To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GLADWIN R. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Baltimore, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Screen Guides, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in window screens and more particularly to guide means therefor that may be readily attached to a window frame and will slidably support a window screen in such a way that the screen may be readily placed in position or removed from the window frame as desired in an easy manner.
An object of importance is to provide a window screen guide that comprises a pair of angular members to be secured longitudinally of a window frame upon one of the beads thereof and formed in such a way so that the screen may be readily placed in position or removed.
Another object of my invention is to provide means of the character described that is simple as to construction, is capable of being readily attached to window frames, and inexpensive to manufacture.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out as claimed.
lVith reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window showing my improved guide means attached and a screen in position, Fig. 2 is .a fragmentary front elevation of one of the guide members showing the construction thereof to permit removal of the screen, Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-8 of Fig. 2 and showing one of the guide members attached thereto, and Fig. 4: is a similar view showing one of the guide memhers provided with a cut away portion, said view being taken on line el-4t of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety, a window frame of the usual construction having mounted therein a window screen 2 of the ordinary construction.
My screen guide consists of vertical guide members 3 and 4 that are secured upon the outermost vertical beads of the window frame and slidably secure the screen 2. The guide members 3 and 4 each consist of a single rectangular sheet of metal that is bent intermediate its longitudinal edges and longitudinally to provide a vertical and flat base 5 that is to slightly engage the outer side face of the outermost bead 6 of the window frame. Along the edges of the base plate 5 are formed outwardly extending and longitudinal flanges 7 that are provided by bending the material outwardly and then bent upon the outer face of the outwardly bent portlons.
The material is extended after being bent back upon the outer face of the first outwardly bent portions, to provide a pair of spaced and opposed side plates 8 that engage the sides of the bead 6 of the window frame. A plurality of preferably countersunk screws 9 are inserted through the outermost side plate 8 and into the bead 6 to secure the guide member to the bead. The outer face of the upper window sash in the window frame 1 engages the innermost side plate 8. It will thus be seen that I have provided approximately channel shaped guide members that are formed with a double ehannelby the base plate 5. The screen 2 slides between the flanges 7 and is thus slidably supported in position.
As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and a the guide member f has its outermost flange 7 cut away at a point approximately centrally of the ends thereof as at 10 to provide a space sufficiently large to enable the screen 2 to be removed from the guide. It will thus be seen that the side plate 8 on the outer side of the member 4 is flush at its outer end with the outer surface of the base plate 5, thus when the screen is moved opposite to the cut away portion 10 it may be readily removed.
It will be readily seen that the screen 2 may be easily positioned within the window frame 1 by means of the cut away portion 10. Suitable means not shown may be provided to support the screen in up and down position and it will be readily seen that my improved guides will securely hold the screen in position either in its up or down position and to remove the screen it is necessary toposition the same at a point approximately centrally of the guide members 3 and 4.
It will be readily seen with reference to the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that I have provided guide members that may be readily attached to window frames of different characters and will sup port a slidable screen in a reliable manner so that removal and positioning of the screen is easily facilitated. It is desirous of emphasizing the fact that the guide memhers may be readily attached without necessitating any, change in. construction of the Window frame or without requiring the services of a skilled carpenter as any member of a household may readily secure the device.
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient andpractical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily Vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as set forth.
WVhat is claimed is 1. A window screen guide consisting of guide members to-be secured to opposite sides of a window frame vertically with relation thereto, the guide members comprising base plates, flanges formed on the longitudinal edges of the base plates, and side plates extending at right angles to the base plates formed integral with the flanges and engaging the outer faces thereof, said side and base plates to engage the side and outer faces of the outermost beads of the window frame, said flanges to slidably secure a window screen and one of the flanges being cut away for a distance slightly greater than the length of the screen at a point intermediate its ends whereby the screen may be removed and positioned between the flanges.

3. A window screen guide comprising vertical guide members having double channels, one of the channels of each of the guide members to receive one of the beads of the window frame and the other channel to slidably receive a window screen, means to secure the guide members to the window frame and one of the sides of certain of the channels being cut away to enable removal of the screen.
