To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BEERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Celina, in the county of Mercer and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Concrete Pipe and Mold, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter' of this application is a mold, adapted to be employed in the formation of a culvert, pipe, or like tubular structure.
The invention aims to improve generally devices of the type above described, and, specifically to provide a structure of the sort above mentioned in which the inner, expansible lagging is operated upon by an expander of novel form.
The invention aims, further, to improve the expander.
lith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure 1 shows in transverse section, one form of mold constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmental top plan of the inner lagging; Fig. 3 is a top plan of the expander; Fig. 4 is a plan showing one of the plates of the expander; Fig. 5 is a perspective showing the wedge portion of the expander; Fig. 6 is a cross section showing a modified form of the invention.
In the' accompanying drawings, and referring specifically to Figs. 1 to 5, both inclusive, the device isshown as comprising an inner lagging l including a plurality of separable parts, the inner lagging 1 being surrounded by an inner band 2. Bolts 3 pass through the inner lagging 1 and are provided at their inner ends with nuts 4. At theirouter ends, the bolts 3 are equipped with angularly disposed fingers or hooks 47 which engage with the inner band 2.
Certain of the parts of the lagging, which parts are indicated specifically by the reference characters 5, are spaced apart as indicated at 6, along their longitudinal edges, the inner band 2 being provided with inwardly extending tongues 7 located in the opening 6, the tongues being united by a bolt and nut structure 8. The space indicated at 6 and located between the lagging parts 5 may be bridged over by a plate 9, united by securing elements 10 to one of the lagging parts 5, the other edge of the plate 9 being adapted to slide upon the corresponding lagging part 5. However, if desired, after the necessary adjustment has been obtained, the plate 9 may be secured to the other lagging part by means of attaching elements 11.
The invention further includes an outer band 12. Bolts 14 are threaded at their outer ends into the band 12 or are otherwise secured thereto, the bolts 14 being held in place by nuts 15. The inner ends of the bolts 14 lit, without threading, into the inner band 2 and nuts 16 on the bolts form abutments for the inner band. Surrounding the outer band 12 is an outer lagging 17 held in place by bolts 18 and nuts 19.
At this point it may be stated that if an expanding pressure is applied to the inner lagging 1, the hooked ends 47 of the bolts 3 will slide on the inner bands 2, thus permitting the inner lagging to expand, the plate 9 automatically bridging the opening 6 betweenthe constituent members 5 of the inner lagging.
After the concrete, which is located between the inner lagging 1 and the outer lagging 17 is set sufiiciently, the bolts or securing elements 18 may be removed, thus permitting the outer lagging 17 to be separated from the outer band 12. By manipulating the bolt and nut structures 8, the inner bands 2 may be removed. The inner lagging 1 is also removed. The outer bands 12 preferably remain in place, to form a reinforcement for the nished product.
Expanders are provided for distending the inner lagging 1, as hereinbefore mentioned. Referring to Figs. l, 3 and 4, the expander is shown as comprising four outer plates 2O between which are located two inner plates 21. The inner plates 21 extend transversely of the outer plates 20 and all of the plates at their peripheries are so shaped as to conform to the curve described by the inner lagging 1. The outer plates 20 of the expander are provided with slots 22 and in the inner plates 21 of the expander there are slots 23, the slots 22 and 23 standing at right angles to each other.
Headed securing elements 24: pass through the slots 22 and 23. The plates 2O and 21 are thus held together against transverse separation, but are free to slide upon each other in a direction at right angles to the axis of the inner lagging 1.
The edges of the several plates 20 and 21 are spaced apart so as to define a rectangular opening 25 at the axis of the expander. In this opening 25 is located a Wedge 2G provided at its smaller end With an-opening 27 adapted to receive a cotter pin 28 which serves to hold the Wedge in place in the expander. The Wedge 26 terminates in a reduced neck 29 having a hole 30. rIhe reduced neck 29 of the Wedge is received in a slot 36 formed in the intermediate portion of a lever 31, the lever 31 being provided With a slot 32, located at right angles to the slot 37, the slot 32 serving to receive loosely, a pivot element 33 Which passes through the opening` 30 in the Wedge. The lever 31 is fulcrumed Vas indicated at 34 upon a yoke 35, secured to one of the outer plates 20 of the expander. Secured to the adjacent, oppositely disposed outer plate 20 of the expander, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, is a foot plate 37, to Which is pivoted a latch 38, the pivotal mounting of the latch being indicated at 39. Secured to the free, movable end of the lever 31 is a keeper 40, prei'- erably taking the form of a flat plate, having a slot l-1 through Which the latch 38 passes, the latch 38 being provided With teeth 42 adapted to engage the edge of the keeper 40, Within the contour of the slot L11. If desired, to 'facilitate the manipulation of the latch 38, the saine, at its outer end, may be bent over to form a handle 43.
The operation of the expander is as folloWsz-Vlhen the Wedge 26 is advanced by the action of the lever 31 the Wedge enters the rectangular opening 25 and forces the plates 20 and 21 outwardly, so as to distend the expander, and consequently, to distend the inner lagging 1. The Wedge 26 may be locked in an advanced position, by tilting the'latch 38 until the teeth l2 thereof engage With the keeper 40 Within the contour of the slot 41. It Will be understood readily that by disengaging the latch 38 from the lever 31, the Wedge 26 may be retracted, and thus the several plates 20 and 21 oit' the expander may move toward theaxis of the expander the slots 22 and 23 permitting this operation. The expander may then be removed and, as hereinbefore set forth, the inner lagging 1 together With the inner bands 2 may be removed also.
In that vform of the invention Which is disclosed in Fig. 6, the parts remain as hereinbefore described, saving for the fact that brackets le are secured permanently as indicated at l5 to the outer bandl 12a, the brackets 411 being detachably secured by means of bolts l@ or the like, to the inner band 2a.
In that form of the invention Which is shoWn in Fig. 6, the brackets 44 remain in the finished product, the inner lagging 1L and in the inner band 2a being removed, as hereinbefore set forth, in connection With that form-of the invention which is depicted in Fig, 1.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, an expander comprising a plurality of overlapped plates, the inner edges of which are spaced apart to dene an opening; a Wedge movable in the opening; a lever fulcrumed upon one of said plates and pivoted to the Wedge; and a latch pivoted to one of said plates and adapted to engage the lever.
2. In a device of the class described, an expander comprising a plurality of overlapped plates, the inner edges of Which are spaced apart to define an opening; a Wedge mounted to move in the opening; a lever fulcrumed on one of said plates andv pivoted to the Wedge, the lever beinglprovided With a keeper having a slot; a latch pivoted Vto one of said plates and passing through the slot in the keeper, the latchV having teeth adapted to coperate With the keeper Within the contour of the slot.
3;In a device of the class described, a lagging; an lexpander located Within the lagging, the expander comprising a plurality of overlapped plates, the inner edges of Which are spaced apart to define an'opening; a Wedge movable in the opening; a lever fulcrumed on one of said plates and pivoted to the Wedge; and a latch pivoted to one of said plates andV adapted to engage the lever.

