DRINKING-enr. e
Application filed January 2D, 1912. Serial No. 672,4155.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Caspar: M'YTTLER, a citizen of the United States, and resident ot New Haven, in the countyfof N i' Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Holders for 'Collapsible Drinking-Cups, of which the following is a specification.
T he object of my invention is to provide a holder for use in combination with collapsible tubulardrinking cups having unsealed bottoms, said holder serving as a means for temporarily sealing the bottoms of the cup members and supporting the sides of the cup members when filled.
A further object is to provide a holder of the above character in which the (jup members may be readily inserted and as readily removed.
A practical embodimentlof my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a. top plan view of the holder showing a collapsible tubular drinking cup member oi" the character above described inserted into position therein, F ig. 2 is a side View of the same, Fig. 3 is a side view taken at right angles to Fig. 2, and Fig. l is a verteal central section through the holder and cup member with the iaws closed in full lines and open in dotted lines.
The collapsible tubular drinking cup member is denoted by l and is of the type which forms the subject matter of my copending application iiled or" even date here with, its serial number being 672,419. The bottom of this drinking cup member is unsealed and it therefore must be used in connection with means for temporarily sealing said bottom to peri'nit the cup member to act as a container for liquid.
rThe holder comprises a base 2 and jaws 3 and 4: uprising therefrom. in the present instance. the jaw 4 is shown as a iixed jaw preferably formed integral with the base 2 and the jaw 3 is shown as a movable jaw hinged at 5 to the base '2. These jaws are normally open and a stop may be provided for limitingthe outward movement ot the movable jaw 3. which stop is herein shown as a lug 6 uprising from the base Q. These jaws have laterally extended coacting surfaces 7 and 8 at their inner ends arranged Specification of Letters Patent.

when closed to pinch the-walls oi the cup member together at its bottom to seal the same for permitting the cup member to hold a liquid. These jaws may be provided with means for supporting the sides of the cup members when filled, as, for instance, laterally extended arms 9, 10, and il, 1Q, which form supports for the sides of the cup member when filled with a liquid. These arms aref'preferably curved so as to follow Ythe contour of the drinking cup member when opened by the liquid therein. Means Yare provided at the bases of the jaws for registering the bottom of the cup member between the sealing surfaces 7, 8, which means are shown herein as guards 13, lll, formed by lateral extensions of the base ot' the fixed jaw 4.
In operation, lf the collapsible tubular drinking cup member with its unsealed bottom is inserted into the holder with its bottom between the sealing surfaces 7, 8, of the jaws, the guards 13, lll, serving to register the cup memberiproperly. The movable jaw 3 is then swung inwardly toward the fixed jaw 4, thuslcausing the walls of the cup member to be pinched together at its bottom to seal the same. As the liquid is Vthen poured into the cup member, the jaws will also serve to support the sides of the cup member in a proper position for drinking. is soon as the person using the cup member is through with the same, the cup member may be readily ejected from the holder by simply permitting the movable jaw 3 to swing outwardly to its normal open position. The holder is then ready for the next suc ceeding cup member.
lt is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the'spirit and scope of my invention: hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth, but
l. A holder for a paper vessel having a normally unsealed bottom, said holder comprising two dii/'erging upright members movable toward and from each other and having their upper portions Jformed to substantially inclose the vessel, the lower portions of said members being relatively positioned to'pinch the lower portion of the vessel ywhen the upper portions of the members are moved to relative positions to steady the vessel for drinking purposes.
2. A holder for a paper vessel comprising two members movable toward and from each other, the lower portions of ythe members being straight and relatively positionedto pinch the lower portion of the vessel, the upper portions of the members diverging to support the sides oIp the vessel.
3. A holder for a paper vessel, comprising two diverging members movable toward and rom` each other, said members having pinching portions and vessel-embracing portions movable with the pinching portions.
A.. A holder for a paper vessel comprising two members movable toward and from each other, the lower portions of the members being straight and vrelatively positioned to pinch the lower portion of the Vessel, `the upper portions ofthe members diverging to f support the sides of the vessel, one of said members having a rigid base.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for 5. A holder for a paper vessel, comprising two pivotall-y connected pinching membershaving vdiverging extensions to steady rthe sides of the vesselfor drinking purposes, said extensions presenting portions to be grasped to hold the vessel with its bottom pinched. y l
6. A holder for a paper vessel, comprising two pivotally connected pinching members having diveiging extensions the upper porv tions of which are laterally curved to steady the sides of the vessel for drinking purposes, said extensions presenting poi-tions to be grasped to hold the vessel with its bottom pinched.
In testimony, that I `claim the foregoing ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Washington, D. C.
