Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. t1, 1915.
Application leg May 1, 1914. Serial 110.835,532.
To ZZ I'ui/mm it may concern Be it known that I, RALPH V. SAGE, a citizen of the United States, .residing in the city of Columbus, in the county of Franklin more particularly to freight box car underframes which are constructed entirely of metal, this construction having been shown and not claimed in my Patentv No. 1,059,770,
"dated April 22nd, 1913, filed August 3rd,
` The principal objects of my invention are to produce a metal boX car underframe which can easily be constructed, is light in weight, and of suflicient strength and rigidity to withstand the rough usage tc` which a car of this kind is subjected.
The construction of the holsters forms another object of my invention. These b'olsters are made of four pressed metal plates formed int-o shallow boX shaped members with outwardly extending anges. Two of these shallow box shaped members are disposed on either side of the center sill, with their webs backto back and in contact with each other. and having their inner flanges riveted together through the single center sill. lThe bottom flanges of the bolsters are tied together by means of a bottom'cover plate, while the tops are tied togetherby a top cover plate.
Still another novel feature is the central floor cover plate which covers, the central meeting edges of the floor plates and also reinforces the center sill.
An embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying one sheet of drawings, in which like characters indicate like parts. Figure 1 is a horizontal section taken on the line 1-1 of Fig.' 2, showing parts of the floor plates broken away to expose the underframes, Fig. 2, 'is a vertical transverse section taken on the line Ill- 11 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View.
Referring now to the various characters of reference upon the drawings, my car 4under-frame structure comprises a center sill 1 lof any approved form but preferably as shown here of a single l-beam to the end of which, between the holsters 2 land the endsills 3, are attached the channel draft sills '4, these being spaced apart to receive the draft gear, and their inner ends bent inwardly as shown in Fig. l so as to embrace the verticalweb of-theI-beam center sill'l,
while .their vouter ends are attached to the disposed in pairs on either side ofthe cen-v ter sill, and placed back to backwith their webs in contact, the flanges extending outwardly. Unthe innerl side the flanges are .connected together through the .center sill by means of rivets as shown at 6 while the floor plates 9 and 10 and the cover plates 7 are attached to the upper flange. r)She central and end. portions of the bottom flanges extend horizontally parallel to the top portion `with an inclined portion between the deeper center and the shallower end. The inner parts of these box shaped members are of the same depths as the center sill 1 so that the bottom vhorizontal bottom plate 8 ties them together, but the outer end is of less depth correspondingto the depth of the side sill to which` it is attached, thereby forming an ctlicient construction for the purpose intended.
'The floor of the car is made of plates 10 between .the holsters which have their meeting edges on top of the center sill covered by a cover plate 11 which also reinforces and protects the center sill. The ends of the floor between thel bolsters and end sills are composed of the plates 9 secured to side sills, end sills and draft sills as shown. The plates 10 are also riveted to and supported by the transoms 12 which are spaced at suit able distances apart between the holsters-and havetheir ends attached to the center' and side sills of the car.. y
13 designates the side plates of the car which have integral outwardly extending flanges 14 along their vertical edges by means of which the side plates are riveted together and act as the side stakes of. the car. If desired, a strip 15 or other strengthening members may be inserted between theseflanges to further stilfen the sides of the car. The lower ends of the side plates not wish to be limited to the exact and spe ciic details shown and described, but may use such substitutions, modifications or equivalents thereof, as' are embraced within the scope of my invention or as pointed out inthe claims.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is LA car provided with a single centersill ofrolled section which terminates between the holsters and the end sills, floor plates having their meeting edges on the 4said single center sill, draft-sills spliced to the body of the center-sill between the bolsters and the end-sills, and a cover plate laid over the meeting edges of the floor plates and attached to the center-sill.'
2. A carprovided with a center-sill which consists of a continuous member that terminates between the holsters and the end-sills, draft-sills spliced to the body of the centersill between the holsters and the end sills, and pairs of pressed metal bolster members disposed on either side of the center-sill and attached together through the center sill.
3. A car provided with .a center-sill which consists of a continuous member that terminates between the holsters and the endsills, draft-sills spliced to the body of the center-sill between the holsters and the endsills, and pairs of flanged bolster members disposed on either side of the center-sill and having their inner flanges attached together through the center-sill.
4. A car provided with a center-sill which consists -of a continuous member that terminates between the holsters and the cndsills, draft-sills embracing and attached to the ends of the center-sill, and flanged bolster members disposed in pairs on either side of the center-sill with their webs in Contact, the inner outwardly extending flanges being attached together by a single set of rivets through the center-sill.
5. In a railway car, provided with a center sill, side-sills and end-sills, a bolster built up of shallow open box shaped members having a vertical web and integral transversely extending flanges, disposed in pairs on either side of the center sill, the webs of said shallow box shaped members being placed back to back and in contact, While the adjacent inner outwardly extending flanges are riveted together through the center-sill.
6. In a railway car provided with a centersill, sidesills and end-sills, a holsterbuilt up of shallow open box shaped members each having a vertical web and integral transversely extending flanges, disposed in pairs on either side ot the center-sill, the webs of said shallow box shaped members being placed back to back and in Contact with each other, the inner adjacent outwardly extending'anges being riveted together through the center-sill, the central portion of said open shallow box shaped members being of substantially the same depth as the center-sill, while the outer ends are of less depth, and corresponding to the depth of the side sills to which they are attached. v
In testimony whereof I hereto afiix my signature in the presenceot two witnesses.
