H. BAUER STEEL WIRE BRUSH FOR CLEANING THE TYPES ON TYPEWRI'I'ING MACHINES Filed Aug. 17, 1927 Patented June 19,1928.
UNITED STATiEQ Parser series.
I HEINRICH BAUER, or rma'rrr. GERMANY.
STEEL-WIRE BRUSH FOR CLEANING THE TYPES Ol l' TYPEWRI TING MACHINES.
Application filed August 17, 1927, Serial No. 213,510, and in Germany feptember 23, 1926.
. by way of example, in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 shows in side elevation the improved brush as a flat brush.
Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly in longitudinal section.
Fig. 3 shows in cross section a semicircular brush.
Fig. 4 illustrates the effect of one single bent steel-wire in comparison with the straight bristle.
The steel-wires are fixed in a mounting c of suitable material embedded in the brushhead (Z. All the steel-wires are bent near their free ends at a uniform angle so that they form each a shank portion a. and a cleaning finger b. The shank portions a are fixed in the mounting c and are hard and resilient, while the fingers b are resilient but relatively softer than the shank portions and than the metal of the type to be cleaned so that they will readily enter the type cavities and act therein without injury thereto. The brushes are normally in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. Then the brush is used by being moved over the type in the direction of the arrow-line (Fig. 1), the steel-wires yield slightly in backward direction so that the finger b stands approximately vertical. as shown in Fig. 4. The points of the fingers penetrate, under the action of the resilient shanks a, into the cavities of the type and remove all the dirt, while straight bristles slip over the cavities. a This effect is illustrated in Fig. 4. Th bent steel-wire a Z), fixed in the mounting 0, tends to execute, at the brushing, an oscillating movement around the point of fixation e. The point of the wire moves therefore along an are 7 which intersects the body 17 to be cleaned.
A straight bristle of steel-wire g indicated in ,Fig. 4 in mixed lines, oscillates around the point of fixation h and its point moves along an are i which only touches the body t to be cleaned, and cannot penetrate into the cavities of the types. Bythus detempering or making the tips or fingers 'of the brush bristles softer or of less resiliency than their shanks a two-fold effect is gained, firstly, the relatively softer and more flexible fingers slide into the cavities of the type and pick out'the dirt therefrom, in stead of springing over the cavities and riding on the surfaces. of the type faces, as with bristles whose fingers are of they same degree of resiliency as their shanks, and, secondly, the use of softened tips prevents the rubbing wear and tear or scratching of the type faces occurring where bristles having hard fingers, or fingers of the same degree of resiliency as their shanks, are employed. vide a type cleaning brush with metal bristles which will not only clean the surfaces but also the cavities of the type and is adapted to be repeatedly used Without injury to the type.
The brush shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is designed for cleaning types of typewritingmachines situated in a plane. The semicircular brush shown in Fig. 3 is designed for cleaning types arranged along an arc.
The brush-body may, however, be of any other shape.
The soft fingers of the steel-wires cannot damage the types and the tempered, resilient shanks (A have not only the effect to press the soft points of the wires against the types, but also effect that the dirt in the cavities of the types is thrown out by the springaction. V
I claim:
A steel Wire brush for use in cleaning the type of typewriting machine's, comprising a brush head, and wire bristles mounted upon the head, said bristles having resilient shank portions fixed atone end to the head and provided at their opposite ends with angularly disposed cleaning fingers, said fingers being softer and of reduced resiliency with respect to the shank portions.
In testimony whereof I affixmy signature.
HEINRICH BAUER,
I am thereby enabled to pro-
