APPLICATION FILED JULY 28,1914.

WITNESSES INVENTOR Wi -W JMJ www- FRANK KINNEY. 0F OAKDALE, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLAM FOB DERRICKS.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Feb. $1 1915.
Application filed July 28.1914. Serial No. 853.752,
To (171 whom it may mnrcrn:
Be it known that I. Fnaxn KIXNIZY. a citizcnof the United States, and resident of Ualcdalc. in the county ot' Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania. have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps for Derricks; and I do hereby declare the. following. to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to oil-well 'derricks formed of pipe sections, and relates more especially to the clamps for clamping the sections'of pipes at their joints and for providing for the connection of'the girls and braces tosaid clamps by means of whit-h the derrick is built up and braced.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a view of a lower. portion of a derrick showing my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 IS a perspective view of the clamp: and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of same, showing the pipe therein.
In the drawing, the numeral 2 designates .the pipe sections-of suitable gage and diameter, the lower nds of said pipe-sections resting in suitable sockets 3. The pipe sectimis 2 are connected at their joints by the clamps 4 which form the subject matter of my invention. These clamps are preferably formed of apiece 5 of wrought iron or steel of suitable-gage. The meta-l is bent to form -the tubular-portion 6 into which the pipesections are inserted, and the free ends 7 and 8 are brought 'up into parallel relation with each other and contiguous, the end 8, however, being tangential to the curve of the tubular portion 6 and extending beyond the end portion 7 and forming the plate-portion 8. The end portions 7'and 8 are provided with the openings 9 through which the compression-bolts 10 pass for securin, the clamp to the pipe-sections. It is apparent that due to the spring of the metal the drawing up on the compression-bolts 10 will act to force the clamp tightly around the pipe sections. as
indicated in lig. 3. The plate-portion 8 has the openings 11 formed therein.
The plate 12 is secured to the tubular portion 6 of the clamp. said plate being tangential to the curve of the tubular portion 6 and attached by riveting, electric welding. or any other suitable manner, and said plate i provided with the openings 13.
'hen the clamp has been clamped on the pipc-sections by the compression-b0lts, the girts H and braces 15 are con iectcd up to the clamps, as indicated in ig. l. The girts 14 are preferably tubular in form and connected by the bolts 16 to the middle openings of the openings 11 and 13 of the plates 8 and 12. The braces 15 are connected by bolts 17 to the upper and lower openings of the openings 11 and 13. asclearly indicated in Fig. 1.
By bending the metal piece 5 in the manner indicated, I provide the tubular-portion for'the clamping of theclamp to the pipesections, and at the same time by extending the free end portion 8 to form the plate 8 in the mann'er illustrated I also provide for the attachmentof the girts and braces to this extensionplate which forms one of the clamping members. In this way, I simplify the construction and at the same time provide a very strong and secure form of. clamp.
What I claim is:
1. A clamp for connecting the pipe sections of derricks. comprising a piece of metal bent to form a tubular-portion. the
free ends of the metal havin o enin s. com- 1 1 a a b pression bolts engaging said openings. one
of the free endsextending tangentially to the curve of said tubular-portion, and beyond the other'to form a plate-portion having openings therein, and a plate tangential to the curve of said tubular-portion extending out at right angles to said plate-portion having openingstherein.
2. A clamp for connecting pipesections of derrieks, comprising a piece of metal bent to form a tubular-portion, the free ends of the metal having openings, compression bolts engaging said openings, one of the free ends extending tangentially to the curve of said tubular-portion, and beyond the other to form a plate-portion having openings therein. and a plate secured to said tubularportion tangentially of said tubular-portion.
and extending out at right angles to said plate-portion having openings therein.
In testimony whereof. I the said FRANK KTNNFY have hereunto set my hand.
FRANK KINNEY. Witnesses:
