To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, VILLIAM NICHOLAS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at No. 222 WVest Twenty-third street, in the city'of New York, county and State of New York, and l/VILLIAM ACKERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the village of Larchmont, State of New York, in the county of Westchester, in said State, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Means for Duplicating of Character-Casting in Type-Composing Machines, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
Our invention relates to type casting and composing machines and has for its object to provide means whereby a machine of the class described which is designed for casting type as they occur in regular composition, in accordance with a controller mechanism theretofore prepared, may be converted into a sort casting machine, in which a single character is repeatedly cast until the required number has been reproduced.
Our invention comprises mechanism to be employed in connection with type casting and composing machines such as is described in our joint Patents Nos. 964,677 and 964,67 9, wherein a tape controller mechanism is used in connection with the machine described in the former patent, while separate selector devices are used in that of the latter patent. vOur improvements will apply with slight modifications to either form of mechanism, or to any type casting machines in which a controller mechanism actuates operable parts. However, the present illustrated preferred form of our improvement will be described as in connection with said last mentioned patent in which separable controllers are prepared for each individual type that iscast, as well as for setting the justifier mechanism and for operations required to operate the type casting machine.
Generically our improvement comprises mechanism for disconnecting the actuating means for feeding the controller mechanism through the index head of whichever type of .casteremployed, in the first instance and Specification of Letters Patent.

providing a mechanism whereby the line of sorts cast may be fed into the galley mechanism without the employment of the usual trip selector or perforation as the case may be, so that the lines themselves automatically operate to trip the justifier cam which in turn actuates the parts that are'employed to insert the lines in the galleys. These operations are performed while the machine continues casting type upon a single selector or perforation, while being held in the index head of the machine, the feeding mechanism thereof not being operative during the time the driving shaft and other portions of the mechanism are under full headway to produce type.
Having reference-to the drawingsillustrative of a preferred form of our mechanism, l igure 1 is a side elevation of that portion of the type caster shown in said Patent 96%,679 as necessary to illustrate the application of our present improvement; Fig. 1 a detail; and Figs. 2, 3, 4L and 5 are respectively a side elevation, plan view and front elevations of other portions of said machine illustrating the galley plunger operating connections. Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the frame of a type casting machine similar to that described in said Patent No. 964,67 9, having the side plate 2, to which is attached a controller mechanism of the type therein illustrated; A driving shaft 3 is journaled in brackets at the top portion of the said frame upon which are mounted the principal actuating camsof the type casting machine, among which is the feed wheel actuating cam '5 keyed thereto and the justifier setting cam 10, which, while it is loosely mounted upon said shaft 3, is only driven when operably clutched to said shaft by means of a tripping mechanism such as is described in said patent.
In our present invention, we operate the tripping mechanism by means of the "line pushing mechanism which insertsthe type in the galley, and may consist of any line advancing device such as the member 19 which is partially shown (Fig. 3) in itsposition against the line of sorts 16, the op: posite end of which line impingesupon a cross member 17 connected to .a slide 18 which in turn by means of mechanism which will be hereinafter more fully explained, operates to throw the lever 20 into the dot ted position shown in Fig. 2, which disconnects it from the trip arm 24; which is thereby permitted to drop by spring con nected means (not shown) in order to effect the clutching of the justifier cam 10 to the driving shaft 3.
The action of the justifier cam having been connected to the driving shaft in this manner, causes it to go through the opera tions described in said last mentioned patent, and among other functions performed thereby, delivers the line into the galley, by pressing the head bar 19 of the galley upon which the member 18 is slid-ably mounted.
The justifier cam having thus operated, comes to a stop automatically after completing a single revolution, and the driving shaft continues to rotate thereby performing the various functions of the type casting machine, among which is that of actuating the feed wheel of the type casting machine, which being fully described in said patent will not be here referred to further than to point out that at each rotation of the driving shaft the cam 5 rocks the bell lever 6 by means of the roll 7 thereon, being held upon the periphery of said cam by action of the spring 8 upon said lever. At the outer end of the other arm of said bell lever is pivotally mounted a rod 9 which upon its alternate reciprocations operates the feed wheel mechanism in a manner fully de scribed in said patent, by reference to which it will be understood that at each operation of the feed wheel actuating mechanism the selectors that are thereby fed into the index mechanism are carried into position to operate upon the proper contact making levers, and immediately pass out of range of the contact levers of said mechanism. By means, however, of a sliding member 25 in the side plate 2 of the frame of the cast ing machine, a lock is provided for holding the bell lever 6 in such position that its roll will not follow the periphery of the cam as it rotates and consequently the feed mechanism will thereafter not be operated. Therefore the operator will set the member 25 immediately after the required selector we been carried by the feeding mechanism into the casting position, which is accom plished by means of the handle 26 attached to the opposite end of the member 25 which upon being carried into the position shown in Fig. 1 will thrust the outer end of the rod 25 into the path of the swinging arm 22 of the bell lever 6, when the roll 7 rests upon the high part of the feed wheel actuating cam 5. In similar manner, when it is desired to present another selector to the index head, the rod 25 is withdrawn by use of the handle 26 in the manner indicated,
and replaced as soon as the next succeeding selector occupies the operable position in the index head.
