LINE-CASTING STOP DEVICE FOR TYPE-CASTING MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 29, 1914. Serial No. 815,151.
T rzZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I. STERLING B. Emsronn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley. in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Line-Casting Stop Devices for Type-Casting Ma chines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to linotype and typographic machines, and particularly to means for controlling the operation of the pot pump lever. I
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, practicable. reliable. semiautomatically operable controller whereby the operation oi the pot pump lever can be readily controlled.
It is a further object of the invention to I provide a simple controller or device, operable by the operator. for interrupting the pressure movementot the pot pump lever of the machine when it is desired to prevent the casting of a slug from a line of matrices which is passing to the vise oi the mach ne: and to provide such a controller as will operate automatically to permit the operation of the pot pump lever without requiring the attention of the operator of the mach ne to bring the device into operati e position.
Due to accidental operation of the kevs of the machine by an operator, or due to the transposition of matrices and spacebands during assemblage in the assembler, it frequently happens that a line being compiled in the assembler will be in improper order, with the result that when passing to the casting positionin the machine an improper slug is cast. and this, when finally deposited in the stick, unless withdrawn by the operator. passes into the form and escapes detection. with the result that the error is not found until the column has been printed.
It is the principal purpose oi the invention to provide a simple means by which the operator can readily prevent the casting of a miscompiled line from the erroneously setline of matrices in the vise, thus relieving the operator of the close attention which he must give ordinarily to the action of a machine-in setting a line of matrices and permitting him to operate free of this burden, giving all of his attention-to avoiding the necessity of his breaking mo-v the copy and tion at the keyboard, when operating, as is necessary when he must stop to remove the hot pi line from the stick.
Another advantage of my present invention is that by its use there is no danger of squirts caused by matrices getting im, properly positioned in the line being cast, as by the simple actuation of the controller by the operator, the casting of the line,
though it may have been assembled in the device, is entirely avoided.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation, showing diagrammatically the parts of a linotype machine involved in the present combination. Fig. 2 is a. planview of the operating lever of the stop lever. i
In Fig. 1, 2 represents the front end of the usual operating lever which operates the stop lever 3. Fig. 2, which is adapted to be interposed in the downward path of the pot pump lever, indicated at 4, the function of which is to eject metal from the metal pot to cast a line from a line of matrices assembled in the vise. One of the jaws of the vise is shown at 5, Fig. 1. The operating lever 2 is provided with an adjustable screw 6 which may be moved toward or from the adjacent'vise member 5. as condi-. tions may require. Ordinarily the screw 6 of the lever 2 is set in such juxtaposition to the jaw 5 that when the latter spreads and locks a line of matrices, it will move toward the screw 6, and, under certain conditions, engage the latter and throw the lever 2 so as to rock the stop lever 3 and carry it clear of the pot pump lever 4 and allow the casting movement of the same.
The present invention comprchends a means which may be introduced when the operator desires to prevent the casting of a slug from a line of matrices in the assembler. T he stop or controlling device in this embodiment comprises a lever 7, pivoted at 8 upon a convenient portion of the machine frame, the lever having a handle portion 9 conveniently disposed with relation to the position of the operator.- The handle, when pressed downwardly, lifts the-oppo site end of the lever, upon which is pivoted at 10 a dog 11, which is here shown as having a reduced end portionl2. When the handle 9 is pressed downwardly by the operator the dog 11 is elevated so that the thinner portion 12 is brought into position between the adjacent vise part 5 and the screw 6, so that the vise when adjusting will not engage the screw 6. Therefore the pot pump lever will beprevented from completing its cycle and no line will be cast in the casting mechanism from the matrices assembled inthe vise.
During the continued operation of the linotype machine the line of matrices will be carried from the casting position and the lever or controller 7 remains in its noncasting or disconnected position until it is thrown by the operator to carry the dog 11 down into coupling position, or until it is automatically thrown intooperative posit tion by its engagement with a shoulder 13 secured on a convenient portion of the assembler elevator 14s The assembler elevator 14 when moving upwardly with an assembled line of matrices causes the shoulder or trip device 13 to engage the adjacent portion of the lever 7, tilting it upwardly, and moving the dog 11 downwardly so that its thicker portion intervenes between the adj acent jaw 5 and the screw 6 of the operating lever 2. Thus it will be seen that the coupler 7 is normally in such a position that the dog 11 intervenes and transmits motion from the vise jaw 5 to the-operating lever .2; the latter acting throughthe medium of the pot pump lever stop lever 3 to release the pot pump lever 4c and allow it'to'continue its functional movement.
When for any reason the operator throws the controller lever 7 downwardly at the handle 9 to remove the dog 11 from intervening position, then no slug would be cast from the line of matrices for the reason that the pot pump lever stop lever would be cleared. Then on the immediately succeeding upward movement of the assembler 14 the shoulder l would be carried into engagement and throw the controller lever 7. This automatic operation occurs before the line of matrices in the assembler 14 is shifted to the line-casting position.
Oscillating movement of the lever is limited by suitable adjustable stops or screws 15 which engage the contiguous frame. Play of the lever 7 is prevented by a friction washer or suitable device 16, shown here as on the pivot 8 and bearing on and holding the lever in place when raised or lowered.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. In a line-casting machine, having pump mechanism, a matrix vise, an assembler and a device having a part interposable between said vise and pump mechanism for, trans: mitting movement from the vise to the pump mechanism, said device being manually movable to clear said members for non-transmission when it is desired to prevent line castv and manually'shifta is from said position.
3. In a line-casting machine, an operating lever for the pump stop lever, the matrix line vise,'an assembler, and means with a part interposable between said vise and operating lever to transmit motion from the vise to the lever, and manually shiftable from said position and the assembler. 1
4. In a line-casting machine, an assembler, a vise member, and an operating lever for the stop lever, means for transmitting motion from the vise member to the stop lever operating lever, said-means comprising a lever with a dog manually movable to nontransmitting and mechanically movable by the assembler to transmitting position.
5. In a line-casting machine, in combination, with the vise and the operating lever for the stop leverof the pump operating lever, a dog movable to be interposed between the vise and the operating lever for the stop lever for actuatingthe stop lever operating lever from the vise, and means for automatically moving the dog to interposed position for actuating said operating lever for the stop lever.
6. In a line casting machine, in combination with the operating lever for the stop lever of the pump, the matrix vise and the assembler, means operated by the assembler to maintain connection between the operating lever and vise to enable the operating lever to be actuated from the vise, said means being manually movable to disconnect the operating lever from the vise.
7 In a line-casting machine, in combination with the operating lever for the stop lever ,of the pump lever, the matrix vise, and the assembler, means for actuation by the assembler movements to maintain coupling of the vise and the operating lever including a manually operable part to enable the operating lever to be disconnected from the vise.
8. In a line-casting machine, in combination with the operating lever for the stop lever of the pump lever, the matrix vise, and the assembler, means for actuation by the ass sembler to maintain coupling of the vise and operating lever which means is capable of being manually moved to uncouple said vise and operating lever.
9. Ina line-casting machine, in combinareturnable thereto by tion with the matrix vise, the operating lever for the stop lever of the pump-levernormally disconnected from said vise and the assembler, means for actuation by the assembler to maintain operative connection between the operating lever and the vise including a part capable of being manually moved to break said connection, said part upon manual release automatically'being returned to normal position by said assembler.
10. 111 a line casting machine having a pump and a matrix vise, means movable to a position to be engaged by the vise to enable said pump to be actuated upon movement of the vise, means to manually render said first named means inoperative, and means to automatically restore said first named means to normal position at a predetermined period following its manual release.
