JOHN H. RICHEY, 0F SALIDA, COLORADO.
DRAW-HEAD.
Application filed April 27, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. RIGHEY, a citizen of United States, residing at Salida, in-the county of Chaffee, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Im-- provements in Draw-Heads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to railway cars and has special reference to a continuous draw gear for such cars.
The principal object of the invention is to improve and simplify the general construction of draw gears of this character so that any stress on one draw head of the car will be transmitted to the other draw head by resilient means, whether said stress be a stress of extension or a stress of compresslon.
A second object of the invention is to provide an improved spring arrangement for a device of this character.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a car frame showing the continuous draw gear applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
In carrying out the present embodiment of this invention there is provided a car floor frame indicated in general at 10 and included in this frame are the center sill members 11 each of which is provided with certain elongated slots 12. Slidable between the center sills 11 are the draw heads or bars 13 which carry the couplers 14:, said draw heads or bars being supported between the sills by means of keys 15 which ass through suitable openings in the draw ars and through the slots 12. To each of'the draw bars is secured a U-shaped yoke member 16, the yoke member on one of said draw Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 834,861.
bars being arranged vertically while the other yoke member is arranged horizontally. These yoke members are engaged, one within the other, and between their bights is mounted a compression spring 17. Between each of the members 13 and the outer part of the bight of the yoke 16 on the remaining members is mounted a spring 18, also of the compression type. Now by means of this arrangement 1f tension is exerted on one draw head the tendency will be to compress the spring 17 and thus cause tension to be exerted on the other draw head while in like manner if compression is exerted upon one draw head the tendency will be to compress both of the springs 18 and thus cause corresponding movement. of the remaining draw head. Thus no matter whether tenslon or compression is exerted the same is transmitted through the resilient spring arrangement to the other draw head.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and of the character specified.
It will be obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without depart Having thus described the invention,
what is claimed as new, is:-
The combination with a car frame; of a draw bar at each end thereof slidably mounted in said frame, interlocking U- shaped yoke members carried by the'inner ends of said draw bars, the bights of said members being arranged in spaced relation, a compression spring betweenthe bights of said members, and other compression springs each held between the outer part of the bight of a respective yoke member and the draw supporting the remaining yoke member. I
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. RICHEY.