The selector thus having been brought into controlling position in the index head, and the feed wheel actuating lever being locked in an inoperative position, the type plunger 15 will insert a type or sort 16 into the galley mechanism at each rotation of the driving shaft until the forward type impinges upon the cross member 17, in the manner described, thereby sliding the member 18 upon the head bar 19 of the galley mechanism to the extent of the setwise width of each character 16 thereafter inserted by action of the plunger 15.
Upon the side of the member 18 is a lug 30, which has a contacting abutting surface adapted to impinge upon a corresponding arm 33 that is pinned to the rock shaft 3a mounted at one end upon the bracket 34- and at the other upon the bracket 34, and having upon the opposite end, supported by said bracket 34, another short arm which is adapted to impinge upon the top of a vertical rod 36, which has one bearing in said bracket 3% and the other in the bracket 37 upon the frame 1 of the type casting machine. Upon the under side of the frame to which is thus attached the bracket 87 of the rod 36, suitably mounted in brackets provided thereunder, is the trip actuating rock shaft 23 to one end of which is attached the short hammer-head lever 21, so positioned that the top surface is immediately under and acts to support the rod 36. At the opposite end of the shaft 23 is the trip lever engaging arm 20, and it will be seen by reference to the drawings that when arm 20 is carried into position to engage the trip lever 24, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, the arm 21 lifts the rod 36 so as to carry the arm 33 into the position shown in Fig. 5, which forces the slide 18 back into its initial position. WVhen, however, the slide 18 is carried from its normal position of rest, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the lug 30 on said slide is carried into contact with the arm 33 as shown in the said figures, causing the rock shaft 34 to throw the lever 35 against the vertical rod 36 which in turn impinges upon the surface of the hammer-head lever 21 of the rock shaft 23 throwing the trip engaging lever 20 into the dotted position shown in Fig. 2, thereby releasing the trip, which will thereupon connect the justifier cam 10 with the driving shaft, with the result that the line of sorts which have thus operated the trip mechanism will be pushed into the galley as in the machine of our said patents and immediately the type casting machine will begin feeding a new line of the same character into the galley, and will continue so to operate until the stop member 25 has been withdrawn from the trip belllever 6 to prevent a new selector from being fed into the index head.
Having described our invention, what We claim is Q 1. In a record controlled type casting and line composing machine, record feeding actuating mechanism for rendering inoperative said feeding mechanism While said cast-' ing mechanism continues to operate, comrisin a lock or sto mechanism.
2. In a record controlled type casting and line composing machine, a record feeding actuating mechanism, means for rendering inoperative said feeding mechanism while said casting mechanism continuously operbly disconnecting said record feeding actu} ating mechanism from said driving means, comprising a lock or stop device.
4:. In a record controlled type casting and composing machine, a record feeding actuat ing mechanism operated by a driving shaft and a cam on said shaft adapted to operate line pushing mechanism, means for actuating said cam comprising a line of type being composed therein; operably disconnecting said record feeding actuating mechanism from said driving means, comprising a lock or stop device; and means for operably connecting said feed actuating mechanism with said driving means, said connecting means cooperating with a line of type for setting in operation said line pushing cam.
5. In a record controlled type casting and composing machine, a record feeding actuating mechanism operated by a driving shaft and a cam on said shaft adapted to operate line pushing mechanism, means for connecting the driving shaft with said cam comprising a line of type being composed therein; means for operably disconnecting said record feeding actuating mechanism from said driving means, comprising a manually controlled lock or stop device; and automatic means for operating said driving shaft and cam connecting means, said connecting means cooperating with a line of type for setting in operation said line pushing cam.
