SPACING-PILASTER FOR SECTIONAL FURNITURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1915.
Application filed July 23, 1914. Serial No. 852,578.
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to spacing pilasters for sectional furniture, as it is used in the furnishing of stores. In the construction of such furniture, a plurality of sections are placed in superimposed relation to any de sired height and a series of such superimposed sections are located end to end with the adjacent ends of the sections spaced apart whereby" each series of superimposed sections is entirely independent of the others and may be rearranged at will, certain sec tions ,being interchanged, or having other sections substituted in their place, the same as if such series of superimposed sections were entirely alone. The adjacent ends of the sections are connected together by any suitable meanswhich may be readily detached so as to free the sections one from the other. It will be clear that with the sections in such spaced apart relation there will be connected together and with the spacing pilasters in place thereon.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
In the illustration of the invention shown, a plurality of sections 1 are provided and placed one above the other until any desired height is reached. These sections are readily detachable and may be readily removed one from the other. The ends 2 of the sections are each provided near the front edges thereof and substantially midway between the top and bottom with socket members 3 through the ends of which screws 4 or other suitable fastening means are inserted for the permanent attachment of the socket members to the ends of the sections. Each socket member has a central portion 5 bent outwardly so as to be spaced from the end of its section, said central portion being slotted for a portion of its depth as shown at 6.
The sections are located end to end with the adjacent ends spaced apart and the socket members 3 on the ends of the sec tions are located in substantially the same vertical relation and likewise are spaced'a distance apart. A connecting device lies between and spans the distance between the sections, the heads 8 of said device passing a space between the adjacent ends of the sections, and it is the purpose of this invention to cover said space at the front edges of the sections, the construction by which this is accomplished involving novel features which form the basis of my invention. The construction by which this together with other less important objects andpurposes not specifically enumerated is attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a transverse section taken on the line 11 of Fig. 5. Fig. 2 is a side elevation illustrating the attachment of the spacing pilaster to the sections. Fig. 3 shows in perspective, the end of a section and the attaching element that is permanently secured thereto. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a series of sections connected end to end with the spacing pilaster applied thereto between the adjacent ends of sections. Fig. 5
is a front elevation with parts broken away back of the central portions 5 of the socket members 3 and the reduced shanks 9 are received in the slots 6, while said connecting device between the socket members is formed with an enlarged part 10 as shown, hexagonal in cross section. necting devices is positioned between the adjacent ends of each section of the vertical series of sections as best illust ated in Fig. 5.
The space between the ends of the sections is covered by a pilaster 11 having a projection 12 at each edge thereof which extendsthe entire length of the pilaster and bears against the adjacent edges of the sections. The central portion of the pilaster denoted at 13, projects into the space between the ends of the sections. At a plurality of places along the length of the pilaster, on the inner face thereof, spring members, each comprised of a base 14, and rearwardlyextending spring fingers 15 are permanently secured, the spring fingers being fashioned to approach each other and then turn outwardly at their ends as shown in Fig. 2. These spring members are so 10- One of these concated on the pilaster that the parts 10 of the connecting device as heretofore described will be received between the spring fingers as the pilaster is placed to cover the space between the adjacent ends of the sections and as the pilaster is applied the spring fingers all yield to permit the passage of the parts 10 and will after the passage of said parts eXert an influence tending to draw the pilaster to the rear and bringing the edges 12 thereof firmly against the front edges of the adjacent sections. It will also be noted that the fingers 15 are of such width as to pass between the outer faces of the socket members 3 but engaging thereagainst substantially, so that as the pilaster is applied the fingers 15 in their engagement with the socket members serve to aline the pilaster with respect to the sections.
From the foregoing it will be evident that the spacing pilaster may be readily applied and detached'at will and that when applied in the manner set forth, it with the sections will provide a structure having the appearance of one built solidly without lines of sectional division. The pilaster may be removed at any time and the devices connecting the ends of the sections may likewise be removed leaving the vertical series of sections entirely independent whereby they may be interchanged at will. The extensions to the pilaster overlapping the edges of the sections cover the meeting lines of the sections and pilaster so that no lines of sectional division appear.
I claim 1. In combination, a series of superimposed sections, a similar series of superimposed sections located with the ends thereof spaced from the ends of the first series of sections, deta chable connecting devices connecting the ends of the'said sections, and a pilaster having detachable connection with said connecting devices and covering the space between the sections.
2. In combination, a series of superimposed sections, a similar series of superimposed sections located with the ends thereof spaced from the ends of the first series of sections, detachable connecting devices connecting the ends of the sections, a pilaster covering the space between the ends of the sections and spring members secured to the pilaster and engaging one with each connecting device, substantially as described.
3. In combination, sections located end'to end with ends thereof spaced apart, a horizontally positioned connecting device lying between and fastening the ends of the sections together, a pilaster covering the space between the sections at the front thereof, and-a spring member including upper and lower spring fingers between which said connecting device passes, secured to the pilaster.
4. In combination, sections located end to end with the ends spaced apart, socket members fastened to the ends of the sections, horizontal connecting devices detachably received by the socket members, a pilaster positioned at the front of and between the ends of the sections, and spring members having yielding engagement with said connecting devices secured permanently to the inner face of the pilaster whereby the pilaster may be detachably secured in position.
5. In combination, sections located end to end with the ends thereof spaced apart, socket members fastened to the ends of the sections, devices detachably received by the socket members for connecting the sections together, a pilaster positioned at the front ofand between the ends of the sections, spring members having yielding. spring fingers for engaging with said connecting device, said fingers lying substantially horizontal and being of a width to span the dis EDMUND MORRIS.
