WILLIAM A. MITCHELL, OF SEDALIA, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H. MINER, OF
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DRAFT-YOKE FOR RAILWAY-CAR DRAFT-EIGGING.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 16, 1915,
Application filed February 17, 1913. S'erial No. 748,794.
To all icizom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'ILLIAM A. MITCHELL, acitizenof the United States, residing at Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in DrafteYokes for Railway-Car Draft-Rigging, of which the following is a full, clear. concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft yokes for railway car draft rigging, and more particularly yokes for railway passenger car draft rigging.
The object of my invention is to provide a draft yoke of durable construction and eflicient operation. v
In the drawings forming a part of this specification Figure l is a side elevation,
, partly in vertical longitudinal section on line l1 of Fig. 2 of a draft yoke embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View, partly in horizontal longitudinal section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the front portion of the draft yoke. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the bushings.
Referring to the drawings 5 represents the draft yoke, 6 the coupler extension bar,
and7 the connecting pin. The draft yoke comprises a strap like member 8 of a general U-shape, having upper and lower limbs 9 and 10 respectively, and a member 11 connecting said limbs at their rear ends. The
Rearwardly of the forward free ends 13,
a 13 of the strap like member 8, as indicated at the numerals 14, 14, the limbs 9 and 10 are turned inwardly toward each other, forming the oblique portions 15, 15, forwardly of which the said limbs are again disposed in substantially parallel arrangement, and suitably spaced apart to form the slot 16, which is adapted to receive the coupler extension bar 6. The portions of the limbs of the yoke forming said slot are provided with vertical perforations 17, 17, each adapted to receive a bushing 18. The bushings 18 are each provided with an out ardly extended flange 19, which serves to secure the bushing against accidental displacement. The pin 7 passes through the said bushings and through the perforation 20 in the butt 21 of the coupler extension 6. The
points indicated by the numerals 14, 14. The connecting web 27 joins together the, oblique portions 15, 15 of the limbs as well as the plates 25 and 26.
Between the brace 24,-at the front end and the filler block 12 at the rear end of the yoke, and the two limbs 9 and 10 is provided the opening 28, which is adapted to receive a draft gear and followers. The pin 7 is provided at its upper end with a head 29, and at its lower end with the nut 30 threaded thereon, the same being secured against accidental displacement by the cotter pin 31. 4
It will be apparent that through the construction of the forward end of the yoke hereinbefore described there is provided a vertically narrow slot 16 for the coupler extension bar to engage in, and thus a coinparatively short pin 7 is required. By reason of the short pin greatstrength of connection is assured. Through the engagebrace insures against the tendency of the limbs to draw together in service, and'bind the front follower disposed between them. In this construction pulling stresses to which the limbs back of the brace are subjected are transferred in straight lines, a straight pull is given the forward ends of the yoke liinbsQand the pin 7 is subjected to a straight shearing movement.
I am enabled by reason of the construction; described to easily remove the pin 7 from above, while the voke is in place in the draft rigging of a railway car, through the employment of a short pin, and by reason-of the greater space provided between its head and the parts of the car above the same.
a place the upper limb of the volre higher in relation to the car frame, thereby enabling Further, I am enabled to.
the placing of the oke above the truck frame, T his is of special advantage in cars of low draft. The effective strength of this oke in transferring the shocks transmitted r the coupler extension to the front follower and draft gear within the yoke directly through the I-shaped brace will be readily understood.
A draft yoke comprising a pairof limbs a transverse slot between said lini'bs at one end, a member near either end connecting said limbs, each of said members being I-shaped in horizontal section.
WILLIAM A. MITCHELL.
