TABLE DECORATION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1915.
Application filed March 16, 1914. Serial No. 825,136.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BEssm JUNE MAPES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Table Decoration; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates more particularly to table decorations, but is not restricted to such use, as it may be used in any connection for which it is adapted or appropriate.
The primary object of my invention is the provision of a simple and inexpensive box or device designed to simulate a cake in appearance, and to serve as a candle support or carrying means, whereby it can be used for childrens parties, birthday functions, or as a table decoration on any occasion.
The box or device is preferably of a form adapted to be placed over a cake, but may be used separately from a cake if desired.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top perspective view of the invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional and top plan views thereof, respectively.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body or box portion of my invention, which is preferably of inverted pan shape and in external form and appearance resembles a cake. In the present instance, the body 1 resembles a round loaf-form of cake, but may be made to resemble a cake of any other shape, style or size without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The body 1 may be made of any suitable material which is stiff enough to support the weight of the candles, such, for instance, as card board, pressed paper pulp, tin, or the like, and is provided in its top 2 with a plurality of openings 3 in any desired arrangement and number adapted to receive the base portions of candles at, as shown. In order to support the candles at uniform heights relative to the top 2, a partition or false top 5 is provided within the body 1 in suitable spaced relation to the top so as to provide a rest for the lower ends of the candles. The partition 5 cooperates with the openings 8 in the top 2 to retain the candles supported in upright position. To facilitate a mounting of the partition 5 within the body 1 in proper predetermined spaced relation to the top 2, such partition is provided at its edge with an upstanding flange 6, which is intended to coact at its free edge portion with the top 2 and to serve as a spacing means for said top and partition. It is evident that this provides an inexpensive form of table decoration, which is not only useful at birthday parties or similar functions, but may serve as a table decoration at any time. It is also evident that the use of my device over a cake enables the candles to be supported in desired position without injury to the top of the cake, the candle support being removed from over the cake prior to serving the cake.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
A device of the character described having a shell forming a cake covering having openings in one end and a partition located in proximity to the said end for supporting candles in an upright position the said candle openings arranged circularly and concentrically with the said end.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BESSIE JUNE MAPES.
