RECORDING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patentd Fbo 11, 1913 Application led September 24,'1908- Serial No. 454,554.
To all wkomz't may concern:
Be it known that- I, CLYDE E. VV'. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Orange, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Re lcording Mechanisms, of which the followand cents-while the other indicates numbers,
as fully set forth hereinafter andas illustrated in the vac cornp'anying drawing, in which#- l Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of suliicient of an adding machine of well-known construction to illustrate my invention; Fig. 2 is a rear view; Fig. 3 a section of an adjust-able stop. Fig'. Ziis a'plan showing some ofthe principal parts below the' carf riage; Fig. 5 is a detached enlarged view of part of the devices for reciprocating the carriage and means for throwing said devices out of action; Fig. 6 is a detached view; and Fig. 7 a detached sectional .view `of detalls o1" the devices.
The frame A is suitably constructed to support a laterally sliding carriage B,and
the other parts ofthe apparatus includinga series of type carriers K, which support sliding type 490a series of hammers L, a working shaft C, from which all the Working parte of the mechanism areactuated, and`a drivin shaft D to which is connected an operating -handle l, when the machine is to be Worked by hand. The carriagev supports a cylindrical platen M', and accumulator Wheels Z are at the front cf the machine. The general arrangement and operation of these parte as" shown is similar to those in Letters PatentNo. 763,692, granted WV. H. Pike, Jr., June 28, 1904, and the machine herein described is more particularly an improvement upon that shown and described in an applicationof said VJ. H. "Pike, Jr., filed January 29, 1907, No. 354,7 7 9.
To a late 4 on the working shaft is connected t e rear end of the link 3 which is connected at the'front end to an arm 2 on the shaft D. The platen M is rotatable and supported .on the carriage B by a shaft 58, on vwhich 1s a ratchet wheel 23 engaged by the end of a pawl 22 pivoted to an arm'Ql on a shaft E, rocking in bearings on the can rlage, a spring 50 carrying the pawl toward the ratchet wheel, and a spring 17 connected with a fixed stud 70 and to an arm 12 on the shaft E swings the arm 12 when released forward and the arm 21 and pawl backward. The shaft E slides through the hub of the arm 12, but is splined so that the arm must rock with the shaft, said arm passing through a slot in the frame so as to swing,
but Wit-hout lateral displacement.
The lower end of the arm 12 carries a stud .30', and. an arm 15 en toe working shaft C may be brought against this stud tothereby positively rock the shaftfE, to turn the platen, with the carriage in any position. Normally this may occur .at each movement of the working shaft to thereby move the.
platen one step and feed one step-the sheet which lies on' the platen, as usual in record. ers. The platen can also be turned by hand byy a hand-wheel 51. Provision is made however whereby to prevent turning of the platen on the rocking -of the shaft C, so that items may be printed in line with each other. For instance a stud .62 supports one end of a reciprocating slotted blade 25, the
other end of which, when the blade is moved to the left., Fig. 2, is brought o posite the front edge of the arm 1 2,` when th rearward and which arm isethus prevented from swinging forward so that it will not be in a position to be struck and moved back by the arm 15.
To shift the carriage and the' sheet thereon to record items in line in different columns, devices are connected with the working shaft, and with a control key or lover, where-- by on each rocking of the shaft, and just before a printing, the carriage may he shifted. As shown the frame supports a slide F, which has slots y, receiving screw studs 29 extending into the frame, and a spring 28 connected with the slide. and with the frame tends to carry the slide to the right (Fig. 2) until a stop 32 (which may be adjusted in one of the slots) contacts with the ad jacent stud 29. A
e latter is Y An adjustable and separabley connection is suitably provided between the carriage and -lever; in the other by the spring `stud '7 tney he adjusted on the slide in rethe slide il?. Thus on the carriage is s catch Gr consisting of a hule on e rock-shaft 8, with e, projecting Wing l adapted to engage notches at, in an edge of the slide, e spring 53 connected with :in arm on the shaft 8 tending to turn theletter to hold the cetch in engagement with the slide. in erm lever l9 et the end of the shaft 8 serves es ineens of 'lifting the catch .hy so that the carriage may loe moved to s position lor its ceteh to engage either notch lvi'eens ere provided whereby the slide ll he operatively connected with or disconnected from the Workin@n shaft. Thus s lever rocks upon a, fixed e end` beersJ with en edge of its long erin upon e roller stud 7 on the slide, so that the lever` rocks on the stud 'e reciprocatinn" .motion is imported' to the slide in one direction loytie 1e spect to the lever lil to vary the throw. "lo the end of the short arm of the lever l-l is pivoted, so as to rock loosely, e connecting lever or blsde 5, the lor/er of which has e, notch lo, adapted to receive pin '75 on Yan erin 16 projecting from the shit C, and
when the lever 5 in the position-shown; in lFig. l, the rocking' of the shatt- C in direction of its arrow will recigrocete the slide. here such Vreci'procationfis required the lever 5 is rocked to carry its lower notched end forward to engage the pin 75, .Yhen the rocking oiY the Working shaft will shift the position of the carriage. 'lhe adjustment of the devices connecting the Werke ing shaft and the carriage reciprocating ineens .may be effected from eny suitable control device, es e key or lever. As shown thereis e control lever J on a shaft 56, rockin@- in the freine of the machine, and to the lower end of this lever is pivoted, yby e slip connection, s. link 13, and the bent rear end 13LL of this link hears against the forward fece of the upper end ci' the lever 5, and also has :i side lug i8 hearing' on s pin 19, on one erm of the horizontal hell,A crank lever pivoted to the frame, 'the other nrn; of seid hell-crunk lever being connected with the blade 'When me up- ;oer end ol' the control levcrJ :is dra-Avn forward the nlink 13 is pushed hack, rocks the hellerank 45, and shifts the latter to slide thelolede 25 to the left, lli. 2 in front of the erin l2, and prevents the arm from swinging forward and rocking` the shaft l und the vertical feeding ot the sheet, as hefore described, and :it the some time the rear end of the link pushes heck the upper end of the lever 5, so that its lower end swings forward into operative connection with the working' shaft C. rl`he parts muy he rctained in this relation by a hooked catch 2G which when the upper end of the lever J 'uscdmnuiy be employed.
