To all whom it may concern: v

'Be it known that I, HERBERT MIDGLEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Vorcester, in the county of Worcester and State ef Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Hand Stripping-Card, of which the following is a specification.

The hand stripping cards heretofore in use fo'rcleaning garnett, woolen,A cotton, worsted and other card clothing have usually had a wooden base which frequently breaks, both because the nails used crack it and also because the strain comes where the base is not adapted to resist it.y The card should also be somewhat curved to provide proper clearance in use and heretofore such curvature has not been provided and even insufficient curvature has not been maintained. A

- The main object of my invention is. to provide a durableland serviceable stripping card and another object is to construct such a card so that it will maintain the desired shape.

Other objects will be pointed out below.

- My invention consistsmainly in providing for the stripper a ybase which will not break.

A feature is a base which is flexible so that it may be made with the desired curvature.

Other features relate\to important de tails which will be described below.

Teeth A are attached to leather backing Bin any suitable way and extend in rows lengthwise and across the stripping card, being hook shaped toward the handle, as shown in the drawings. Base D is preferably made of leatheroid, broid metal .or other flexible nonsfrangible material and has the curved Shape clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Base D and backing B are held together by clip E which is preferably made of a single piece of metal, the main portion e of which engages the edges of the base and Specification of Letters Yatent.

backing and which has portions e' to engage the top of the base and teeth e2 `to engage the leather backing, these teeth being bent 'back 'and clenched, the portions ,of the clip which engage the sides of the card being of the same curvature as the base for the pur,- pose of aiding in maintaining the curvature of the base.k Handle F is rigidly attached to the base by rivet f and has a broad portion f to engage the base, the broad portion -being preferably curved to maintain the proper curvature of the base. The outer portion of thehandle has an enlarged lip f3 to prevent the hand slipping ofi' and corrugations f4 f4 are preferably used to give a better grip. The clip is cut away at f5 f5 to engage the shoulders f f of the handle and thereby prevent movement of the handlek lengthwise of the card. Handle F also has projections f7 f1 entering between the backing and base to engage the under side of the base and prevent the handle rising away `from the base. The handle is preferably hollow and-tubular beyond the portion which directly engages the base so that it may be large enough to provide av goed grip and yet be very light, as it is preferably made of metal.

I have shown a handle in which the front edge g is straight and in which there are two reinforcing ribs g g having between them a space to receive the finger of the operator,fthe ribs acting vto hold the linger in said space. I prefer also to have the handle slightly concave'at the rear portiong? of this space to furnish a better hold for the finger. In Fig. 7 I show the handle enlarged and slightly different from Fig. l as to the corrugations.

In assembling my device I give my base the desired curvature and apply the handle to it. I also apply the teeth A to 4the leather backing, I then apply the teeth of the clips to the leather backing, bending them backward and clenching them as shown in Figs. 3 and 6. I then bring the basey and backing into proper relation inserting the projections j" f7 between ythe engaging the edge of the base and backing.

The teeth A are of fine wire which is somewhat exible and are' hooked toward the handle. The teeth of the card clothingon the cylinder of the carding engine are also of fine flexible wire and are likewise hooked toward the operator. The top of the cylinder revolves away from the operator while the latter draws the hand card toward him. The result is that the hooked teeth of the hand card strip the material o from the cylinder. There is no breakage of any ofthe teeth but the'teeth of the cylinder become slightly more hooked and the teeth of the hand card Slightly less hooked. When the ystripping is completed the hand card itself is cleaned by passing it across the surface of the'cylinder in the reverse direction from that just described the result being that the hand card itself is stripped of any remaining particles and a further result of this reverse action both the cylinder and hand card are restored to their .normal hooked shape.

It willbenoted that my stripping card is practically indestructible while it is cheaper than those heretofore known.`

An advantage of my card's that thefisur-` faces of the teethk will remain in straight lines lengthwise of the base instead of occupying the irregular lines as heretofore on account of the warping of the wood.

Another advantage isfthat I do away with tacks to hold the base and backing together, such tacks becoming loose on account of the strain on the device in use. My clips are obviously well adapted to hold a wooden` base to a leather' backing.

Another advantage of my card is that 1f the teeth lbecome dull or 4worn the backing may be removed using the original base while heretofore if the teeth became' defective andthe backing had to be removed, the base could not be used again. In this respect alone it ywill be clear that my invention provides a distinct advance.

An advantage of my clip made in a single piece is that it holds the base and backing practically rigidly together, the four sides of the main portion coperating to give a clamping function. t

The more important advantages of my single clip in other respects and of myclips if I use more than one are that wearing and loosening of the ordinary leather binders is avoided; a much larger number of points may be gripped by the teeth than is possible with tacks; the device is kept much cleaner; the edges are protected; and tacking which causes cracking is avoided.l

What I claim is: l. A device of the character described comprising a backing; a base; a handle havy ing a portion extending across the base and attached thereto; and a clip extending along base and backing and and backing opposite the the rear edges of the holding said edges of the base together and being cut away being that'the teeth ofy z die,

and another substituted means to hold the base and backing `together at the other edges.

