To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT Hnons'rnoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Loaf-Forming Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This application relates to loaf forming machines of the class adapted to the use of bakers or others for coiling sheets of dough or other suitable plastic material into the form of a cylindrical loaf.
The objects of my improvements are to provide relative positions and speeds of cooperating rollers for coiling a sheet of material without the use of auxiliary coiling devices; to drive the pressure roller at a higher peripheral speed than its cooperating feeding roller for directing the sheet toward the latter; to provide means for adjusting the pressure board in different angles with the face of the drum for gradually increasing the length of the intervening coil, and to provide simple and durable construction and assemblage of the cooperating members for securing facility of operation and eFhciency of action. These objects may be attained in the following described manner as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a loaf forming machine embodying my improvements; Figs. 2, 3, 4L and 5 portions of cooperating members showing different stages in the formation of the sheet into a coil.
In the drawings, 1 represents the frame provided with legs 2, hopper 3, and delivery apron 4, 5 the drum covered with canvas 6 and formed with annular flanges 7. The pressure roll 8 and the feed roll 9 are provided with the respective scrapers 11 and 12. The pressure plate 18 supported on the frame is adjustable by means of screws 14 into different angles to the face of the drum, all being of the usual dimensions and ordinary construction.
The feed roll 9 is j ournaled in a horizontal plane below the axis of the drum and the pressure roller is adjustable in relation thereto by means of movable bearings 15 controlled by the screws 16. The front end of the pressure plate terminates a short distance from the feed roll and above the an gular crotch 17 formed between the said roll Specification of Letters Patent.

and the drum. Said crotch is inclined in a forward direction owing to the different elevations of the drum and the feed roll. The shortest distance between said drum and roll should be less than the thickness of the sheet 18 of dough to prevent its passage there through. The drum and the rolls may be driven in the usual manner and with the pressure roll at a slightly greater peripheral speed than that of the feed roll for curving the sheet toward the feed roll and main taining it in continuous contact therewith. The peripheral speed of the drum should exceed that of the feed roll for facilitating the formation of the coil 19 within the crotch.
In operation, quantities of dough, each suflicient for a loaf are placed in the hopper and successively formed into sheets by passing between the pressure and feed rolls. The greater peripheral speed of the pressure roll drives the upper surface of the sheet more rapidly and thereby curves it into continuous contact with the feed roll. hen the sheet is partially completed its front end contacts with the face of the drum as low down in the crotch as possible, as shown in Fig. 2. The action of the drum then turns the end of the sheet in an upward and outward direction in the form of a coil, as shown in Figs. 3 and l. When the coil thus formed is of sufficient size it automatically engages with the adjacent end of the pressure board, as shown in Fig. 5 and is completed in its advancement between said board and the drum in the usual manner. By adjusting the front portion of the pressure board farther from the drum than its rear portion forms a tapering passage between them which serves to gradually instead of suddenly decrease the diameter and increase the length of the loaf during its passage to the apron.
The location of the crotch 17 below the horizontal axial plane of the drum gives it an outward inclination from the face thereof. This inclination of the crotch together with the greater peripheral speed of the drum and in a direction opposite to the movement of the sheet by the feed roll serves to form the sheet into a perfect coil by utilizing its own gravity and the centrifugal tendency imparted thereto by the drum.
Having fully described my improvement, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A loaf forming machine comprising a feed roll driven at predetermined peripheral speed, a cooperating pressure roll driven in the opposite direction and at a greater peripheral speed in relation thereto for the purpose specified, and a drum journaled with its axis in a horizontal plane above the axis. of the feed roll, and adjacent to the face thereof, said drum being driven in a direction opposite to that of the feed roll and at greater peripheral speed than the pressure roll for cooperating with the feed roll in coiling a sheet of dough, in the angular crotch between them.
2. A loaf forming machine comprising a drum driven at a predetermined peripheral speed, and a feed roll journaled adjacent thereto in a horizontal plane below the axis of the drum for forming an inclined angular crotch between the faces thereof, said feed roll being driven in the same direction and at a slower peripheral speed than the drum for cooperating therewith in coiling a sheet of dough within the crotch.
3. A loaf forming machine comprising a feed roll, a cooperating drum adjacent thereto and forming an inclined angular crotch between them, and a pressure roll cooperating with the feed roll and driven in the direction opposite thereto and at a greater peripheral speed for curving asheet of dough toward the bottom of the crotch.
4:. A loaf forming machine comprising a feed roll driven at a predetermined speed, a cooperating coiling drum journaled adjacent thereto and driven in the same direction therewith and at a greater peripheral speed, and a pressure roll arranged to cooperate with the feed roll and driven in the direction opposite thereto and at a greater peripheral speed for curving a sheet of dough concentric with the face of the feed roll.
5. The combination of a horizontal drum driven at a predetermined speed, a cooperating feed roller mounted below the horizontal axial plane thereof and driven in the same direction at a slower peripheral speed, for carrying a sheet of dough into contact at an oblique angle with the face of the drum at a point below said axial plane, whereby the initial coiling of the sheet may be effected, in a direction opposite to its weight and direction of movement.
6; The combination of a driven drum, a cooperating feed roller mounted beneath the horizontal axial plane thereof, and driven in the same direction therewith and at a slower peripheral speed for delivering a sheet of dough at an oblique angle to the face of the drum whereby the initial coiling of the sheet may be effected in an upward and rearward direction to that of its movement, and a pressure plate adjustably supported above the drum with one of its ends terminating a predetermined distance from the roller, for the purpose specified.
