ALONZO T. BOON AND LUCIEN MILLS, OF GALESBURG, ILLINOIS.-v
Letters Patent No! 86,900, dated February 16, 1869; antedated Janua/rg 1, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEIDI-HOLDERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making' part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ALONZO 1. Boos and Looms MILLS, of Gralesbnrg,- in Knox county, andState of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rein-Holders; and we do'hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the accompanyingdrawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view, and Figure 2 is a transverse section, as indicated by the red line at y. Like letters in the two figures of the drawings indicate like parts.
Our invention is an improved device to be attached to the dash of a carriage, for holding the reins, and consists of a plate working on pivots attached to a metallic ease, or frame, which is provided with an arm, or projecting bar, under which the reins are placed, and against which they are held by the pressure of the plate, imparted by a spring upon the under side of the of the case, with one endv bearing upon the lower side 7 of the plate, near the lower end thereof, as seen in fig. 2. The reins are fastened by being drawn between the arm or cross-bar-B and plate 0, the projection or lip b facilitating this process, by the reins catching first on that, and bearing the plate down, so that the reins readily pass between it and the arm, and are held in place by the pressure of the plate imparted by the spring, and also by the pressure of the reins on the top end of the plate, so that, when the reins are properly in the holder, a forward pressure on them increases the pressure of the plate against them, between it and the arm, and tends to hold them the tighter, while drawing backward on the reins, loosens them, and they are then easily disengaged from the holder.
This device is very simple in its construction, and may all be cast except the spring, and hence can be made at small cost; and being so constructed as to be readily attached to the dash-board of any carriage, will be found to be a very cheap, convenient, and yet thorough rein-holder.
Having thus fully described our invention,
What we claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
lhe rein-holder, constructed with case, or frame A, having an arm, or cross-bar, B, and plate-G, with lip b, operated by the spring D, substantially as described,
