METALLIC NEWEL CONSTRUCTION.
mamas.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1915.
Application med May 2o, 1914. Yserial No. 839,749.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DowLINe, a citiZen of the United States, residingat the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful v.Improvement in Metallic Newel Construction, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which'it appertams to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming,
part of this specification. v
My invention relates broadly to metallic building structures, and specifically to a form of newel post for metallic stairway construction.
F or reasons of economy, it is desirable in the construction of metallic stairways to have as many of the parts of more or less standard construction so that they may be kept constantly in stock and utilized to fill orders calling for a variety of disposals or dimensions.` rThis enables the filling of or ders rapidly andv at a considerable saving over instances wherein itl is necessary to roll and form as well as fabricate the material.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide a form of newel post of standard size which may be adapted to use in connection with various sizes oflassociated building structure members without requiring shaping or fabrication. A
As will be understood from the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents the application of my invention, Fig. 2, a side elevational detail, and. Fig. 3 -a cross section substantially on line 3 3 of 'I4` ig. 2.
The invention contemplates a column member l1 formed of sheet metal, and suitablynished at its upper end with a cap 2. An adjustable portion Il has a reduced portion 5 adapted to entend slidably within the column member l. Said reduced portion extends only part-way of the depth of the column member 1 and the adjustable mem# ber 4, leaving a shoulder 6 on the latter. By sliding the adjustable member 4 inwardly or outwardly relative to the column member l, the distance between the shoulder 6 and the bottom of the column member'l may be adjusted. rIlle adjustable member is suitably finished at its lc-wer end by a cap 7. This relative adjustability of members l and l enables the use of the newel in connection with various depths of structural members 8 upon which the newel and the stair structure are'supported. In view of the fact that. the structural members vary considerably in depth, the adj ustability of the newel obviates a great deal of fabricating when the newels are installed. In the use of my improved form, it is necessary simply to adjust the member 4 relative to the member l, so that there is the proper spacing between the shoulder 6 and the bottom of the member l to accommodate the structural member 8. rl`he members l and :t are then secured in the proper relative position by suitable fastenings 9.
I have illustrated the column member l and the adjustable member 4 as quadrilateral in contour, although, of course, it is obvious that they Vmay be of other form.
I am aware also that other changes may be made in the structure without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A newel comprising a column member, an adjustable member mounted thereon, a shoulder on said adjustable member, which shoulder is adapted to coperate with the column member to embrace a structural member, and means for securing the adjustable member to said column member.
2. A newel comprising/sa pair of members having overlapping portions, one of which members is provided with a cut-away pori tion adapted to receive a structural member, and a shoulder .portionY adapted toy cop crate with a portion of the other member for the purpose described.
3. A newel formed in two parts, one of which telescopes the other and one of'said parts being cut away to form a shoulder other part to engage a structural member.
4. A newel formed in two parts, one of signature `n the presence of two witnesses, which telescopes the otherfandfone kof id this twelfth day of May, 1914. parts being cut away to orm a s ou er adapted to Coperate with a portion of the Y WILLIAM BOWLING' 5 other part to engage a, structura'11r-vimen1ber, v Witnesses:
and means for rigidly connecting saidv arts.: VJOSEPH SMITH,
In testimony whereof I hereunto a X my FLOYD D. BRYAN.
