UNITED STATES PATENT onto.
Jesse m. YOUNT. 01? SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNiA.
TWO-PIECE WELDIED luzuuuz snos.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jsssn MLYooxT, a citizen of the lnited States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco. and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Two-Piece 'elded Brake-Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brake shoes and pertains especially to a. metal brake shoei'or use on railway cars and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical, economical brake shoe, preferably made of two pieces electrically welded together, one constituting the wearing face and the other a shoe back to fit the shoe head on the brake beam; the shoe facebeing removable and renewable as it wears down, sothat the entire shoe does not have to be thrown away, as is the case with the shoes now generally in use.
The invention consists of the parts and the combination and construction of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross section on line mm of Fig. 1.
A represents the shoe back which is provided with the usual lug 2 to adapt it tobe fitted to the usual shoe head or brake beam,
' not necessary here to be shown. This shoe back A is preferably of steel and is concaved corresponding approximately to the periphery of the car Wheel which it is to fit.
here the brake shoe is to be used on flanged Wheels the shoe back has a chamfered portion 3 to accommodate the correspondingly formed side of the removable shoe-face plate 4. This shoe-face plate may be of any hard, durable material, such as Wrought or cast iron or cast steel, audit is preferred that it at least have a back'lining of steel indicated at 5, which is adaptedfto come up against thesteel shoe back A- and provide an advantageous welding surface.
' Preferably the shoe-face plate 4.- is trifle longerthan the shoe back A to'provid the end flanges 6 between which the shoe back fits; these end flanges 6 servin to properl center the shoe-face plate on are shoe bee and prevent relative end movement of the parts. The shoe-face plate and the shoe back are suitably united together by ah Specification of Letters Patent.

sides of the two abutting parts as shown 7; the shoe back preferal'ily having ind 3 portions 8 along one, or both of its 1 tudinal edges to form pockets and at? u sullicientspace for a proper welding or" the parts at these plates. This edge welding of the two parts together insu res a rigid union and a solid brake shoe with no tendency of the shoe face plate rocking on its back. Whenever the shoe-face plate is worn'down so as to have its usefulness .fillOllSly'ill'h paired, it is easily knocked oil of the shoe back by the blow of a hammer and another shoe-face plate quickly Welded in place by means of an appropriate Welding tool. The
shoe back and shoe-face plate are of substantially the same width in order to give a proper support throughout the whole length and breadth of the 'shoeface plate and it is for this reason that the recesses or pockets 8 are provided so as to aiford good opportunity for a substantially spot weld at these places.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A two-piece welded brake shoe consisting of a shoe back having a'steel vconcaved seat face, andla' shoe-face-plete'seated on said shoe back and havin a corresponding adjacent curved surface tting the concavity of the shoe back, the recessed edges and the shoe back and shoe face plate spot Welded together in these recesses, substantially as described.
v 2. A two-piece welded brake shoe consisting of a shoe had; having a steel concaved seat face, a shoe-face plate having a steel con'vexedsurface adapted to fit and com form to the concavity. of the shoe back, the shoe-face plate having end flanges between shoe back having which the shoe back' fits, and said shoe back gather in these re -In testimony wheiedil' have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing v JESSEM. room";
