17 indicates the inner the cylinder and. 18 indicates the. outer plates thereon, the inner plates 17 being secured between the clamping ring 13 and the slidable clamps 15-16, and the outer plates 18 I being secured between the slidable clamps 1516 and slidable clamps 19, of the ordinary type screw-threaded upon rods 20 revformed integrally with olubly mounted in slidable heads 21 which are adapted to be moved inward with the rods 20 and the clamps 19 bymeans of an eccentric 22 of the well-known type, or in any other suitable manner. Inasmuch as the parts heretofore referred to are wellknownin the art and form no part of themselves of my invention,other than the improved clamp 15 of course,-'-it is believed that it will not be necessary to describe these parts further herein.
Coming now to a description of the clamp 15, 23 indicates the beveled head of said clamp, in the construction shown being thereof which slides in the usual groove 25 in the surface of the cylinder, being held slidably in said slot by the usual flanges 26. 27 indicates a groove in the body of the elamp15 in which is pivotally mounted, by means of a pivot pin 28, a dog 29, the inner end of which is serrated or toothed as shown in Fig. 2. v 30 indicates a pin screw-threaded in an opening 31 in the body of the clamp in such position that its inner beveled end is adapted to be screwed down into engagement with the outer end of the dog 29 by means of a wrench or other suitable tool 31 inserted in the outer end of said pin. As will be readily understood, by screwing the pin 30 inward the dog 29 is caused to move in clockwise direction as shown in Fig. 2-, bringing the teeth at theinner end of said dog into engagement with the inner face of the .groove 25, serving to lock theclamp 15 against movement to the left in Fig. 2. It will be understood. however, that the dog 29 is free to swing still farther in clockwise direction clamping means, are obtained from the stereoty mg room plates mounted upon the body portion 24 to permit the clamp 15 to move to the right in said figure.-

Thereafter when the outer plates are obtained from the stereotyping room the, pressmen are able to complete the permanent clamping of the plates upon the press in an appreciably shorter time than they would be able to accomplish this task without the use of my im proved clamps.
The movement of the clamps 15 toward the clamping ring 13, without a loosening of the pin 30 is readily accomplished by reason of the fact that the dog 29 in temporary clanipingposition stands in a posi tion inclined beyond the center of the pivot pin, 28. I do not, however,'rcstrict myself to this detail of construction except hereinafter specifically claimed. 1
While I have shown the clamp 15 as be ing capable of being temporarily locked against movement toward the end of the cylinder and away from the clamping ring 13, and while that is apparently the preferable form of construction as plate clamping mechanisms are now arranged, I do not restrict myself to this particular arrangement of the clamp 15 except as hereinafter specifically claimed, the essential'point being that the clamp is capable of temporarily locking one of the plates in position prior to the final permanent locking of the plates.
It will be understood that in the specification and claims I use the term permanent" locking to denote the locking of the plates for operation of the machine in contradictinction to the temporary locking by means of the clamps 15, and that I do not mean thereby that the plates are adapted to be secured upon theplate support for any particular length of time.
What I claim as mv invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination of a plate cylinder having a longitudinally-extending groove, a plate clamp mounted in said groove and slidable freely in either direction therealong, locking means adapted to engage one of the longitudinally-extending walls of said groove for holding said clamp against movement in one'direction while still permitting movement thereofin the opposite direction, and positively-acting means adapted to em locked in such position seici iockiiig means for moving it operative position.