fr innesti is pulled forward engages e pin on the lever and is so held by s spring 156. 0n releasing the catch of the control lever and pushing hack its upper end the link is drawn forward; the -lever 5 swings out of engage ment With the working' shaft under the in lliuence of a. spring' 20; the pin 18 on the link is removed from the pin 19, and spring 27 restores the blade 25 to its normal position.
rlhe parts in the position last described effect no shifting of the carriage, While the sheet is fed vertically one step at each operation" of the Working shaft and after printing each item, so that the items are printed in column. 'When however it is desired to print two items horizontally in line with euch other, the control lever J ispulled forward, when the vertical feeding olv the paper Will be arrested, and the com lever will be put intov connection With the Working shaft. Ass result, et the next anticloclrvvise swing of the com lever H, the slide F and carriage will oe carried to the left, Fig. 2, and as the said cam lever has .s tace Z, of en outline to cause a dwell at the end of the movement, the carriage is held immovable long enough for the imprint to he Les the com lever rocks back the carriage also slides back under the action of the spring 28, and the. catch 2G is tripped automatically by means ollaJ suitable connection with any coacting part of the machine, when the cain lever will he' disconnected from the Working shaft end {LOO a. second imprint con he made in line Withthe first, and thereafter the devices for feeding the sheet vertically Will resume operotions. Thus it is seen that after setting the control device the apparatus is-operuted to print an item in the column at the left, und then whenlthe control device is released an other may he printed in line with that last printed, instead ol' helowiit, and thereafter the parts will assume their normal relations.
The printin' of items in line with each other is generally required in listing' Where the first column, or item in line indicates s given number of articles, -While the second tem ii'ulicates value. Ot course in such case the first item should not divide the gures, us i Ruil, toindicate cents, and it is there loro necessary to cut out of action the two rigtfhend type carriers,4 und invso-me ceses also the next which carries n period dividing' cent indicutions'from dollars. rl"his resuit may hc eliected in dillercnt Ways, as :my suitable menus for throwing out of action the parte 'hat result in nrintingfrom the units, tous und decimal point types-it As shown hooked catches 37 are pivol'cd so that they may engage studs 39 on the hunnners that are to be held out of action, and these catches are Connected with means, preferably the the lower end by a sping the arm 34. on the shaft 55. @n the reverse parted to notam 1 control lever d', hy which they can be swung to engage the studs 39 wherever the other are set to print numbers instead of in dicating values. TFlins the shaft 56 has an arm B4. which is connected by a link 'with an ann on a shatti carrying the catches 3?, so that wlrenthe control device J is in the position shown infFig. l (when the iirst column or number item is printed) the hammers which operate on the cents type will not be free to act, but when the parts are in position to print the values in 'the secondv column, the hammers coasting with the catches will be operative.
One means of automatically shitingthe catch 26 is shown. There is an arm 60 on the shaft C, which, as the latter assumes its normal position, strikes a dog 6i on a lever G2 connected to the catch by a link 63. The dog is held normally in. the-position shown in F ig. l., by a spring 6e, and will not yield as the arm ris-ss passes from it so the lever 62 is swung inthe direction of its arrow, and the catch releases the control lever J, which is then swungto the lett at f ccnnectedlto .movement of the shaft the' dog 6l will swingdown l no mov ever 62 or catch 26.
The
,car
catches 5'? aired to hold the .hammers out of action. gresterscope oi? adjustment ci thear ringe is secured by mounting. the catch Gr to slide on the 8, and securing it in any position by a set-screw 68. r as shownin Fig. 3 a sliding stop 79 he applied to the slide F to slide thereon, a set screw T2 holding it in adjusted position and in this stop is a notch s to receive thewing it). The amount ofi' shift is controlled by setting the stop in diilerent positions to limit' the extent of return movement, of the slide and carriage, and the latter ma" beset in different positions in respect, to the slide. By shitting the slide wholly to the left, F 2, an.l securing it by `means of the locking stop 32, it is converted into staL tionery tabnlsting bar.
