The said coal sifter is constructed of a rectangular box, `A, which by means of a` being slidor moved endwise and drawn out ateach end of the box; its edges, a, a, being made to slide in grooves, b, ZJ,

At one end of the upper chamber, I make a rectangular opening which I provide with sliding door, F, which door is made to extend down to and not below the top of the wire frame and it is so adapted (by means of tongues and grooves) to the box as to'be capable of being raised upward when not covered by the sliding top. The other end of the box is provided with a similar sliding door, G, which is intended to cover an opening made through the end of the ash receiving chamber, D. This door however extends up to the top of the box and so as to allow the said door to be freely slid or moved over it. i

Each door is provided with a lid, (Z, against the underside of which the second finger of a persons hand may while the thumb rests on the top of the box and during the act of raising the door upward.

The bottom of the box is provided with a rocker, I, placed in its middle and made to extend in a longitudinal direction; it also has another rocker K, which extends across. the rocker, I, at right angles or transversely of the box, the same being to enable a person to rock the box in a transverse direction as well as in a longitudinal one. The lower edges of these rockers are in one plane for the purpose of enabling the box to maintain its horizontal position `when placed on a ioor.

When the box is uncovered, we pour coal ashes or any material to be sifted into the chamber,` C. Next, by tipping the box ina pro-per manner the contents of such chamber may be easily discharged therefrom, the upper chamber of the box remaining entirely covered during the operation of discharging the contents of either of the said chambers.

From the above it will be seen that my `method of applying the box, the lid, and the ters Patent, is-
