of rivets N, through the holes L, secure the holding members H to the respective bucket segments. The exposed forward edge of the stress member G is beveled between the teeth F, as indicated in dotted lines at O, and the extreme outer edge of said member between said teeth is spaced from the biting lip F of the cutting shoe, the arrangement being such that a considerable extent'of the cutting edge of the shoes C, D, is left exposed to cut into the material, and the beveled edge t) of the member G offers little obstruction to the movement of the cutting blades through such material.
The inner surface of the tooth plates is formed with a shoulder indicated at P, which affords an abutment for resting against the adjacent rearward edge 0' the cutting shoes (1, l), and thereby aids in quickly and accurately pesitioning and fitting the tooth plates to the bucket segments.

2. In a bucket. the combination of the bucket Segm nts a cutting member on each segment, a tooth plate on each of said Hitting members, each tooth plate comprising a holding and inen'iher, and a phirality of digging teeth formed integral with said last-nained member and spaced apart thereon at the points of juncture ltll said holding and stress member, to afford clearance spaces for the passage therebetween and overlapping said holding and stress member of the teeth of opposing plates, said tooth plates being provided with position-finding shoulders against said cutting munbcis, and means securing the respective bucket se ments, cutting members and teeth plates together in operative position.
