- play the ribbon in an attractive manner..
A further object is to provide a reel: box or package from whichpart Jof theribbon may be removed without diminishing the exterior size of the package or detracting from its value as a display.
The invention consists in thefeatures `of construction, combinations and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth-illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed claims.
In the drawings, Figure lis an elevation of the body portion, cover and turning member of the box, showing the parts disengaged from one,A another. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the box. [Fig: 3 isan end view with parts in section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.,
In the preferred construction, the box comprises four separate parts4a body-portion, a supporting tube roll, for, ribbon or the like, a cover and a turning. member.
The body portion is preferably tubular and -is formed of pasteboard. ,-.lt consistsf out in the appended an inner tube 10 extending the full length of the box and an outer tube 11 extending approximately one-half the length of the box. The tube 10 fits snugly within the tube 11 and is secured thereto with glue or the like. A cap 12 is fixed in position over one end of the box body. A projecting support or bearing member 13 for one end of the ribbon carrying tube is. attached to the center of the interior face of the end cap 12.
' The projecting support 13 is cup-shaped and made of pasteboard and it forms a bearing for one end of the hollow pasteboard tube 14 around which ribbon or the like is wound.
The cover for the box, which is also formed of pasteboard, comprises a tube 15 and a cup-shaped end cap 16 secured thereto. The cover is of the same size as the tube 11- of the .bodyportion ofsaid boxfand is adapted totelescope over the upper portion of the inner tube 10 of thebody portion. The end 16 ofthe cover ispro-vided with a central. opening ofv substantially the same diametenasthefinterior of the tube 14. A turning member 18 .of pressed sheet metal isprovidedwith a circular series of depressions or finger holds 19. v The edge of the `turning memberoverlaps vthe edge of the opening in the'end of -the 4cover and the nger holds 19 fitsnugly within'the tube 14 and rotatably sustain one end thereof. Preferably, the linger holds 19 are provided with projections 20 which engagethe tube 14 and securelyconnect the turning member thereto., l.The edges .19 of the finger holds are radialso that they may be readily engaged. The box body is provided lwith a slot 21 that extends from its open end to the edge of its end-cap 12. A corresponding slot 22 is formed in the slip. cover and extends froin its open end to the edge of itsend cap 16. In order that the 'slots 21 and 22 may be properly retained in alinement, portions of the outer tube 11 ofthe box body adjacent the slot 21are cut away, as shown, to form a seat or recess 23, and extended tongues 24 are formed on the openA end of .the cover adjacent the slot 22 therein. 4 The tongues 24` engage the. recess `23, when the cover is in positionon thebox body, and thereby maintainthe slots 21 and 22 in these parts in alinement.- v
-Af roll-of ribbon 25 wound on the tube 14 is inserted into the box body and the end of the tube 14.is passed over. the projecting support 13 upon the closed end of the box body. At the same time, the end of the ribbon is passed through the slot 21. The cover is then slipped over the box body in such a manner that lthe ribbon extending through the slot 22 therein and the tongues 24 of the cover are engaged with the recess 23. The metal turning member 18 is then placed over the central opening in the end of the cover and the finger holds 19 of the turning member are pressed into the end of the tube 14. When the box is thus assembled, the ribbon may be readily pulled through the slots 21 and 22 and dispensed in desired lengths. If too much has been pulled from the box, the ribbon may be re- Wound by the turning 'member 18. The package is further designed to permit one or more layers of the ribbon to be wound yaround the outside theJeof in order that itl may be attractively displayed. In this manner, the package is well adapted for display purposes and at' the same time permits the ribbon to be removed therefrom without diminishing the size of the package.
It is-obvious that the details set forth may be aried without de arture from the essenof the inventlon' as defined in the claims. n
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1.y A displaying and dispensing package for ribbons and the like, comprising a storage boX,a tube, whereon the ribbon or the like is wound, removably and rotatably amounted in said box, said box having a circular opening in one end registering with the bore of saidI tube, and a sheet metal y turning member overlappinglthe edges of said opening and having a circular series of inwardly o'set projections engaging the end of said tube to rotate the same, substantially as described. f
2. A displaying and dispensing package for ribbons and the like, comprising a storage box, a tube whereon the ribbon or the like is wound removably and rotatably mounted in said box, said box having a circular opening in one end registering with the bore of said tube, and a sheet metal turning Vmember overlapping the edges of said opening and having a' circular'/ series of inwardly offset finger holds extending within and engaging said tube to rotate the same, substantially as described.
3.. A reel'box for ribbons or the like, comprising a body portion closed at one end, a slip cover forming the opposite end of the box, one end of said box having a central circular opening therein, an inwardly projecting support fixed to the inner face of the opjosite end of the box, a tube whereon the r1b on or the like is wound detachably engaging said support, and rotatably supported at one end thereby, and a removable turning member overlapping the edges of said opening and having inwardly projecting portions engaging and rotatably sustaining the adjacent end`of said tube, substantially as described.
4. A reel box for ribbons and the like formed of paste-board and comprising a tubular body portion closed at one end, a
telescoping cover therefor, said body portion having an inwardly projecting circular support centrally fixed to the inner face of its closed end, a tube whereon the ribbon ,is wound adapted to detachably and rotatably t' over said circular support, said cover having a circular central opening therein, and a turning member inserted through said opening and engaging the adjacent end of said tube to rotatably sustain the same, said box body and cover having alined slots through which the ribbon extends.
5. A reel box for ribbons and the like formed of paste'fboard and comprising a tubular body portion closed at one end, a
telescoping cover therefor, said body por- MARGARET B. MACDONALD. Y