In a device of the class described, a lagging; an expander located Within the lagging, the expander comprising a plurality of overlapped plates,'the inner edges of which are spaced apart to define an opening; a Wedge mounted to move in the opening; a lever fulcrumed, on one of said plates, and pivoted to the Wedge, the lever being provided With a keeper having a'slot; a latch pivoted to one ofsaid plates and passing throughrthe slot inthe keeper, the latch having teeth adapted to cooperate With the keeper Within the contour of the slot,
5. In a device of the class described, an expander comprising a plurality of overlapped plates, the inner edges of Which are spaced apart to define an opening; a Wedge movable in the opening; `and a lever fulcrumed on one of said plates and pivoted to the Wedge. y Y

In a device of the class described, an expanderV Vcomprising a plurality of overlapped plates, the inner edges of Which are spaced apart to dene an opening; a Wedge ice movable in the opening; a lever fulcrumed on one of said plates and pivoted to the wedge; and means for holding the lever against movement.
7. In a device of the class described, an expander comprising pairs of plates, the respective pairs of the plates being disposed at an angle to each other thereby to define, Within the contour of the expander, a peripherally continuous opening; and a Wedge disposed at right angles to the plates and movable in the opening, the wedge being adapted to coact with all of the plates.
8. In a device of the class described, an outer lagging; an inner lagging Within the outer lagging and having an opening therethrough; a ring surrounding the inner lagging eXteriorly; and means for connecting the ends of the ring detachably together, said means being located in the opening and being accessible from Within the inner laggino'.
9. In a device of the class described, an outer lagging; an inner lagging located Within the outer lagging and and having an opening therethrough; a ring surrounding the inner lagging eXteriorly; means for connecting the ends of the ring detachably, said means being accessible from the interior of the inner lagging, through the opening; and a bridge for the opening, the bridge being secured to one end of the inner lagging and being slidable upon the other end of the inner lagging.

In a device of the class described, an outer lagging; an inner lagging Within the outer lagging and having an opening therethrough; a ring surrounding the inner lagging eXteriorly and provided with inturned ends located in the opening; and a securing dlevice uniting said inturned ends detacha ly.

In a device of the class described, an outer lagging; an inner lagging Within the cuter lagging and having an opening therethrough; a ring surrounding the inner lagging exteriorly and provided with inturned ends projecting into the opening; a securing device connecting the inturned ends of the ring detachably; and a bridge attached to the lagging upon one side of the opening and slidable upon the lagging upon the other side of the opening.
l2. In a device of the class described, an expander comprising angularly disposed plates, portions of the edges of which define a peripherally continuous opening; a Wedge movable in said opening; the plates being provided with angularly disposed slots; and connecting elements mounted in the slots.
13. In a culvert mold, an inner lagging about which the culvert is adapted to be formed, the lagging being provided with an opening therethrough; a ring surrounding the lagging exteriorly; and means for connecting the ends of the ring adjustably together, said means being located Within the opening and being accessible from Within the contour of the lagging.
