Be it known that we, Jomv G. KNAPP and JOHN F. Bonnnrsomof Warwickfln the county of Orange and in the State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Fastenings for Oarriage or Sleigh-Seats; and do hereby declare that the thllowi'ng is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, 3 reference being had to the accompanying drawing making'a part 'of this specification, in which- .Figure l is an elevation of the end of a seat and. i pf the side rail of the body as attached together;

, Letters of like name and kind refer tolike parts in 1 each of the figures. v y e The object of. our invention is to provide a, fasten "ng for the'back or adjustable seat of a carriage or sleigh, that shall-be efficient and durable, while at the ame time simple in constrhctionand comparatively incxpensive; and v e p g a It consists iu the employment of a dovetail bar, secnredto or upon the inner faceof the body-side, and engaging with a lugyprovided with a suitable corresponding groove, and secured toj-thei-nner face of the end of the seat, and. in combination therewith ot a pring placed within a groove in the face of said dovetail bar, soas to engage with and lock thereon said lug, substanti lly asis-hereinatter shown and described.

Attached to or upon the inner face-of the railB is a metal bar,1D, having paralleledg'es, which, as shown in fig. 3, are beveled inward fromtthe inner face to the outer face of. said bar, was to give to the same a dovetail form, transversely.

then slide it to the rear, by which means the-front V end of the springs (which are beveledinward and rearward) are pressed within their grooves by the lugs, so as to permit the latter to pass over. said bars untilthey reach the shoulders d,when said springs willbe released, and, pressing outward, lock-said lugs in place. e

To remove the seat 'the springs are pressed outward until the lugs are released, when said seat may be drawn forward. I 1

The especial advantages, possessed by this device are that it affords perfect security of position to the seat, is durable, simple in construction, and can be furnished at acoiuparatively Sillitll cost. 3 l

The bar D, provided-With the shoulder d, the lug I], and the spring F, whenconstructed as described, and combined with the seat 0 and rail B, in the |nanner and for the purpose substantially as specified.
