Be it known that I, LAURITZ W. ANI ER- sex. a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vaterbury, in the county of'New Haven and State of Connecticut. have invented a new and useful Improvement in Two-Piece Socket Covers and Holders, of which the following is a specification.
. This invention relates generally to electric light fixtures and more particularly to a two piece socket holder, the object of my invention being to improve the connection between the cap and body portions of the holder, and provide a connection which is as well adapted for the key type of socket as the keyless.
Heretofore the cap and body portions have been connected sometimes by a slip or spring joint and at other times by means of screws, but in both instances theconnection has proved defective particularly when the llgody portion is slotted to accommodate the \Vith the object of overcoming all of the defects of socket holders now in use I provide a connection embodying a threaded ring carried by the cap portion of the holder and movable thereon for engagement or connection with the upper end of the body portion.
The invention also embodies various other novel features of construction and combination all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of a socket holder constructed in accordance with my invention, this holder being adapted for a socket of the keyless type. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a holder embodying my invention and having the body portion thereof slotted to receive the key of the socket. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the two piece socket holder. Fig. 4 is a side view of the cap piece, and Fig. 5 is a side view of the connecting ring.
In carrying out my inventiCn I employ a cap piece A, a body piece B, and a connecting ring C. It will of course be understood that the general form of contour or configuration of the device as a whole may be varied or changed as desired. The cap Specification of Letters Patent. piece A is formed with the usual top opening A through which the conductor wires pass and the lower end A of this cap piece is of such size as to fit snugly within the upper end of the body portion B, said upper end being threaded as shown at 13, these threads being engaged by the thread C of the connecting ring C. The cap piece A is preferably constructed with a reentrant annular groove or corrugation A into which the horizontal flange C of the Connecting ring is seated, thereby efi'ectinga connection between the cap and, ring, this connection however providing the free turning of the ring as hereinafter described. In operation the lower end of the cap is inserted in the upper end of the body portion, the threaded ring overlapping the threaded upper end of said body portion, or in other words the threaded upper end of the body portion is inserted between the lower end of the cap andthe threaded ring carried thereby. The cap and ring are then turned so as to screw the parts together the ring working down upon the, threaded end of the body portion and this operation is continued until the lower edges of the cap portion engage the body portion at the point B This contact will serve to arrest the movement of the cap and then by continuing 1 the turning movement of the ring said parts are all tightly bound together, that is, the
upper end of the body portion is securely" fastened between the lower end of the cap piece and the encircling threaded ring, and inasmuch as the diameter of the depending portion of thecap piece is fixed it is obvious that the upper end of the body portion will means may be employed for efi'ectingthe union of the cap and ring and other forms Iii of connection between the ring and body portion other than threads can also be made to accomplish the same results Without departing from the broad principle of my invention.
What I claim is 1. A combined socket cover and shade holder adapted to envelop a socket, and comprising a shell threaded at its upper end, a cap-piece having its lower portion adapted to fit into the threaded portion of the shell, and a ring carried by said cap portion and having a depending threaded flange adapted to engage the threaded portion of the shell, as set forth.
2. A combined socket cover and holder comprising a shell adapted to envelop a socket, the upper end of said shell being threaded, a cap adapted to receive the upper portion of the socket and having an annular groove adjacent the lower end thereof, said lower end of said cap being of a size adapted to fit Within the threaded portion of the shell, and an angled ring having one portion adapted-to engage the annular memes the threaded portion of the shell, as forth.