2. A device of the character described comprising a backing; a base; a handle having a portion extending across the base and attached thereto at a single point; and a clip extending along the rear edges of the base and backing and holding said edges of the base and backing together and being cut away opposite the handle, the walls of the cut away portion engaging the handle to prevent movement of the latter in the direc tion of the length of said edges of the base and backing; and means to hold the base and backing together at the other edges.

3. A device of the character described comprising a backing: a base; a handle having a portion extending across the base and attached thereto at a single point and havdownwardly extending portion of the hanthe walls of the cutaway portion engaging said downwardly extending portion to prevent movement of the handle in the direction of the length of said edges of the base and backing and said projection `preventing the handle rising from the base; and means to hold the base and backing together at the other edges y f 4. A hand stripping card for use in cleaning card clothing comprising teeth; a backing metal handle having a portionv extending across the base, curved to conform to the curvature of the base and attached thereto at a single point and having another portion extending down along the edge of the backing; the latterportion having a projection entering between the base and backing and engaging the under side of the base; and a clip having a'main portion covering the edges of the base and backing and having a angeto engage clamping A the base and backing together at intervals,

said clip being cut away opposite for the teethya curved fibroid base; ay

vtogether and being cut away oppositejsaid thehandle, the walls of the cutaway portion engaging the downwardly extending portion of the handle t prevent movement of the latter in the direction of the length of said edges of the base and backing and said pro` jection preventing the handle rising away from the base.

5. Ahand stripping card comprising a base; a backing; a handle connected to the base; and a clip holding the base and backing and having a main portion extending along the rear edges of the base and backing and a flange to engage the top of the base; said main portion and said flange being cut away opposite theV handle, the Walls of the cnt away portions engaging the handle to prevent swinging movement of the handle in the direction otl the length of said edges of the base and backing; and means to hold the base and backing together at the other edges.

(5. A device of the character described comprising a ibroid base; a backing; a metal handle attached at a single point to the base and having a projection to enter between the base and backing and engaging the under side of'the base to prevent the handle rising away from the base; and a clip holding the base and backing together and engaging the handle'to prevent move'- ment of the latter in the direction of the length of the rear edges of the base and backing.

A device of the character described comprising a backing; a base; a handle having a portion extending across the base and attached thereto; and means to hold the base and backing together including a clip eX- tending along the rear edges of the base and backing and holding said edges of the base and backing together and being cut away opposite the handle, the Walls of the cut away portion engaging the handle to prevent movement of the latter in the direction of the length of said edges of the base and backing.

8. A device ot the character described comprising a backing; a base; a handle having a portion extending across the base and attached thereto at a single point; and means to hold the base and backing together including a clip extending along the rear edges of the base and backing and holding said edges ol' the base and backing together and being cnt away opposite the handle, the Wallsotl the cnt away portion engaging the handle to prevent movement of the latter in thedirection of the length of said edges of the base and backing.

A device of the character described comprising a base; a backing; a metal handle attached at a single point to the base and having a projection to enter between the base and backing and engaging the under side of the base to prevent the handle rising away fromthe base;,and a clip holding the base and backing together and engaging the handle to prevent movement of the latter in the direction Vof the length of the rear edges of the base and-backing.

l0. A hand stripping card comprising a base; a backing; a handle connected directly to the base; and means which hold the base and backing together and which also prevent swinging movement ot' the handle in the direction of the length ,of the rear edges of the base and backing.

11. A hand stripping card comprising a base; a'backing; a handle; and means which externally engage the base and backing and hold them together and which also externally engage the handle and thereby prevent swinging movement of the handle in the direction of the length of the rear edges of the base and backing.

12. A hand stripping card comprising a base; a backing; a handle; and a. clip to engage the base and backing at their edges and hold them together and externally engaging the handle to prevent swinging movement of the latter in the direction of the length of the rear edges of the base and backing.

13. A hand stripping card comprising a base; a. backing; a handle directly connected to the base; and a clip to engage the rear edges of the base and backing and hold them together and externally engaging the handle to prevent swinging movement et' the latter' in the direction of the length et' the rear edges of the base and backing and means to hold the other edges of the base and backing together.

14. A hand stripping card comprising a base; a backing; a handle directly connected to the base; and a clip to engage the rear edges of the base and backing and hold them together, said clip being disconnected from, but engaging, the handle to prevent swinging movement of the latter in the direction of the length of the rear edges of the base and backing and means to hold the other edges of the base and backing together.
