' To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES A. GILMORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at McComb, in the county of Pike and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Throttle Stems; and I do, declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as. will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and. use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in throttle stems for actuating throttle or other valves.
The object of the invention is to provide a stem of this character which is so constructed that it will remain operative for many years under constant use without any repairs being necessary.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a portion of an engine boiler in section with this improved stem shown in side elevation therein ready for use; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of said stem; Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment illustrated, a boiler 1 is shown having an opening 2 therein in which this improved throttle stem is mounted.
This invention comprises a casing 5 having a laterally extending apertured flange 6 at its upper or outer end with a ground seat 7 arranged on its lower face at its junction with said casing. This casing is adapted to be inserted through the opening 2 in the boiler 1 and to be secured to said boiler by bolts or other suitable fastening means. This casing 5 has formed therein at a point spaced inwardly from its lnner end a projection having a cone-shaped seat 8 and having a cylindrical bore 9 extending from the upper end of said seat and merging into a chamber 9, a shoulder or abutment 10 being formed at the juncture of the bore 9 and chamber 9 for a purpose to be described. It is necessary that the seat 8 be spaced inwardly from the inner end of the casing for a purpose to be described. A throttle stem 11 is here shown provided with an enlargement or head 12 which has a truncated cone Specification of Letters Patent.

shaped end 13 adapted to fit in the seat 8 forming a ground seat and the turning of this head 12 keeps said seat continually ground to insure a close fit at this point.
A shank 14 extends outwardly from the head 12 through the bore 9 and chamber 9 and projects beyond the outer face of the boiler to which said casing is connected. A shorter shank 15 extends from the lower face of the head into the boiler and is provided with arocker arm 16 connected with a rod 17, which latter is adapted to be connected with a throttle or other valve to be operated by the throttle stem.
A follower 18 loosely encircles the shank 14' and is adapted to fit in the upper end of the casing 5 and form a closure therefor. A coil spring 19 is; arranged in; said casing 5 between the follower 18 and the shoulder 10 formed on the inner end of the chamber 9 and exerts its tension to hold the head 12 firmly seated in the casing.
The shank 14: is threaded for a portion of its length near its outer end to receive a nut 20 which is adapted to force the follower inwardly and cause it to exert a proper tension on the spring 19, the periphery of the outer portion of said nut being made angular to receive a wrench. The terminal of said shank which projects beyond the threaded portion thereof is preferably squared or made of other angular formation in cross section to receive an actuating lever 21 which is arranged in convenient position for operation by the engineer and which is held thereon by any suitable means.
In the use of this device, when the lever 21 which may be a throttle or any other suitable lever, is turned to rotate the shank 14: and the head 12 connected therewith, the rocker arm 16 mounted on the shank 15 is rocked and through the rod 17 operates the valve connected therewith, and not shown.
From the above description, it will be obvious that there is no packing employed in this throttle stem and that the constant turn ing of the head 12 on the seat 8 will grind the seat and insure a close fit, preventing any possibility of steam passing out from the boiler through this seat.
The seat 8 is disposed within the casing 5 at a point spaced from the inner end of said casing a sufficient distance to enable the projecting portion of the casing to form a re-inforce for the head 12 and prevent the pull exerted on the rocker arm 16 from disengaging said head from its seat or moving it laterally relative thereto. A lubricating duct or aperture 23 preferably extends from the outer face of the flange 6 into said casing to provide for the lubrication of the parts when found necessary.
A dog 22 is mounted on the lever 21 and is designed to engage a rack 23 fixed to the boiler whereby the lever may be held at any desired angle or the throttle opened any desired distance.
I claim as my invention:
A throttle stem including a cylindrical casing having a laterally extending flange at one end'with a ground seat arranged on its lower face at its juncture with said casing, an interior projection in said casing provided with a seat on its outer side at a point spaced inwardly from the inner end of the casing, said'seat having forwardly and inwardly inclined walls and said projection forming a shoulder or abutment on its inner side, a truncated cone shaped head mounted in the inner end of said casing and adapted to engage the seat therein, said head having Copies of this patent may be obtained for shanks extending from its opposite ends, one of said shanks extending through said casing beyond the outer end thereof and the other shank extending beyond the inner end of said casing, said outwardly extending shank being threaded for a portion of its length and having an angular terminal in cross section, a follower encircling said outer shank and mounted to slide in said casing and form a closure for the outer end thereof, resilient means mounted in said casing between said follower and said abutment, means for adjusting said follower to vary the resiliency of said resilient means, an actuating lever mounted on the angular terminal of said outer shank, and a rocker arm mounted on the inner shank.
